Summer weather has arrived in New England. That means I’m no longer wearing my jacket with pockets large enough to hold the iPad mini. It remains to be seen if I will still carry the mini everywhere if I have to hold it instead of pocketing it. And I think bringing the Apple Pencil is now out of the question. I’ll definitely lose it without someplace to store it securely.

Something like this may meet the need.

Maybe a crossbody pack but not that thing. Take a look at the expression on the male models face. That about sums it up.

I have a Timbuk2 messenger bag that fits my MacBook Air that I like a lot. They have a small crossbody bag that looks like it might fit the bill. Thanks for the good idea.

I've had my mini 6 for a week now. I'll admit part of the reason for getting it was just to fill the 'mid season' (between the big Autumn/fall hardware releases) 'I need a new Apple toy' urge i get around this time of the year, but also because my 2021 IPP 12.9 just really hasn't been getting the love it deserves recently as I just find it a bit to big for my needs (75% of the time just as a consumption rather than creation device).
I remember feeling like i missed touch ID when Face ID first came along, but having been without it, other than my mac, for a few years now, i really wish the mini had it. Also the jelly scroll, kind of getting used to it now, but still not ideal. Really didn't get wheat the fuss was going from 60hz screen to a 120hz, but going back i can definitely notice it. So yeah, would i rather the mini have face ID and a promotion, brighter OLED screen? Hell yes! But that said, the size and weight of the mini really seem to be hitting a sweet spot for me when sitting on the sofa, in bed, note taking at my desk etc. I've got my fingers firmly crossed for a mini pro later in the year (though realistically that's just a dream) as that would be a day one purchase for me.
As it is, I'm seriously considering selling the 12.9 ipp before the new model comes out and resale prices drop and also going for an iPhone 14 pro (non max version) this year as the ipad mini can now fill the more portable bigger screen void, and mean i have a smaller lighter phone.
Anyway, just my thoughts, so to the original question, overall yes, I'm happy with the mini (though as always there could be enhancements, but that just keeps me on the hook for the 7/'Pro' :p )

The best thing iPad Mini 6 did for me is to make me take it back and get an iPad Pro 11 instead.

Hadn't used an iPad in years but Mini 6's redesign initially looked great, and I wanted it as a second screen for videos. But I'm thankful the Mini came with such shoddy QA, dreadful jelly and bad UI scaling that by the time I returned it I was really set on getting an iPad anyway and went along with the iPad Pro 11 instead.

Best thing I ever did, it's turned into a massive productivity machine and it's a great experience reading, watching, and making art on it.

I received a Mini 6 for my birthday a few weeks ago. Space grey, 64gb model $399 at Best Buy. I bought a dbrand real leather skin and a ESR screen protector for it.

So far I love it for what I use it for. Reading forums and browsing the web on the couch, playing games, sitting it on the treadmill and watching YouTube videos and movies during my daily 45min runs. I don’t use it for any kind of work as I work from home and have a full desktop setup in my home office. Basically it’s a toy.

I noticed the jelly scroll right away and it was so bad that I had to check out demo units in the store to make sure there wasn’t something wrong with mine. Nope all like that. Since using it for a few weeks and not actively checking for jelly scroll I’ve all but forgotten it’s there. Do I wish it had a promotion display like my 13 pro? Of course I do. But overall I’m very happy with it. I’ve only had one other iPad and that was a first gen mini years ago. I obviously don’t need a iPad as I’ve survived with just my phone all these years but it’s a nice toy to have and I enjoy using it.

Well that was my question do they all have it? cause I got a silver 256gb a few months ago to try and didn't notice it, yesterday I got a SG 64gb and it's shocking.

It's in portrait only due to the panel orientation (which they changed this time around vs Mini 5)
Ok, i'm not seeing a wobble like in that video above, think it's just text going blurry from scrolling too fast.

Anyone's charge cable hard to pull out?

Did you get the 3rd gen? My wife has a gen 1, is there much diff between gen 2 & 3?

It was for the first charge or two, I think they all are when they’re new. I had trouble with the charge cable on my Mini 5 for longer than I did with the Mini 6.

Nice. Yeah I got the gen 3. Not much of a difference between 2 and 3, but 3 came with the new M1 processor, and slightly lighter.

