I am starting teacher training in September and am buying a 12.9 Ipp 2 next month. Very excited for iOS 11 but would have made the switch without its extra features as I use my MacBook Pro (15” 2012 retina) only sparingly nowadays.
I will be making and presenting power points, using and moving pdf files and pictures (little editing) and marking work. Everything is easily within the capabilities of an iPad Pro today, Let alone what future versions of iOS will bring.

Getting closer, I think iOS 11 will make the difference. Using my MBA and desktop less and less since I got the IPP 9.7 a few months ago, have not found anything I miss - really a change in workflow to use the cloud apps for storage. Going to install Affinity and LumaFusion and begin doing more photo/video on the iPad.

LumaFusion, eh? Have you used it before? Is it better than iMovie and in that case, how good is it?

Funny how a lot of people were freaking out and up in arms about the "IOSing" of Mac OS . Yet It's quite a different reaction when it seems like apple is slowly Mac OSing the iPad. :) a ways to go but It seems they might be tippy toeing that way. o_O BTW, I use my iPad 90% of the time as well.

I just can't see myself using the IPP as a main device if I am unable to open multiple word/pdf documents at once. Too much of a hassle that way. If this would be an option on the IPP than I could see myself using it as my main device and just an imac for the real labour.

I've just read this whole thread and it's fascinating.

I currently do all my work (reading, typing, powerpoint, web browsing, audio analysis in Praat) on a Macbook Air and I cannot imagine for a minute switching over to an iPad for one minute.

Do you guys not miss the trackpad?
Why would I miss the trackpad with a tablet. The entire screen is basically a trackpad.

I suppose if I put the iPad on a stand and set it up with a physical keyboard I might miss it, but I do everything on screen.

I think what most were pleasantly surprised with regarding the iPad upgrades, was how much more oriented iOS 11 is actually over the iPhone. If you watch the keynote or have not watched it, it's definitely focused on the iPad more so than it is on the iPhone with iOS 11. Once. iOS 11 officially releases in September, I'm curious to see everybody's feedback on how they view it with the iPad and it's overall capabilities.

I mainly use iPad for travel. I still have my laptop for home but it has gotten easier to break away from it.

Not going to replace Mac/Windows unless there is external memory support and more features.
imagine someone gives you an SD card or USB Flash drive etc and you simply cannot access the content..that alone is a major problem.
The Files App seems to be a game changer but still lack of external memory access is a big barrier.

I used my ipad a lot than my rMBP because I travel a lot. I can't sell my notebook because it is not dead yet and will use it for FCPX.

For me the iPad is not going to replace my rMacBook until it allows me to torrent, supports all the popular video formats, and lets me access files from a USB hard drive.
It's probably never going to replace my Windows desktop, or at least not until I no longer game on it.

iPad can only be used for consumption. It's not an efficient means for content creation as you can't use a mouse.

I get tired of hearing this. There's a lot that can be done without a mouse. I use my iPad for all of my work that doesn't require Xcode.

Here are a few things I've done on my iPad in the last few weeks:

- implemented a gopher server in Forth
- started writing a gopher search engine in Python
- debugged a gopher client for iOS
- wrote a caldendar application for work
- wrote a tool to extract part numbers from a PDF report and generate a set of barcode labels for each item
- wrote a custom sales progress report extracting data from a periodically issued excel file
- wrote a decompiler and assembler for a virtual machine architecture in Forth
- did a site survey for a lighting project
- worked up several quotes based on the site survey
- helped my kids debug some games they are writing in Python on their iPhones

Apps used for the above: Pythonista, Textastic, Working Copy, Prompt, Coda, Transmit, Retro12, Paper, Numbers, Pages, Pixelmator, and Documents 5.

Yes, for my needs, a iPad would suffice. A few months ago, I switched to an iPad 12.9 as my primary device, but with the lack of iPad features, I ended up switching back to a MacBook Pro. But, Apple fixed a lot of those in iOS 11. Soooo, goodbye MacBook Pro, and hello iPad + keyboard.

This is a great list. I'm going to have to check out some of these apps.

This thread is showing how lots of people are finding more confidence and convenience in the iPad as their main device. It's great to see in my opinion.

Not everybody's workload can be catered for on an iPad today, and not everybody is willing to make it work where it can. But Apple has shown as time moves on it's sure getting more and more capable.

I for one support the iPad becoming the main device of many as it's cheaper, lighter, a great experience and cuts out a lot of the crappy parts of PC ownership for many. It's certainly capable of delivering a better experience than similarly priced Windows 10 laptops many of the iPad users would otherwise have to choose from.

No to both right now, but I am working toward making an iPad a part of my creation flow.

My yes/no relationship with iPads continues. I thought after returning the 9.7 iPP I was done, but iOS 11 and ProMotion have me very eager to try one of the new models. If I can perform a lot of my blogging on the iPad (writing, image edits etc.) as easily as on my iMac (i.e. as with none of google's this browser isn't supported bunk), all I will need a Mac for is heavy lifting (video conversion etc. Unfortunately, grammarly have not added a mobile version so that is another reason why I'll still need a desktop).

Due to the new iPP update and the promise of iOS 11, I am not upgrading my 27" iMac for at least another 9-12 months now. I want to gage usage of both. Just debating if I should wait until iOS 11 is released to jump or get one this week.

I am about 90% iPad only. I don't do alot of document creation but the little I have done on the iPad was easy. My MBP is really just mainly an iTunes hub. My 2 kids and I each have an iPhone and iPad with different playlists and photo albums that iTunes keeps synced. Eventually when the kids are older they will likely get their own laptops and sync their own devices. At that point my wife and I will get a laptop or desktop to share.

When that happens I will likely use Photos iCloud. My only real need for a laptop/desktop will be my music. Most of it came from cds and so as far as I know iTunes is the only way to get that music onto a new iPhone/iPad

Nah that doesn't work. You can't use it for effective work if your finger has to touch the iPad screen. You also can't be productive with such a small screen creating stuff. You might _think_ you can but I'd pretty quickly show you where you're going wrong.

I wouldn't hire anybody who claims they can use an iPad for effective content creation. Again, it's too easy poke holes in the user's claims.

How many people here now solely use an iPad as their main device and iPhone alongside it .. or how many of you are now selling things to actually do this. I'm doing this now, and want to know how many of you are doing the same and why.

I've been using a 12.9 inch iPad as my sole computer for about a year and a half now, at both home and work. Never regretted the choice, I much prefer having iOS on both my big and small computer. Very excited about the updates coming with iOS 11, will be a big improvement to an already great device.

A part of me wants an iPad but I can't see myself giving up the Mac. There's still to many things that are easier to do on Mac than on iOS. Maybe an iPad Pro with the Apple Keyboard would change that. But I still want full access to all my files which means having a Finder. Plus the trackpad on the MBP is much better than touching the screen to change between Apps.
