This iPhone SE 4 sounds too good to be true. A cheap $500 iPhone that has pretty much all the features and performance of the current base iPhone 16, but at a much cheaper price?

There must be a catch!

Here are some other possible omissions in the 2025 iPhone SE:
  • MagSafe wireless charging

You're probably right about the other things, but I'd be surprised if Apple omitted MagSafe on the SE. MagSafe is a revenue source for Apple through selling MagSafe accessories (and MagSafe MFI licensing to third parties). Any savings they'd make by omitting MagSafe parts from the device would be peanuts compared to the average revenue they make from each device through selling accessories.

So there has clearly been enough of a market for Apple to offer small iPhone.

That assumes the SE's small size was a main selling point.

The iPhone SE was never a huge seller for Apple either, although still better than the minis, and whatever success it had can be attributed to factors beyond (and sometimes despite) its small size. The low price being a major one.

Other than the smaller size, what was the "catch" with the original iPhone SE?

The original iPhone SE started at $399 (around $530 in today's dollars) compared to starting prices of $649 (around $862 in today's dollars) for the iPhone 6S and $749 (around $994 in today's dollars) for the 6S Plus at the time. The SE and 6S models had same RAM, same chip, same 4G LTE, same Touch ID, single 12MP cameras, etc.

I don't care if people say 'mini' didn't sell very well. If they bring back mini, it will be SO much more than they ever did for iphone for past 4 years
You don’t care. Fine. Meanwhile, Apple doesn’t care what you think. You‘re still not getting a Mini. Just like I won’t get another Plus. Time to move on.

The completely different design and smaller screen size was a huge differentiator. Nobody was going to confuse the original iPhone SE for an iPhone 6s.

I have said this previously but it deserves repeating. The whole concept of the Apple SE phone is to make a cheaper iPhone based on the current processor and scavenging most other parts from all the iPhones that are still in production. The whole concept is to reduce costs by maximizing the use of EXISTING parts. A 6.1 display is the smallest iPhone display still in production so that’s what the new SE4 gets.

Smaller, thinner, touch ID - none of that is in the current iPhone production line so it’s not going to get into a new SE 4 model. Apple is not going to keep parts in production just for an SE iPhone.
Except the SE3 disproved like, all your points. New phone using parts no other iphone used at that point anymore.

I use my phone all day, so why would I want a 2007-sized phone? I’ve been debating if it’s finally time to make the jump to the max.
Why would i pay $1000+ for a phone i cannot use on the go, only two handed when i sit down on my couch or behind my desk. Why would i use my phone when i have a tablet on the couch and two big screens on my desk?

This big phone craze came from a certain type of people that do everything on their phone, except what it was meant for. Smart people always prefer the right tool for the right job.

The SE3 is mostly the guts of an iPhone 13 in an iPhone 8 chassis, while it looks like the iPhone SE4 is mostly the guts of an iPhone 16 in an iPhone 14 chassis

The screen, the body, speakers, the camera, touch ID were all not used by any other iphone anymore. They only changed the processor and upped the battery capacity.

Furthermore: This was ALWAYS the case. They recycled out of date items from DISCONTINUED models. First from the iPhone 5s, later from the iPhone 8.

They have never in their history made an iphone SE from parts in use with current models. Only the processor was new.

Your theory is simply incorrect.

This is why these rumors make no sense. Nobody would buy an iphone 14,15,16 if they can get basically the same for half the price.

Ok ... WE WANT THE MINI BACK! ... it is probably just 10 or 15% of us but that's more than some yearly improvements Apple report. We are holding our Mini12's and 13's in hope of something similar or just to have it longer.

Yes, I know all think this is not possible but ... worth the try! .... you won't believe how good it fits on your hand and pocket.

And when your mini is eventually obsolete, Apple believes you will turn around and buy a bigger iPhone anyways. There isn’t a mini substitute readily available from any major phone manufacturer. Heck, Apple will use it as an opportunity to sell you a watch too. Apple does not believe that lack of a mini will make you switch to another brand

The best chance (which is still unlikely) to have apple make a new mini is if Samsung make one and it was successful. But this has worked [yet] to encourage Apple to make a foldable phone

Many SE/mini users buy an iphone because of the size, not because of iOS. I for one endure the message and widget center mess just because there are no alternatives in android land. And I'm not the only one.

Without a small iphone option, i would just return to the smallest available option in android land.

I bought several. They sold a couple million, more than some Android models.

In addition, the marketing was abysmal. Nobody wants to have a “mini” phone, and carriers basically didn’t market it at all. Moreover, the SE2 just came out just six month before, and many who had been holding out for years with an SE1 or similar for a new compact iPhone had already jumped on the SE2.

One thing to note is that the 12 Mini came out during COVID. Millions of people who would have viewed the phone in a store were not allowed to leave their house.

YouTube influencers push the pro models and didn’t have many positive things to mention about the 12 Mini.

Carrier deals are likely the biggest marketing for the Pros (and the most profitable) so carriers neglected the Mini model.

Let me know what you find.

When I last checked Samsung & Google, except for folding phones they offered phones no smaller than iPhones with a 6.1” display. I’m in the US, so Chinese phones are not practical, unfortunately. I found a couple smaller android phones but they were from companies I never of before (been there, done that, got burned and learned my lesson)

Waiting to see the new SE. Looks like it will be a significant upgrade from the current generation.
