So it's basically a modern viewmaster, that can create the content as well. I mean it's kinda cool? But a bit gimmicky in their choice of use cases.

If they are pitching it as the 'pro', im surprised the showed so many casual applications. This might have been more compelling if it was used to take commercial 3d photos, video walkthroughs inside a house under construction or product demonstrations etc.

All in all, if it can used to make its own decent 3d/stereo content, interesting to see where that goes.

So many people already have a (smartphone) camera/display between them and reality. It’s only a small step further to free the hands in that moment by wearing smart glasses. I’m sure that future iterations on that product will be increasingly less obtrusive.

Eventually it won’t be more than a fancy glass with a slightly thicker frame, compared to corrective glasses.

By then it will be generally accepted by the majority and people will accept it for the advantage of being able to re-live such moments in close-to-reality quality over and over again (or even participate in real-time, if they can not attend the event in person for one reason or another).
Small step further? Man you’d
There's going to be two worlds on the same planet and these worlds will be diverging.

One world is where people use technology in a seamless way to enable our abundance and we exit the slave matrix money system and develop our natural abilities far beyond any technology - like in the book "the celestine prophesy". We will use AI to do all the things no human wants to do.

The other world is where we reach abundance by merging with machines, the transhumanist dystopia / utopia, where lonely people live in small pods and VR feeds directly into the brain make it seem less lonely. Injecting drugs - I think most of the people going there are part of the 50 - 70% of the western world _already_ consuming psychopharmaceuticals.. they're already doing it. AI will be telling us what to do.

Apple is unfortunately going for the second option, so they won't be part of my world if they keep going there.

I was fascinated with this VR ad because it's an ad, and it should be trying to sell me on this device. Instead I felt sad for all these lonely people living in their pods and watching movies alone with popcorn and their super HD technology.

No hugs, touch, or human warmth.
you make a really valid point. This was the first Apple ad I can remember where the vast majority of it revolves around the person being alone. All other products had people coming together doing things capturing moments and being part of the world. This one was dark and depressing. It’s the first Apple launch I’ve seen that I could clearly see zero Steve Jobs DNA in. I don’t think Steve would have liked the idea of this thing.

With the right software you should be able to just walk through a house for sale to create the 3D model. In the end it will tell you to go back to places that need more info. Should take minutes.

Depending on how easy it is to share these 3D video files with others to view on their own Vision Pros, expect various bad actors like Terrorist organisations or Cartels creating 3D tutorials on legally questionable subjects, or straight out acts of violence against humans filmed in this manner then sold online through websites that typically host Gore content. Expect acts of Child Exploitation material to be filmed using this headset and then sold within private networks.

Depending on the duration and depth in which these clips can be filmed and shared, expect them to be the new token media format that supersedes all others like traditional HD video & audio. I expect that Apple is aware of this and may take yet unknown measures to make the distribution and usage of these files to hold some limitations. For the sake of personal freedom I hope not, but at some point of digital fidelity, you are no longer sharing a video but an experience, that can be lived as if you were present.

I expect the 2024 or 2025 iPhones to have a 3D Camera that allows you to film 3D content optimised for the Vision Pro. And at some point YouTube optimising itself for the sharing and distribution of these 3D videos.

The OP referred to "dystopian", not "authoritarian". Dystopian is typically distressing, frightening, or otherwise undesirable. This certainly does not require injection of chemicals. I agree with the OP that a future where we are increasingly experiencing life virtually at the expense of "real" life is dystopian. And no, we're not far away.
This is pretty short-sighted and cynical. I hope you find peace at some point.

Actually I find it one of the best approaches yet to AR/VR and am looking forward to a future iteration that’s more affordable. I’m confident that you’ll suddenly find it interesting when your eyesight deteriorates with age and you can then have _really_ huge screens around you that’d be completely impractical as physical devices. That is, if you don’t withdraw from IT when growing older …
my eyesight is already bad and i think this thing is so goofy lol. huge fake screens and simulated immersion doesn’t sound appealing, that’s not something everyone wants.

talking about this as if it’s something that’s going to break through the mainstream when the price drops feels out of touch to me. i don’t see this thing having the same popularity arc as the ipad. originally people didn’t get what the ipad was for but it eventually became a huge hit because it has a lot of practical uses. what practical use does this have that justifies having to wear a big goofy headset that makes you look silly? i think this thing will be more like the watch, i think it’ll gain a more niche appeal among people who have a use for it, but not something that most people will feel drawn to.

I‘m with you that the futuristic look only partially distracts from the bulkiness. However, I viewed it more from the inside. And there it allows you to have multiple displays of virtually unlimited size.

I could see a zoom function to help elderly and/or people with poor eyesight to master their daily lives better. Gamers might embrace it to get sucked into their games more than it would be possible with traditional monitors. Professionals may use it for various workflows. No more need to have a humongous slab of glass (a.k.a. TV) dominating your living room, no more fighting for the remote. Full privacy in public and especially during commuting on public transportation.

No one expects this to be worn in public just yet, except maybe by the hardest of hardcore tech nerds.

But when hardware advances and in a couple of years from now allows to put that hardware in a very unobtrusive glasses frame, Apple can have a refined software readily available to enter the true mass market. In the (very) long run it might even become available as contact lenses, even though that may still sound like ScienceFiction.

But one could say the same about a lot of mainstream products today (like the Apple Watch or any given smartphone or tablet), which would have been considered pure Science Fiction only a few decades ago.

That’s easy to complain about now when almost zero people on the planet have ever used/seen one of these. Once it’s a more commonplace type of device, which is going to be a few years, nobody will notice.

It’s “dystopian” and yes we are that far away. Where in Apple’s presentation yesterday did you see a use case that feels dystopian to you? Are they spying on you and injecting mind control chemicals into your sweat glands with it or something?
If this takes off, pull the plug on humanity

With all the criticism on how creepy this feels: I wonder if it will be possible to place the headset on the table or a rack, or even a tripod, and record the 3D videos this way...
This would be a great option. Looks like the "field of view" to record is somewhat constrained so may be difficult to know what you are recording without having the headset on. Perhaps an option to see the "field of view" from your iPhone could be the solution.

Or maybe from the outside display of the headset? Like a selfie-video...
