Doesn't that kill most of the appeal of a Google phone?

IPhones getting widgets and giving up their swipe to unlock feature. Google's Android phones looking, acting and being priced like iPhones. Samsung phones combusting. Trump vs Clinton for the US presidency. I think all this strangeness was spoken of in a prophecy somewhere.:eek:
Not so much. It will still be customizable compared to iOS

Android 7.1 coming to current Nexus devices and Pixel C, will land before the end of 2016 as a dev preview
http://www.androidpolice.com/2016/1...vices-pixel-c-will-land-end-2016-dev-preview/

So let me get this straight, the brand new Pixel phones launch in October with Android 7.1 obviously, but last years top of the line Google phone, the Nexus 6P will get a beta of 7.1 in December, and the final release of 7.1 sometime next year ? WTF Google ? What happened to Nexus devices being so quick to get fast Android updates ? Now just the newest phones get it, and last years devices already have a long wait ?

I am no iPhone fan, but god damn Apple does updates right, The new iPhone 7 launched with iOS 10, and then a crap load of older iPhone's also got the same iOS 10 update, like just one week later.

It's all about the moolah !!! ;)

I'm not sure about that. The 6P and 5X have had to run a special version of Android and all updates have been slow on them. The 5X had real performance problems for a couple of months until this forked version was built.

This has to be a joke? Wow!

It's obvious why google would hold out 7.1 for other phones, but that doesn't make it right. They were selling Nexus 6P's literally yesterday with one of the selling features being "always up-to-date" Android. Yikes.

To further your point about iPhone updates, I believe I got the iOS 10 update BEFORE the iPhone 7 came out, actually. And I'm using an ancient iPhone 5!

People like me on T-Mobile's JoD plan, are ****ed if they want a Pixel phone.

And for some dumb unknown reason Google says Verizon would be a great carrier to team up with. WTF ? They're the worst, and have even admitted to locking it down already.

The Project Fi carriers are T-Mobile and Sprint. Those two would've made more sense to launch it with carrier wise, than the Nazi Verizon ****s.

Oh well, looks like my next upgrade on JoD might be an iPhone 7 Plus, ( and i hate the iPhone ) once a Jailbreak gets released.

Last year I bought a brand new Nexus 6 which I purchased on Amazon for $199 which I love and I only get a new phone whenever the battery dies so that leaves me out.

Yeah when the 6P came out, the one year old Motorola Nexus 6 had amazing sales for like $250, for still brand new phones, unopened in box. Great frigging deal IMO.

Google should do the same for the 6P.

No Huawei tablet or Andromeda today. Those were the biggest news I was hoping for.

Watch this video, these phones actually look Fugly :( They look cheap, and weird in a bad way. I find the 6P a much cleaner more polished and higher end looking phone than these Pixel's. And what's the purpose of that strange glass panel on the upper half, seems to serve no purpose, but just look ugly, and the Jay Leno chin ? WTF this is 2016, chins should be gone, and more screen less bezel.

Still learning about them and looking forward to the reviews, but for now, these devices are an easy pass for me.

I'll wait for the s8 unveil.

Aaaannnndddd.... yet more confirmation that Google is eschewing it's roots (no pun intended) and saying FU to all the tech loyalists who supported them since the beginning. I can almost guarantee that Verizon will provide their own updates, which will mean no more instant updates. Get used to the 8 month wait times the rest of us suffer. Good job Google in changing the industry...not.

My guess is that Google will also be bootloader locking their phones in the near future. Maybe not with the pixel, but I'll bet they will eventually lock it down as well. I see they took the worst pages from Apple, but also took crappy ideas from Samsung like delaying OS updates for older devices ostensibly to encourage you to upgrade.

It's not terribly fugly, just very plain looking. The iPhone, as boring as it looks at least is very thin and has that stealth front screen. I'm disappointed it has those horrid HTC touches, those awful chamfers to make it seem thinner than it is, and yeah it seems too thick for $800. But that doesn't surprise me with the HTC 10 being one of the thickest phones, if not the thickest flagship in 2016, and probably 2015.

What's the official deal with the top glass portion of the back? Some of us were hoping for wireless charging, but I'm sure that would have been mentioned in the specs. It's got antenna lines so it's not for that. Is it just a design decision? Maybe that moron Matias Duarte was in the room and made a suggestion.

I thought the glass back was going to be a touchpad for ergonomic use with index finger like with the fingerprint on back vs reaching with thumb but it's looking more like it's a half ass design decision. Either go all glass or all metal with antenna lines. That ugliness is probably just a scheme to sell more cases which they have a lot available.

I thought it would be removable at first, then maybe it's some kind of moto like proprietary connection..when I found out it was neither I thought well great decision lol..of course every company makes mistakes so be remorseful and go back to Huawei, they know how to design a phone

As an iPhone user who occasionally plays away from home (have had a couple of Windows phones and Nexus devices) I had hoped this might be something to tempt me into buying one, even if just as a second phone.

I don't think it's a BAD phone - it's just there is no compelling reason to pick it over an iPhone or Galaxy. It's almost as though they looked at the competition and that dictated its design (Google keep going on about how they "designed it from the ground up" - sure, HTC didn't have any input, which is why it looks identical to a One A9 with a glass panel strapped to its back) and price. It just seems a bit safe.

I'm in the same boat as you as you. I'll probably still end up buying the Pixel later in the year, but I really don't think it's worth the price. I feel a bit like a hippocrite, as I tell my friends that I don't think the iPhone in its current iteration is worth $650+. However, I want a modern, stock Android device, and the Pixel is the only option. Just the price of entry, I guess. Like the iPhone.

People who post an opinion based on a phone as old as a Note 4 on the state of Android today is so odd. Hardware not impressive? Ha, ok. For me, no wireless charging an Google dropping the front facing speakers is disappointing, but so Apple :)

I mea, to be honest with you, Even looking at Android, not much as changed. It is still the same look and feel and I don't like it. IOS just feels better for me.

It doesn't seem like they did anything that ambitious, just an odd design decision. Maybe they thought consumers would spend the extra money with that design decision. I'm honestly baffled at a lot of things with this release, so hey why not a half glass back.

The only reason I can think of is that with that panel it doesn't look exactly like an iPhone. If it is glass then it's just a functionless thing that could break. It's a real shame that Google's strategy has been to pick an existing model from their OEM and give it a slight tweak rather than designing something of their own. Even the color choices are either bog-standard with that odd ugly looking blue thrown in.

To me they didn't have to do much to make this a worthy phone. Just make it a bit slimmer, more unique looking and at least water resistant would've made it a buy for me.

I've got mine preordered from the Google Store. Expensive? Absolutely.

I don't care because I'm used to paying Apples Tax year after year after year... it's easily worth it to have the experience. I've had every new version of Android and Nexus to date and I'm not stopping now.

Ugly? Yes Indeed... but my identity isn't tied to my smartphone. No Camera Bump is a big plus, it's a first generation Pixel... Google has to start somewhere.

Google Assistant! Yes, bring it on! That's a big plus for my money. Google Now has been terrific, it'll be that much better on the Pixel XL.

Thanks Google :D

Nope, I will just go to BB (yes, they are going to carry it) and have my way with the display model. :)
