This is really getting to me. I love my iPhone 3g, but am very surprised that there are no Apps or "Mode" for the visually impaired.
My girlfriend is legally blind. She can still see enough to get around, but cell phones have always been a pain for her mostly when it comes to text messaging.
The iPhone has got a perfect screen for large print.
If the contacts list could be made with a larger font, and the Text messaging could be done horizontally with a larger keyboard and a larger print she would be the happiest girl in the world. I have noticed with e mail you can increase font size and that actually works well enough. But that is just a small part of the phone....
Seems so simple. I would pay for an app if there was one. (Larger Text Messaging.)
So why has Steve Jobs overlooked this and who can I write to?
I know we are not the only people in the world who are feeling overlooked.
TIA
Thankyou for bringing this up! I'm legally blind and have always been frustrated with mobile phones, with the exception of the blackberry where I can enlarge the entire font library as large as I want. Obviously, with bigger fonts the screen real-estate is somewhat limited, but if its the difference between being able to actually use the device or not, I'm more than happy to sacrifice the number of words I can view at once. I would certainly think that Apple would have a technical advantage with the larger screen on their phones to be able to market them at visually impaired people - I know of a number of others who would purchase an iPhone if they could be guaranteed an ability to enlarge fonts. It can't be that hard either, it would just mean a bit more 'pinching' and 'stretching' by the user. And yes, I'd pay for it too.
this is also the sort of feature that needs to be written into the OS of the phone and not into some App. That way, any app running on the phone can be enlarged accordingly. Obviously, things like games are limited, but any IM, Email, Calendar, Address, or Web stuff would be able to use it surely.
Apple have always actively supported accessibility options on their computers and I see no reason why they can't spread their wealth of experience in this area to their portable devices category.
Although Voice apps are good, there are times when I don't want to be heard reading out loud what I'm about to type
