Just curious, are you using this setting. I’ll try and if I can make it though the day I’ll use it. My surface pro 8 has this feature and is still showing over actual capacity over design capacity, so I’m inclined to try it in the iPhone. What do others think?

Yes. Using it. So far the phone shows only two charge cycles, yet I've been using it ~2 weeks. So it is working as intended.

15 Plus has plenty of battery life, so I see no downside.

The feature is there because Apple's engineers has proven that this feature extends the useful life of the battery. Use it or not. Up to you.

For those complaining that it "doesn't work" because the phone charges past 80% on occasion, that's by design.

For those saying that "I don't think it makes much difference," you don't work at Apple, do you? And you're not an engineer, are you? So what does your "opinion" matter, other than to display your ignorance? You can also "believe" that the earth is flat if you want to or that Donald Trump won the last presidential election in the United States. Have at it. Your belief plus $4 or $5 will get you a drink at Starbucks.

Two cycle for two weeks? Thatr's great. My 15 Pro Max shows 8 cycles, using it since launch.

Yup. Just checked again. Still 2 cycles (Settings...General...About...scroll to bottom...Cycle Count). I've been using it to play Pandora radio for hours each day, too. Never seems to get below 60 percent or so. Then I stick it on the charger again, once every day or two.

Not a chance. The battery is a consumable part and I'm paying for AppleCare. I'll have it replaced when it's hit enough cycles.

Some of y'all are treating your phone and Mac batteriers like the most boring possible hobby 😂
They’ll only replace under AppleCare after it’s dropped to 80% life, and not everyone wants to pay for that extra option believe it or not.

Almost as boring a hobby as reading the comments on here and remarking on them 😉

No, I am not an Apple engineer. Nor do I play one on TV or on the internet.

So yes, I'm sure it probably does save the battery somewhat. The question is, how much though? I am on my launch month 13PM and (according to the Apple engineers who designed this thing) my battery health still is 94%. And I charge it to 100% all the time. Though what I do is I take it off the charger when it does reach 100%, rather than let it sit there for hours. And I rarely let it ever dip below 40%. Believe the lowest I've seen is 35%.

So I think that helps as well. Anyway, no way would I limit myself to 80% full charge. But YMMV of course.

As far as charging, I kinda treat my iPhone similar to my laptop. Plugged in (well on wireless charging dock) the entire time I'm at my desk.

Hence for me, the 80% is a non-issue considering the battery charge doesn't go down on normal days. Now on vacation, I'll be charging to 100% and bringing a power bank as insurance.

Preventing it from dropping too low has a similar effect as preventing it from going over 80% for extended periods.. both high and low charges shorten the lifespan of lithium batteries. So the more time the battery spends around 50%, the longer it’ll last. You also did indeed improve the life by taking it off charger quickly, as like I said.. you’ve effectively reduced the time the phone spends at a full charge.

Additionally, the other big factor that determines battery health is the time it spends at higher temperatures. So taking it off the charger also reduces heat. I like to put the phone on the counter granite or an aluminum thawing board while it charges to keep it cool. Unfortunately wireless charging usually means higher battery temps.

ESR makes wireless chargers with a fan built in. I think it's a great idea and makes a real difference in charging speeds, but Magsafe does do a pretty good job of wicking away heat on a bare iPhone. With a case that traps heat, a fan can definitely make an outsized difference.

LISEN and some other brands make car chargers with a peltier active cooling element built in. It works amazing in the car, but oddly there is no at home version of this. Would be nice.

So you barely you use your phone. It is simple math. One cycle means 100%. If you use 20% per day you need 5 days to get 1 cycle.
If you charge your phone so frequently it is good idea to have this 80% limit on. But you also showed some ignorance. No one has to be an engineer. If you need whole battery than you have to charge it to 100%. Moreover. It is another simple math. Economic site. New battery isn't that expensive. Especially if you have AppleCare+ (in my country we don't have AC+). So for some people it just doesn't make any sense to stick with 80% and I get it.

New battery isn't that expensive. Especially if you have AppleCare+
Mind you though if you’ve not had to make claim against AppleCare+ prior to that battery replacement you’ve already ended up paying way over what it would cost to replace the battery without it.

Same as any other insurance. you pay for it but you are not sure (usually even don't want to) if you take anything back
Still battery in apple service or any other authorized service isn't that expensive. I mean it is not cheap but it is like small part of a new phone. It is way more expensive when you want to exchange MacBook battery. That's why I don't understand why there is no 80% limit in MacBooks. Their battery optimization in MacBooks doesn't work at all.

Only 2 charging cycles after 2 weeks???? how?! do you even use your phone? I am on cycle 16 and I have been using "charge to only 80%" since

When iPhone reaches 60% she puts it on a charger. So 20% per day. So it is possible but I also said she barely uses her phone.

One more thing. It could be a placebo effect but. Today after 6h I lost 14%. You may say not too much but on the other hand I barely used my phone. I counted that it should last 6/6,5h sot (I counted that for whole battery) On the other after charging to 100% it could last 8h. Significantly more. What do you think about that?

Yeah, it's kinda crazy. Checked again this morning, and it still says 2 cycle counts! Yesterday I played Pandora for at least 6 hours on the thing.

It got down to about 52 percent this morning, so I charged it, and it was back up to 80 percent in no time.

Here’s the deal though, unless you’re paying for AC+ monthly (which makes it a bit more expensive over time), even if you abuse your battery, chances are the battery will still be 80% or better at the end of the standard 2 years of AppleCare. Apple will not replace your battery if it’s 80% or better just because your contract is expiring.

New battery isn't that expensive.

I read that the batteries in the 14 Plus now cost $99 to replace. I assume 15 Plus will be the same or a bit more. Not horrible, but it's a far cry from the $40 I used to pay to replace my 8 Plus battery.

Honestly, $99 was the original price for battery replacements. They lowered it after #battery-gate and now I guess it’s back to old pricing.

The annoying part is when you need to charge 2-3x a day even on standby when the battery health drops to like 83% but Apple won’t replace it because it’s still above 80%.

Granted, I think the abysmal battery life when battery health is 80-85% is more of an issue with iPhones with smaller batteries like the SE and mini.

I've also encountered the reluctance to replace a battery in the Apple store. I don't give them a choice. It's my choice, not theirs. I'm the customer. I say I came here to replace the battery, and I want you to replace the battery. Now.

They've never said no to this when I said no to their no.

Yes indeed this, my 12 Pro Max was on 83% after 3 years and was struggling to last the evening without having to plug it in some days.
Theres absolutely no way I would’ve paid to extend the warranty at that point, just checked and they’re charging £85 for a battery replacement on that.

Then you’ve got better powers of persuasion as the AppleCare guidelines basically say it has to be below 80%. Even if you’re paying out of pocket they still won’t replace the battery unless their diagnostic app says below 80%.

It’s BS as I’ve had the same situation where the battery is supposedly in the low 80% health range, but the battery craps out after just a couple of hours. Their app isn’t very accurate as it only takes into account total capacity but doesn’t account for the much higher internal resistance of worn out lithium Batteries that significantly reduces capacity with high drain usage.

Maybe 6h but previously you said that you don’t allow your phone to drop below 60%. That’s what matters
