Enjoy walking around with your rectal thermometer dongle for your Apple Watch then lol, the reading it provides is more than sufficient for most uses. A core temperature reading is not necessary in a lot of instances.
Core temperature reading is the only reading that matters. Wrist temperature varies a lot for reasons that have little to do with a core temperature variation. Core temperature can easily and reliably be measured at forehead or hear, if they cared about this all they needed was a la IR sensor that the person can, if they feel like they might have high temperature, put near the forehead.

That’s quite literally untrue in every single sense saying that core temperature is the only temperature that matters. Someone who is putting on their watch and going about a regular day does not need that type of reading and neither do most people on a regular basis.

The Apple Watch needs attention aware, so that the Watch doesn’t dim after 15 secs when you’re looking at the display.

I don’t want the whole TrueDepth tech on the display, just the IR scanner

And these people definitely don’t need a wrist temperature reading that has no meaning whatsoever.

It does have meaning though, and is widely acceptable for its use, that’s why it exists.

If you are trying to say the only temperature that matters is core temperature, then that can also only mean rectal temperature is the only accurate option as forehead and ear temperatures are not as accurate as rectal. You can not say one is inferior to the other then suggest two inferior options to the most accurate if accuracy is what you are basing the entire argument on.

This is why I've stopped caring about the iPhone and the Mac and Apple Watch are the only Apple things I like anymore. They're the only two that seem to be getting actual upgrades and are fun to use.
Many actual buyers (hundreds of millions...) do not look for the world's best devices to be changed every year for the sake of entertaining a few tech watchers. Change is not per se good when one's tools are doing the job really well already. We like improvements, of course, and faster chips keep giving us that, but change of critical tools already working very well needs to be carefully done.

The Watch hasn’t seen any compelling update since the S4/S5 quite frankly. No dramatic improvement in battery life and/or case thinness; still reusing the same chip for the last few generations; still an extremely limited set of watch faces and no watch faces store, which is disappointing since the Watch is supposed to be the ultimate personal device; and the added sensors in the past few years (Ox, temperature for ovulation) aren’t particularly useful for health insights to the general population.

I’m hoping that the Watch Series X (10th anniversary) will have an iPhone X-like moment with a redesign of the UX and significant improvements to efficiency with a new SoC and maybe some blood pressure or even blood glucose (less likely) sensor.
IMO there is no need for annual compelling changes, but that is just my $0.02. However I did consider the AW4 to AW7 watch upgrade compelling, for me. And I consider the Ultra upgrade compelling (for me), even coming from the AW7.

Apple Watch measures battery life in HOURS… Also the aw ultra. That’s should be enough to look for another brand! Jesus… HOURS?! People actually are happy with charging a watch every day?

I was going to get my wife a S8 to upgrade from her S5 but this is the common theme I keep on hearing, it's not worth it.

I just had a battery replacement on my S5 - I feel no need at all to upgrade. There’s too little difference to a S8. I’ll probably go Ultra in a year or two, but my trusty replacement S5 feels just as snappy as ever. For me the most important new thing this year was roaming - and that will come to the S5 too.

Save the money and get the wife a new band instead, always a popular gift. :)

I have an S5 and I am considering S8 in Midnight. I typically get the Nike Apple Watch but their bands don't match the Midnight color case at all, so I have yet to purchase.
Look at the irl pics of the midnight color. It's a lot closer to black than the Apple pictures show. The black Nike band should match just fine.

Sure. I charge it for like a half an hour before I go to bed and again when I wake up. Of course prior to getting an Apple Watch I wasn’t wearing a watch. So I treat it like charging my phone. NBD.

AW sales prove that most real buyers disagree with you. And Ultra pre-orders likely further prove how far from reality your comments are.

And yes, many folks have no trouble charging a watch daily. Many of us have never chosen to wear a watch 24 hours a day, so having it charge for an hour or two is trivial. In my case the AW functions quite well (and automatically) as a night stand clock while it is charging.

While the gyroscope and accelerometer have both been upgraded, the focus is specifically on G force for the aforementioned Crash Detection. That means things like automatic workout detection are in line with the Series 7. When running, I found it took around three minutes of activity to turn on. It will then backfill that time and add it to your total, though I often lose around 10 or so seconds in there, which is more or less inline with Samsung’s workout detection.
Well that's disappointing to hear that they don't leverage the faster sampling sensors for any workout tracking. This is turning out more and more to be a complete bummer of an upgrade.

I have a S4 and love it still. I have held off due to including features that didn't speak to me. I had high hopes for S8 but doesn't seem that different from 7 from 6 from 5. So i will keep hanging with my S4 and wait for S9.

I’m fine with it. I brush 2x a day and shower. It’s enough to never run out.
Agree, I was sceptical about battery life coming from a Garmin Fenix that lasted for a week, but I made it a bigger deal than what it turned out to be once I bought my S5.

I use my Watch for sleep tracking, so I charge in the morning and before going to bed.

However, I would love at least a solid weekend of battery life, of course.

Exactly this. My wife & my AW5 battery is at 83% and with heavy use, I still have 35% charge EOD. If Apple does not wow me sans the Ultra, I may skip next year too and replace the battery. Not missing the additional.12” additional display with the 45mm.

Don´t buy the Apple Watch 8 if you are coming from AW 4 or later. You will be disappointed and you will be sad for a long time. Apple is just a regional company which is already on its way down. Apple = Nokia of the 2020s.

Enjoy the kool aide. I got tired of dragging the charging cable around on frequent weekend trips. With killer features (for me) being notifications, payments, music, and of course, GPS also available on Garmins, which now feature amoled screens, there was no reason to continue that drudgery.
