My first Powerbook G4 had a 2 hour battery pack. Knowing I might want to use it for longer than 2 hours in a stretch, I did the craziest thing: I bought 2 more battery packs. It solved all power problems using that Apple product for life of device.

Give this 20 years of evolution and it may eventually have no external battery pack and run for 18 hours. I'm glad Apple didn't give up on laptops when that old G4 could only run for 2 hours. It would be a sad world in 2024 without MacBooks.

"Think different"
Your laptop does far more with greater convenience and ergonomics than a ScubaVisionProMax.. I don't have to move my hands around in the air like a sign language interpreter to do file management, or type a document. I can lay back and let my hands do what they do best and is far better as an I/O method for the UX paradigm we continue to follow of the desktop with a bitmap screen.

Now, if they suddenly found away to move a cursor with your eyes....which is actually already feasible for Locked In Syndrome or paraplegics....then I would be impressed and say this thing has a future.

I still type on a keyboard on my MacBook Pro 14", which is the iterative grandchild of the PowerBook G4. The overall design and I/O method hasn't changed at all. All that has changed are the aesthetic properties of the chassis and additions of other internal components. But a laptop is still a laptop.

10 years from now, the Vision Pro is still a head accessory. They're not suddenly gonna change the VisionPro to be worn on your crotch.

Using an environment is probably key to getting that extra half hour; when someone is fully immersed the system can turn off the external cameras which would otherwise drain a lot of power.

I wonder what its like to use with a mac - as in how many monitors could it mimic. I use 5 at home, one is a 27" Thunderbolt Display and I'll have to replace it with an apple monitor at some point - wonder if I could use something like this instead of any monitors....
Single virtual Mac display. There isn’t enough bandwidth to push multiple 4K screens over WiFi. It’s basically AirPlay.

Plugging in is fine, but will probably be looking for a good third party battery with a belt clip or runners pack.

...And I can tell you that 90% of smartphone customers don't wanna sit on their couch and move their hands around in the air when they could lay on their side or lay back on the couch and use their hands for a far more convenient and ergonomic experience.
Then they will be happy to know that for a lot of things you can operate VP sitting with your hands by your side, no waving required. People really should check to see if some of the things they are complaining about actually require complaining about.

PS. Constantly looking down at your phone is ergonomically bad.

That's innovation for you....2.5 hours is amazing....hold on....let me get out my 18 hour battery life on my laptop....or the 24 hour battery life on the iPhone Pro Max or my AppleTV which plugs into my 75" TV, or a 24"-36" dual monitor setup for my Mac mini or iMac.

Again, how does this replace a device? I am only seeing ANOTHER device to add....it's not portable....it has a laughable battery life with a battery that is bulky and HARDWIRED to the machine.....and has only a niche functionality that at the end of the day a vast majority have no need for.

And before you retort, what are the combined sales of PSVR/PSVR2, Meta's Quest, and other VR scuba masks in the space? And then look at iPhone sales per year and ask if the ScubaVision Pro Max replaces any functionality. Even if you look forward at an iterative evolution over time, you get sunglasses....

To be fair the first iPhone had pretty horrendous battery life. It wasn't until the iPhone 4 were things were acceptable. Still, I agree with you. 2.5-hour battery life ONLY with video playback (the most efficient thing you can do)? Pretty bad.

Really curious how long people expect to wear this thing - I feel like the battery’s about the max I’d want a headset on my face, personally.

And yes, most people would like better battery life. Find someone to give us better batteries or accept that there’s only so much tech companies can do.
I agree. I can't imagine wanting something like this on my head for hours on end.

Agree.

I have an Oculus Quest and a PSVR2. I don't think I've ever worn them longer than 45 mins without a break. Granted - that's for gaming and generally that lends itself to wanting to take a break, but I can't imagine wanting to spend more than a couple of hours continuously in VR.

The counterpoint is watching movies on a big screen when I'm not a home. I love the idea of being able to fly long-haul with this and escape the reality of my coach seat. (I sort of do that now with noise canceling headphones, relaxing music and an eye mask.) Being able to shut out the world on a flight could be amazing but with just 2.5hours of battery life, that's not going to work.

Obviously, from this same extreme pessimism in every thread about Vpro, THIS is not a product for you. We get it. Thank you for confirming how you see no possible use for it. If we all happen to be you too, we feel exactly the same. Else, some of us- who are not you- may feel differently about the potential of the "ScubaVisionProMax." I for one look forward to trying one in person vs. passing judgement on mostly vapor and seeing for myself. That may lead me to a view somewhat similar to your own or it may lead me somewhere else. To be determined... soon.

A bunch of managers with no actual user experience probably signed off it. They demo it for the 5 minutes they have in the day, get wowed and sign off.

That’s how the heavy AirPods Max got signed off.

These are a stepping stone to something greater, Tim just wants return on investment faster at the possible risk of image tarnishing. In typical COO, he’ll just throw it on a backlog and deal with it when it happens while he continues on making things cheaper and charging the same price or higher for a lesser quality product.

I presume that’s why I get about the same days worth of battery as I did from the original iPhone.

Apple is about to tell us that fanny packs are back in style to carry these things around.

The doom prophets have always declared new Apple products and innovations failures based on their egos and ignorance. So, nay sayer, what’s your track record for prediction? Here’s a thought. How about you wait until you know the facts before rendering judgement?

I swear some people just join this site to be snarky and critical. That’s a weird way to live.

I guess the question is whether you'd want anything like this instead of monitors in the long run, rather than in addition to.

I could see using this for specific things, but having to wear it every day whenever I want to use the computer just sounds tedious.

I don't think anyone would be using AVP in that manner, even if it had an all day battery.

I agree. I can't imagine wanting something like this on my head for hours on end.

Seems as if a lot of the faithful imagine wearing one all day.

If you want a real red flag, it’s right in front of you (rhetorical you.) How many Apple executives have you seen wearing one? Answer: NONE.

If Apple was sure this was going to be a hit, they’d show someone (Tim Cook) wearing one. But we haven’t seen Tim or anyone on Apple’s executive team wearing one. They won’t wear it so why do they think anyone else will?
