I was going to get my wife a S8 to upgrade from her S5 but this is the common theme I keep on hearing, it's not worth it.

It's bigger, brighter, faster, as long as you know what you are getting. I'm not sorry I upgraded to the 7, not at all. It is a great looking watch that I use everyday. It's just not going to be so revolutionary that it will blow you away. It so reminds me of selling home audio just out of high school. Changing knobs (I was alive to see the huge volume knob craze begin), changing locations, changing colors, adding/subtracting weight. And people would wait with baited breath for the new models to come out, and throw their money at us to own the new hotness. Even though there were often no changes in performance from one model to another. One vendor reversed the knob layout and people bought it. One went with all white fronts and people bought it. It was a shock to me. People that hadn't paid off the previous years equipment that had to have the new hotness, signing up for more credit to get it.

As a few have stated, that is why we are getting the Ultra. Clearly Apples plan to gravitate people towards the NEW, more expensive option.

You aren't wrong. I'd wonder how 'new' the ultra actually is. Like is it just an 8 with new skin and appendages? It doesn't matter as it seems to have features people could actually use, more battery, better GPS, etc. *shrug* Is it worth it? It's up to the purchaser.

Apple watch 8 is good upgrade for women...men should wait for the next gen when Apple will place a sensor for mens ego , cannot wait

Isn't that the Ultra? I saw a Jeep with factory installed 'things' hanging off it. Fender extensions and other stuff. To me, it looked like it was compensating for something. It looked like an outrageous toy that an 8 year-old would be playing with in the yard. But if it 'speaks' to the owner, Jeep will keep making them.

Like most have already stated, there is very little update in this from last year. I'd say the only decent updates in recent years were the AOD with Series 5, and the increase display size with Series 7.

But like with most things, we really don't need crazy changes year over year as the product category matures. Iterative updates and improvements are always good, but the big PR push every year will result in this kind of letdown.

I find it amusing that people complain about Apple being greedy while at the same time complaining about no compelling updates to products thus no reason to buy.

it's literally a series 7 with 1 new sensor plus crash detection
Which makes the ridiculous price I paid last year for S7 Titanium a bit easier to justify.

It's officially (and perpetually?) the lightest-ever Apple Watch with a sapphire crystal :)

I'm hoping for some GPS accuracy testing on the Ultra and 8 compared to previous watches. This is where I'm interested in seeing if there are any changes.
I agree. I really like a number of things about the Ultra:
- potentially better GPS accuracy
- the additional Action button which will make certain types of running workouts much easier to handle

Unfortunately, I cannot justify the cost of the Ultra right now. It is really expensive! Yikes! If they can bring the GPS features and the action button to the Series 9, that would be lovely.

I'll say again.. the least exciting product updates of anything Apple does, outside of maybe AppleTV.

I have an S5 and I am considering S8 in Midnight. I typically get the Nike Apple Watch but their bands don't match the Midnight color case at all, so I have yet to purchase.

I think the innovation in the Apple Watch is stifled by battery tech.

It has been said so many times on Macrumors; unless you HAVE to have the latest, year over year updates are not worth paying for. It's like replacing your car every year - objectively a waste of money.

For me:
iPhone, Watch - 3 years
iPad - 4 years
Macs - 5 years plus

Just my own guideline.

I also have S5 but I won’t bother: the upgrades since them are marginal at best. Just wait one year and see what they come up with. Hopefully they sell very little and realise they have to do a lot better if they want to convince people to upgrade.

It won't. Part of it is knowing what it is actually measuring. If it's measuring skin temperature, it's rather meaningless. It's an appendage, it's not measuring core temperature.
Enjoy walking around with your rectal thermometer dongle for your Apple Watch then lol, the reading it provides is more than sufficient for most uses. A core temperature reading is not necessary in a lot of instances.

Unless money is no object.
I would say watch falls in the 4 years bracket, if not 5. Upgrade definitely worth from 3 to 8 or from 4 if one cares about always on display. Not worth doing from 5 (three years ago).
