Maybe I'm just not a finger-printy person but I find the fingerprint thing to be overblown. Does it show fingerprints more than silver? Yes it does, but so far I've only ever wiped mine off once but I do that to all my machines each week.

I personally really like the midnight color. I figured if Apple sees people want colors maybe someday I'll get a lime green or ocean blue air.

Buying a "Midnight" Macbook Air and returning it because it shows fingerprints is the equivalent of wanting to return a car under warranty because it has black paint and looks dirty all the time.

You can dress it up any way you like, but fundamentally its the same thing. Sure, Apple will gladly accept the return and it is within your "rights" but it is what it is. And there is a cost: environmentally and financially. Financially the cost gets passed back to consumers.

Here is the logic of people who take back a Midnight MacBook Air

Disgusted customer - “Hello is that the BMW garage I’d like to make a complaint please”
BMW man- “Yes squire , what seems to be the issue ? “
Disgruntled customer - “Yes I purchased a brand new M5 from you a week ago but its got problems“
BMW man - “what are the problems with your M5 ?”
Disgruntled customer -“ it’s got fingerprints on it“
BMW man- “sorry what?“
Disgruntled customer - “it’s got fingerprints all over it , I ordered the M5 in midnight blue and it’s a complete fingerprint magnet, especially near the door handles ! , this is a disgrace akin to apple launching the MacBook Air which also attracted fingerprints“
BMW man - “sir you do realise you need to use your hands to open the doors of your car?
Disgruntled customer- “ what? I’m not even using the car it’s just on my driveway to look at and brag about, just like the new MacBook Air and people upgrading to 24GB of RAM and opting for 2 TB of storage simply to open Facebook and use YouTube. I’ll be driving the car back to your showroom and I want a space grey or starlight coloured M5 waiting for me when I get there“

I had a midnight preorder that I cancelled in favor of starlight -- not because of fingerprints, really, but reports of midnight looking underwhelming + my desire to go for a lighter color influenced me.

Just saw both in the store for the first time -- starlight looks good, midnight looks great IMO. Fingerprint issue didn't seem that bad (although maybe my skin is dry).

Oh well though, not reordering again 😅

As I expected, the semi-sealed Midnight finish is actually more fingerprint prone the more you clean it. Especially if you use an alcohol based cleaner.

The real solution is to use a piece of raw bacon to season the finish. The bacon provides a deep, uniform greasiness that also smells wonderful after the 50th cinebench cycle.

(ok, that joke aside. You really can greatly improve the situation with a proper oleophobic polish like Plexus or a thin coat of Renaissance Wax to seal the surface and reduce the surface energy, and cleaning with any sort of solvent based cleaner really does make things worse.)

I was at the Apple store in Reston yesterday and took a look at the Midnight MBA they had on display. It does look really nice in person, and after picking it up, opening/closing the display, I didnt notice any fingerprints or smudges on it.

Good call, bacon has always been a great cleaner

So you cancelled your initial order because of the other people's opinions? Can you shed a little light as to why? I've never quite understood why people tend to value strangers opinions over their own.

I always listen to the advice of strangers. I was told to get an M2 air and it further made me realise i needed a Macbook Pro

Midnight blue looks good in pictures but in person it looks cheap along with the durability issues. Sticking with boring silver until something better comes along.

As someone whose midnight Air was delivered today....completely disagree with the cheap looking comment. It is stunning...I never saw it in an Apple store but in normal lighting, wow.

I was in a town without an Apple Store and couldn't see the colors in person to verify for myself, so I didn't have much to go on. And like I said, I was already torn between Midnight / a lighter color (Silver or Starlight).

I still really liked Starlight in person, not losing sleep over it lol

This reminds me of the first and LAST black car I bought. IMO, it's hard to beat the look of a shiny clean, waxed, glimmering black car. But it quickly shows dust and dirt the fastest of any color, then looking varying degrees of not that good, depending on how far away from it that you are. Of course for your laptop, viewing from further distances is not an option ;). Even though my black car was when I was in my 20', single and I was all about washing my car to keep it looking cool. ;) Blue is my favorite color, but I had to think long and hard back in 2015 when I bought my then new 2015 Mustang convertible. Their only Blue was very dark. I went with it. Like black, it looked amazing when clean. Replacing it with an mid-size SUV last year, I went white. I could never understand why my wife liked white as car color. Now I am in that club. They look fine until they have an 1/8" of dust! LOL So silver was an easy choice for my MBA.

I'm typing this from a midnight MBA M2 right now and dude, you are wrong. It looks anything other than cheap. It's sleek af, and I'm not noticing any durability issues.

You guys get too swayed by the cynics on the MR forums.

Nice to know someone appreciates the colour and hasn’t returned it.

I'll be honest, I wouldn't return it if I didn't like the color, because that's ridiculous to me. Regardless of the color, there's a screen that works, and the insides work fantastic. I picked midnight because I thought it looked cool, and I certainly agree. If I didn't love the color, I'd get over it.

For me its was between starlight and midnight, but I went midnight and no regrets.

I went to PC World years ago and got my hands on a Sony Vaio laptop in Orange. Was a nice colour actually but when I got the box home and opened it the laptop inside was the same model but this disgusting lime green colour.
The woman who sold it me though was an absolute sort so I let it slide

There is no need for a "face palm"

A lot of us want nothing to do with a machine that gets dirty so easily (and shows it)
That's a perfectly valid feeling to have about a product

I don't understand the point of the thread -- just to be "OMG LOL" at people?

Let's do better here - c'mon

Not to mention -- people look to a company like Apple to solve problems for them....not create them.

Again -- the folks defending Apple at every turn -- I just don't get it
Demand more from the MegaCorp folks!
This is why in EU their device prices are much higher than they should've been in US counterparts.
Apple factored all that in and added them to the cost of machines already. Customer will always lose no matter what.
More returns -> higher cost. A small group of people's perfectionism leads to everyone else's pain.
It is totally understandable to demand Apple produce higher quality products because they charge so much (even base model M1 MacBook Air is out of many people's reach), but IMO there should be a balance between demanding higher quality products over exchanging for the sake of perfection.
