So! What a day. Gave up on seeing it until Thursday and then I come home from dropping my daughter at school and there is a - yes - a FedEx truck parked out front of my truck. The longest wait - no FedEx guy - he was in the truck. Guy pops out and has what is clearly that rectangular Mac box! I think my first thought was actually "what bastard on my block is getting theirs before me..." So in the end LA FedEx came through as I was certain the earliest was going to be Wednesday.

Haven't had a big chance to sit down with it as I'm migrating my stuff over and doing clean install. This is still on my 17" right now. I'll post more when I'm moved over, hopefully soon.

Mine was originally slated for 11/1, but arrived today.

It didn't like having all my old iBook settings transferred over (using the Migration Assistant) - that gave me all kinds of crashing and problems right off the bat - so I erased and reinstalled. It's beautifully fast. No problems as far as I can see. I can't believe how nicely it's built - so much more solid than my iBook was, and none of this warping or badly fitting lid/screen that others talked about with the last revision (yet, at least).

Had anyone else noticed how spongy the trackpad buttons were on the later PBs? I was expecting the same on the MBP, but no - it's all clicky goodness.

Hmmm ... my FedEx tracking showed my 2.33GHz MBP arriving at Anchorage, AK 11:50am on 10/31, but no update after that - coming to Twin Cities, it should have "buddied up" with yours to Indianapolis, then on to MN <crosses fingers!>

Supposed to arrive 11/2, and that's probably not going to change at this point.

You might want to have a look at Carbon Copy Cloner if your "old" machine is not too old. Clone the drives across with the new machine in firewire target mode. You can google Carbon Copy Cloner, its a free download with a donate button if you like. Once cloned I like to "over install" the system (update in installer) so that it's still fresh - but your apps, prefs, everything will be idetical - even things like "recent items" menu is identical with this method. Seems faster than Apple migration, too - moved 60GB in an hour or so via FW800.

A little disappointed

Story of a switcher Part 1 -

I am calling this part 1 because there might be more stories and hopefully better ones. I got the macbook pro last nite and finally was breathing after a stressful shipping period. I always knew Apple had the best design and also they packaged their product so that was not a surprise. The Macbook Pro looks great and is thin and sleek. It weighs exactly 5.5 pounds (15") even though I had a hard disk upgrade to 160 GB and a RAM upgrade to 2GB. So I guess that weight change was negligible.

As I am just switching, I didnt have to use the migration assistant. The first thing I did was setup my airport. It didnt work with my Dlink DI-524 (D series) router. Not a fault with the Mac but the router. Reset the router and it worked.

Now I wanted to copy my music on to the Mac. I had couple of DVDs on which I had some mp3s. One of the DVDs wasn't written properly I guess. It copied half of the DVD and then said some file was not readable. This time I tried again. BUT NOW I tried the small stop copying button and the Finder was stuck. THERE WAS NO WAY OUT. I had to reboot like we do on Windows by pressing the power button down. THIS WAS A DISAPPOINTING START. I had to do it 3 times for that DVD.

One time I noticed was when I was copying a good DVD but went to the Disc Burning option. The Mac hung again and again I had NO OPTION but to reboot using the power button. I had called support and they asked me to do this.

I am hoping I have better stories coz if I don't then I am switching back. Even Windows XP handles that bad DVD properly and Mac OS should do a better job.

When your computer is reading/writing from/to CDs/DVDs, don't do anything else.
Wait until it's finished and then go about your business.

Also, sometimes Macs have a hard time reading CDs/DVDs written by Windows computers.
