It literally doesn’t?It just doesn’t, it sounds like what happened is you made a user error.
if you purchase something online, the Apple Pay screen comes up *before* you have to double click the side button, already with all the pricing details there.
if you’re purchasing something in the store, you either need to hold it near the reader before or after you double click the button.
if you were in such a rush that you just jammed the phone into the reader while double clicking the button and staring at it all at the same time, sure it’ll speed through it.
but that’s on you.
also, if it really wasn’t letting people see their prices before they paid for something, don’t you think that would be like… A real big problem with tons and tons of complaints across the Internet about it?
because so far, this is the first I’ve ever heard about anyone not being able to verify their purchases before they make them.
Whether or not I was in a rush is irrelevant. It's simple. With Touch ID and password I have to take an affirmative action. With Face ID I don't. And as described above, if you are looking at your phone while you double click, then yes, it happens automatically. I know that's how Face ID is intended to work.

My point is still the same. Its a process that can lead to a payment going through before someone has reviewed it because it doesn't require an additional affirmative step.

I knew it, you made a mistake and want to blame Apple for it.
for the record, the exact same thing will happen and has happened with touch ID. If you on double click the home button and just… Hold your finger there, it’ll zoom through the checkout process.
if you want to be sure that everything came up right and you’re paying the right price just… Slow down.
also, again, there’s a third step you’reconveniently forgetting, which is that… You have to hold it right in front of the reader for it to register. If you scan your face when it’s not up to the reader, it won’t do anything. It’ll just say “hold near reader”. There’s that affirmative action you have to take.
if you want your purchase to go through, hold it near the reader. If you don’t, keep it away from the reader.
again if there really was an issue here, it would be widespread. Just like the people getting the car crash detection alerts when they’re on roller coasters and stuff like that, it’s all over the Internet.
this is not because it was a user error.
it’s OK to not like face ID but at least be honest about why.

Apple usually waits to do things that already exists to do it better.

I have both face id and an Android with ultrasonic fingerprint and face id is a god-send. Have a notification? Touch it and you are there, no extra step of scanning your finger.

Faster and never fails, unlock it with helmet on, etc, (can't do touch id with gloves)

Touch id is a step back in usability, both could be great, and two biometrics unlocks could be nice.

What advantages does Touch ID have over Face ID, other than when you go on a spy mission and wear a fake beard?

Honest question, as I sometimes wear glasses, head gear at times, sometimes doesn't shave for a couple of weeks, and yet have Face ID working essentially always. It is just so much more convenient and faster to use compared to Touch ID in my experience.
It's faster. Don't have to be looking at my phone to gain access. Same with Wallet, wouldn't have to look at my phone to auth. a transaction.

When FaceID works it’s great, but when it doesn’t it’s rediculously bad. Often it won’t work if part of my face is obscured, which is to be expected. However it’s the experience of getting into the device when it fails, really poor. it will try and try again and is really slow to provide an option to bypass. Even if Touch ID isn’t integrated there needs to be a quicker way to bypass Face ID when it hasn’t worked.

No, it's not.

You can literally tap on the words 'Face ID' (which appear when the TrueDepth camera/system is unable to get a visual) to bypass Face ID and go straight to the PIN pad.

stupid question but why is it taking Apple so long to implement this? I have it on my 300 EUR device from work and it is working great. It actually feels strangely satisfying to see the unlock animation on the screen :D
Is that 300 EUR device one from a Chinese company and can be fooled by a static image of your face though? That's why Apple hasn't released their version yet.

I know it wasn’t advertised as far as I know, but I noticed such a huge jump in Face ID’s speed coming from the 13 Pro Max to the 14 Pro Max that I honestly don’t even care if they bring Touch ID back or not and I never thought I would be saying that.

It’s literally so fast now I don’t even remember it’s there. It would be great if they added a “Bypass Lock Screen” option in the settings somewhere to make it feel even faster.
Agreed! I really wanted Touch ID back until the 14 Pro but it now feels so seamless in most circumstances that I don't miss it as much. I'd still like it for paying for things especially Underground train gates where having to look right at your phone on a crowded concourse is a pain.

They do this as it fuels the "Apple aren't the first to do it. But when they are they do it in an 'Apple way'" lines.

I am SO sick of reading MacRumors articles which talk about possible features coming not year but next year, in 2026, the late 2020s, etc...

I miss feeling excited for what is coming THIS year with hardware. And I miss Apple genuinely delighting us with their first-party app updates and significant, decent, relatively bug-free updates to their OSes.

It feels like we're just drip fed incremental updates with a promise/vague hope of more in future years, all while paying more and more for the privilege.

Apple, do better. I've used your products all my life and likely always will but I long for a return to some of the values of the Apple of old.
I don't even mind waiting some if it actually release then. But all they ever do is delay it every year.

Apple would never allow such a thing.

I mean imagine letting users select their biosecurity method. Very un-apple.
Precisely. It is not in Apple's DNA to say "Neither of these is definitively better than the other so we're gonna do both and let you figure out." Hell no. Face ID is definitively better, which is why it replaced Touch ID on the high end products FIVE YEARS AGO. That doesn't mean you can't invent a scenario where Touch ID isn't better. But it isn't overall better. And that sealed the deal. Long ago.
