I wonder what happens when you own more than 25 books? Is it gonna "page" the shelf as the iPhone home Screen?

How ridiculous, they couldn't have brought out an iPhone version of iBooks as well???

I just bought an iPhone 3GS and am stuck with Kindle for iPhone right now but it's lame compared to what the iBook app can do...

I sure hope they make it available to the iPhone as they'll get many more book sales with that...

isnt there a kindle app for iphone?

I'm in very much the same boat as yourself; and am unsure wether to get myself a US account or not.. What complications does having your iPhone tied to two accounts bring? Is it just having to type two passwords for updates? Or are there other hoops to jump through too?

It's easier than it used to be... on my iPhone anyway. Seems to switch between the two stores quite easily and just prompt me for the appropriate password when it needs it.

Weird thing is that I've contacted Apple in the past with iTunes store problems and they've listed all my accounts for me and included the US one that's under a totally different email address with a fake address. So they're obviously aware that people do this. Wouldn't be hard for them to cancel these accounts if they wanted to.

How feasible is it to create a 2nd iTunes account (a US one to go alongside my existing UK account) and have them both on the same Mac?

Along with wanting the iBooks app, I'd also like to grab a few TV shows from iTunes that are unavailable in the UK (and, therefore mean I have to grab them via Torrents). Curious whether this would allow the ABC app to run over here too?

Totally feasible. I've had two on one Mac for ages. I've downloaded TV shows, applications and music from both stores on one Mac.

No idea if the ABC app will work though. The Comixology app wouldn't show Marvel comics in the UK no matter which store I downloaded the app from.

Seriously - you want to read a novel on a screen the size of a postage stamp? That's simply a nonsense statement.

Seriously, this is your response to a perfectly valid point?

Frankly, with Kindle available on the iPhone, as well as on the Mac now, I can't believe that Apple hasn't launched iBooks as multi-platform across their very own platforms.

I can only suspect that this will happen soon. Otherwise, it would be kind of ridiculous on Apple's part to have Amazon beat them in this respect on Apple's own products.

So using a company like Myus.com to provide a US address will allow internationals to use the iBook app, is that right?

Cheers :) Off to create one now....

Nice...complimentary Winnie-the-Pooh... Well, I guess it's better than nothing...

I have a nine month old so it will get it's use. Plus my wife will finally stop being like "Where's that Winnie the Pooh book from the commercial!". Yeah, that'll be nice.

iBooks will probably come to the Mac (if it takes off), but as a standalone app.

Movies they could get away with, and Applications had no use outside of iTunes, but books demand a whole different set of considerations. I think it's very telling that they're calling this the "iBookstore" - it's going to get synced by iTunes, but I don't imagine that's how people will interact with it on their computers.

I don't think it will come to the iPhone. Page formatting.

His point was equally valid. Apple don't *do* inferior user experience. Which is exactly what iBooks on the iPhone/iPod touch would be. They'd rather have no experience than a **** one.

I read from my iPhone ebook apps all the time. Granted I might be better able to tolerate the size but I'm sure most people are fine for a couple chapters. Why on earth would any dual iPhone and iPad owners restrict themselves by purchasing from iBookstore rather than Kindle or Barnes & Noble? You're always going to have the phone with you, not so for the iPad. Unless Apple is planning to reject their iPad apps, in which case I look forward to the backlash.

At the very least they need to let iPad owners sync to the phone.

I think I just used the address of a hotel I stayed in whilst in New York.

But how did you get round the billing issue? iTunes requires some sort of credit card which will of course need to be matched with the address that you use.

Just buy some US Itunes vouchers

Look on ebay.

You don't have to have a credit card to open an account it works by redeeming vouchers. I have $180 on my account, getting ready for a book splurge :p Though trying to save some for when wired comes out as an app, that will save me money on buying it here in UK.

Is it asking for that to create the account? Hmmm... can't remember.

Only way I have to get credit on the account is buying US iTunes vouchers off eBay.

EDIT: Just googled and found this...

Not sure if it's still valid.

Okay that's great, thanks guys. :)

Yeah. I'll get the Kindle app. I will be able to read -- and sync -- on my iPad (if I get one), my iPhone, my Kindle, my MacBook and my work PC.

Jeez. Do I really need access to books on five platforms?

Edit: six platforms - forgot about...uh...what's that stuff called? Like thin sheets, bound by glue...folds...PAPER!

What can the Kindle App do that iBooks can't?

i no this may seem like a stupid ? but can u only access the ibook store through the app? will it be available within the itunes store thats on your desktop or macbook?

Yes, you still need to read books. The ones with printed text, that feature constructed sentences and carefully selected words. You need to read them a lot... You really need to experience the magic of capital letters and apostrophe. What they do is amazing!

Artificial constraints as exclusivity strategy

I agree. This is one of the examples of Apple enforcing an artificial constraint on a feature/software that reasonably could work across multiple devices, most likely with the hopes of making the iPad more appealing due to exclusive features.

However, this strategy really irks me because it seems myopic. Imagine the difference in volume of sales of iBooks would be if it was also released for iPhone. But I assume they felt this would risk reduced iPad sales. So, we'll see how long it takes them to "Let" us (now) lowly iPhone users have at it.