I know there's been a lot of talk about how the M1 processor feels underused on the iPad due to OS limitations. But personally I have appreciated having a better processor as I use a lot of process-intensive web apps and applications that send the usual laptop fans running, but feels very smooth on this.

These have been on sale lately, so I grabbed one to try out. FYI, I am one of the "only Mini" types - I find the other iPad sizes cumbersome and have been using Minis for years, currently with the Mini 5.

Overall, I find the Mini 6 to be a mostly confused product.

The redesigned chassis is generally good as a shrunken iPad Air. The slightly smaller profile and reduced weight are welcome, and the additional height (portrait) or width (landscape) are nice in certain situations. I do notice the reduced width in portrait mode in the rendering or certain websites. It's not a huge deal and is something I could adjust to, but switching back and forth between it and the Mini 5 its easy to see that the original width of the Mini 5 is preferable.

I am definitely not an engineer, but appreciate great design and am annoyed with poor design. Increasing the side bezels on the Mini 6 feels like something to support the product line, not the product - it is to match the larger bezels of the Air line and not the Pro line. The more narrow bezels of the Mini 5 is proof that it is not an engineering concern, but a financial/product hierarchy one. That is a poor design choice for someone trying to go Mini to Mini.

The screen quality is fine, basically a lateral move. The jelly scroll thing, to my eyes, is blatantly obvious and jarring to use. The majority of my usage is scrolling web pages in portrait mode, and every time I move the screen the text tilts sideways. I see the same effect in landscape on the Mini 5, but that orientation isn't used for scrolling often, so if forced to choose between the two the landscape jelly wins every time.

Several in this thread say they have forgotten about it with regular use, and I'm sure it's something that could be adjusted to. But it's also (again) poor design, which leaves a bad taste in your mouth after spending hundreds of dollars. It almost certainly will be something "corrected" in the next iteration of the Mini, with this generation going down as the "jelly edition" historically. Whenever Apple has one of these models with some known flaw the resale value reflects on that, and I think that the value of the Mini 6 will drop pretty dramatically whenever it is updated. Also notice that the Mini 5 has retained value quite well relatively, speaking to some of these poor design choices made.

The UI changes in iOS 15 are a clear downgrade for me, and this also applies to the Mini 5. Basically everything they did to the home screen layout and the implementation (forcing) of widgets looks worse. The spacing on the smaller screen is really bad. It's amazing that they put out a fully redesigned chassis of the Mini 6 and made it look so poor in the UI design. They clearly did not put as much time into correctly rendering for the Mini line as they did other iPads.

In summary, I guess I feel like the Mini 6 wasn't made for me, a current Mini 5 user. It seems like Apple made this product to get new users into the (already existing) conveniences of the Mini size with the more modern external shape, aka those that overlooked the product previously because they saw it as "outdated." For someone that has already appreciated how user-friendly the Mini size is as a consumption device, I find many of the flaws of the Mini 6 either lateral or downgrade moves, which means the product is definitely being returned.

It will be interesting to see what Apple does with the Mini this fall. Historically, that's nothing, for at least another year. But the Pro line will move to the more power-efficient M2, potentially opening the door for a Mini Pro that wouldn't suffer as greatly battery life-wise. 128GB base, 120hz screen for around $700 starting sounds about right. If not a Pro, would they quietly update the product to the M1, joining the Air? Would they quietly "fix" the jelly scroll? I find it unlikely, but maybe. There is potential that they stop abandoning the Mini line as often.

This has turned into a very long reply and should have probably been it's own post, but here we are. Thanks for following along to anyone that made it this far. Happy for all those that are satisfied with and enjoying their Mini 6s.

@IJBrekke

A really great post. I echo all of those sentiments.

I managed to come to those conclusions just from in store use at first and now by getting more Mini6 hands on time from one in the family. I probably would have bought (and returned) one if not for Apple hiking the entry price by 25%

Very much just "different" than my Mini 5 and, in my opinion and for how I use it, not "better" at all

Phenomenal!
Honestly wouldn't change a thing..
For what I do with my iPads, I have no need to have constant CPU updates, etc

I browse, watch videos, play a couple games (Retro Bowl & Retro Goal), check email, etc

If I saw someone selling one with more storage and perhaps with cellular, I might snag it actually.

(mine is a complete base model)
