They missed a trick. They should have called it the iEye and marketed it to sailors as their new Vaaaarrrrrrrr headset.

I cannot think of a single use that would justify me spending this sort of money for a device like this. For niche uses such as piloting drones into hostile spaces or perhaps enhancing operations for surgeons but for general business nah. We have rather more fundamental stuff to fix first. As to personal entertainment. I play games (sadly the mac isn't a great platform for that so its further limited) and I'm not prepared to spend that sort of money for an enhanced experience. Likewise movies. Most TV sucks and I barely watch it any more. For the most part I see VR as a solution looking for problems. This comment isn't limited to Apple but all consumer based VR solutions.

I also ought to say that I think as far as the implementation goes its very nice but for me it has no use.

re: the birthday image:
So, the concept is that we can wear an AR headset and miss out on the actual event so that we can re-live it later virtually?
You've got to figure this tech is going to come to phones in future generations. Nobody wants to wear this thing at any type of event that you'd want to relive.

that example of a birthday cake just sucks ...
I think this feature will be useful for creating learning videos or remote teaching/troubleshooting and such ...
Not for parents and grandparents.

The photos are still 2D but with a 3D effect. For remote reaching and training AR will be the way to go for edu and training.

This is stupid and creepy, imagine people walking around with their Apple goggles and taking pics and vids limited to 2 hour battery-life. Whats more realistic that a future iPhone will get the capability to take spatial pics and vids.

By the way, did anyone noticed that the headband in the picture is different?

"It is not clear if Apple will face some of the same issues with Vision Pro, but it at least makes it clear when a video is being recorded thanks to the unique external display. It's also not as lightweight and wearable as Google Glass, so it is unlikely many people will be wearing the Vision Pro out in public."

Uh excuse me, I'll only be seen in public while wearing a Vision Pro, you filthy casual.

It’s “dystopian” and yes we are that far away. Where in Apple’s presentation yesterday did you see a use case that feels dystopian to you? Are they spying on you and injecting mind control chemicals into your sweat glands with it or something?
The OP referred to "dystopian", not "authoritarian". Dystopian is typically distressing, frightening, or otherwise undesirable. This certainly does not require injection of chemicals. I agree with the OP that a future where we are increasingly experiencing life virtually at the expense of "real" life is dystopian. And no, we're not far away.

Would like to see what the actual prototype looks like as these promo images and video are just mockups / CGI.

They never showed an actual physical unit at WWDC or have anyone wearing one "on-stage"
Press had access to look not touch. A few media were given opportunities to try out. One reason for scarcity is that the software is probably not finished and debugged.

I know right? I can think of dozens of better creative use cases to demo and excite people. Non of which would include a lonely dude sitting on his couch watching videos we can only hope are his...

I suspect that's being shown because the Vision was being shown. I wouldn't be surprised if this feature shows up in iPhone very shortly.
Apple has to be very careful to avoid the elephant, which is that no one actually wants to wear the thing. People will wear it to get the experience it allows, but that's in spite of the headset itself, not because of it. No one actually wants to wear the headset...you "have to". Apple knows this and has to be careful to avoid talking about it. So yeah, they have to show someone talking 3D images and video with the headset, as if anyone would want to. But the real thing will come with iPhone being able to take 3D images and video, which can later be viewed with the headset.

I had thankfully forgotten about that until now 🌚

I still haven’t found out if this thing can make regular phone calls and if it has maps for driving. Imagine no more LA traffic jams, instead you’re slowly driving a Range Rover up the side of Mount Everest, with augmented stop signs and red lights that keep you from crashing into the car in front of you.
Will you be allowed to drive a car with this thing on? I don’t know about other states or countries, but in my state we have distracted driving laws. The first time a person meets a cop with this on their head, at least where I live, they are getting pulled over.

Do you think that the usage of bulky camcorders by parents in the 80s and 90s could have been subject to similar scrutiny? I believe that cultural norms will emerge to either discourage such behavior or to normalize it.
oh wow so true - I forgot about my parents clunky video recorders. "Capturing the moment" vs living the moment is something every generation has had to be cautious of.

The supposedly immersive photo and video capabilities of these goggles are the thing that turns me off the most. At least with an iPhone you can hold them so they’re not the elephant in the room of what you’re doing in taking photos or videos. Maybe they will be super popular for content creators, studios and the like, but I was glad to get through the days of carrying a 10 lb. camcorder to film my kids when they were young, and wouldn’t recommend to anyone to get a device like this if they think it will be better for filming their family / friends.

I can certainly see Apple or 3rd party hardware companies take the tech developed for the twin-camera spatial 3D photos and implement it on other devices, like with a separate camera unit that would attach to an iPhone.

a parent wearing the headset and taking photos/video of 2 children and the mother ... not the best scenario to show off.

Taking stereoscopic video and rewatching it in VR is pretty awesome. I have I Insta360 EVO that we take on vacation and other special occasions. It's a bit of a process using multiple devices but having this built into the headset should really streamline the ability to record and then playback well.. memories.

Granted it's a bit weird to record video this way. I hope that they do a lot of good work for stabilizing the video because your head is not the best of tripods.

It looks like an amazing device.

That being said, I feel it's like the original iPhone or features like "retina display", where you don't know you need it until you have it. And once you have it, you cannot go back.

Seems to be the way of phones and now headsets altogether, the amount of people the film live gigs and concerts is unbelievable. So engrossed in capturing the moment humanity forgets to live the moment entirely!!

Totally agree. Until the headset is something that you'd wear, say, on the beach, or at a football game, we need another way to record this kind of media. The headset looks great for consuming personal 3d media but not creating it. I'm glad it can but surely it won't be the only device with that capability.

If you can take videos and photos on your iPhone and relive them in 3d in the headset? Now you're talking about something amazing.

Taking family pictures with the vision pro seems like an ignorantly basic use for what is actually a really cool technology--- having your own personal 3D camera. Maybe Apple is hoping that 3rd party developers create great use cases for 3D capture technology, rather than developing something in-house. I could see this leading to the creation of the next big social media company, or some UGC platform where people can create and share their own 3D assets in really fun ways.

Apple has walled off developers during the creation of this platform and has only ported over their existing 2D app ecosystem, so nobody has even taken a stab at creating good use cases for the 3D cameras. The sky is the limit for what people can do with their own 3D cameras now that app developers can finally come on and build products.
