iPad Are you upgrading to the M2 iPads?

Now that Stage Manager is available on older iPad Pros, has anyone else cancelled their upgrade plans? I was originally planning on upgrading my 2020 iPad Pro to the M2 model since I was upset that Stage Manager was exclusive to newer iPads, but now that it’s available on my iPad Pro, I’m going to wait until Apple either introduces OLED to the iPad Pro, my storage gets completely full (512GB), or I break my iPad in an unfortunate accident. Who else has cancelled their upgrade plans, and who is buying the M2 iPad Pro anyway? I want to hear your thoughts

I’m on M1 iPad Pro so no plan to upgrade anyways. But even if I’m on my old 2018 iPad Pro, I’d still hold off until seeing how good M2 iPad Pro is in terms of performance before jumping the gun.

I have an M1 12.9 iPad Pro and I just can’t see why I would upgrade? MagSafe? It’s such an incremental upgrade I’ll be holding off. Unless there is a feature introduced nobody is talking about.

So I am looking to upgrade soon. I’m going to wait for the new models, but not against snapping up an M1 on sale if the price is right/the new models are barely different. I’m undecided on the 11” or 12.9” though.

I just want Apple to get rid of the 128GB and 256GB options, start the lineup at the same entry price at 512GB, move the camera to the top side in landscape mode, give us an Always On Super Retina XDR OLED Display like in the iPhone 14 Pros, upgrade the port to Thunderbolt 4, separate RAM upgrades from storage upgrades at checkout, and give us the option for 24GB or 32GB of RAM, and I know the switch to OLED isn’t happening with these new iPad Pros.

I’m on a 10.5 iPad Pro. The plan for me is to upgrade ONLY if the M2 has enough features for my needs, otherwise, I’ll “upgrade“ to an M1 on sale as they clear stock.

Hoping for mini led but will get it regardless. Don't care about OLED on an iPad too much.

I got the 1TB m1 Mac Pro 12.9, id upgrade for a larger size (15.9), a 16:9 aspect ratio (no more black bars on Netflix) and noticeably better screen (brightness and black handling). It‘s an investment to upgrade + buy a new magic keyboard. Would need the device to fit what I use it for better then it does now to the point of three grand.

They wont be able to pawn off a slight camera upgrade and m2 processor to me and pretend like its worth the money

I’ll probably nab a discounted M1 11” to upgrade an iPad 6th gen in the household.

My M1 2TB iPad Pro is still king. I don't expect any advancements with the M2 chip. External Monitor support most likely coming in Dec update. At this point, treat the 2022 model as an extreme minor upgrade.

The M2 Air has series heat problems [since there is no fan] With the iPad Pro also being a fanless design, would most likely have the same issues.

- It is confirmed that Apple's vision of AOD is pure trash and a huge battery drain. Vast majority of 14 pro-owners have turned it off completely or used rarely.
- Existing Thunderbolt 4 Port operates at the same speeds as the M1 Pro/M1 Max MacBook Pros.
- I do NOT see Apple giving 24GB of RAM for the iPad Pro for a long time. Even with iPadOS 16, the 16GB model has no advantage over the 8GB.

I tend to agree except I am skeptical even on the first 2... iPhone 15 pro/ultra is rumored to still start at 128, makes me doubt about iPad pro moving to 256GB but you never know... Camera on top might mean a notch, since that's where the pencil charges, unless Apple find another way to charge it... I doubt it....
Thunderbolt 4 is out of the question since it's not in the M2 air, and wouldn't make any difference on iPad anyway.

This upgrade scheme is called MacBook. You need to buy a MacBook to enjoy these benefits /s

seriously though, 256GB will be here to stay for a while, with half the r/w performance just like m2 MacBook air did.

Moving the camera on the top side in landscape almost eliminates portrait mode usage. Idk if they want to do that.

AOD on iPad is going to be a burning nightmare. Plus the cost of OLED is going to be sky high. If you are willing to pay base iPad Pro at $2500, good for you.

Thunderbolt is the only possibility I can expect apple do soon-ish.

I don’t think separate upgrade is an Option, unless apple is willing to redesign The chip to make RAM even more integrated into the processor, which, can happen, but don’t know if.

32GB of RAM is useless on iPad Pro unless it runs macOS equivalent.

I have a M1 1TB 12.9” iPad Pro. I see no reason to upgrade. It seems like the M2 won’t have significant performance improvements. The M1 enough performance for anything I run on the iPad and the screen is exceptional. I’m not sure what they could upgrade to entice me. I’ll wait for more than an incremental upgrade.

I will be upgrading from a iPad Air 3 to a 12.9” iPad Pro. I’m not sure if I’ll get a M1 on sale or M2 . I use my current iPad for contract signing so I wanting something bigger. Just don’t know what the new iPad Pro is going to offer to make it more appealing over the already great M1 iPad Pros.

I have a 2020 IPP and I will upgrade if the M2 IPP has landscape camera as I also want extended screen support - not fussed about stagemanager but I do get why it will be useful/needed for extended support. As it looks like extended monitor support will not be out until Xmas ish that will give me time to see just how good the M2 IPP is.

My 2020 IPP still performs brilliantly so it won't be a performance decision - purely a feature decision.

The only reason i would upgrade at this point is if they add OLED, clamshell mode, or if something happens to my current iPad. Other than that my current one is performing perfectly. I do wish i had external display support but I’ve gone ten years without it so i can hold off a little while longer.

I have the 2018 12.9” iPad Pro, 256gb. Unfortunately, I’m running out of space due to using it for photography, so I was looking at upgrading either way, especially since I’ve recently just upgraded to a higher megapixel camera, and that is going to make it worse. Probably looking at 1TB min. But, if there’s no significant feature improvements between the m2 and m1, I may just see what deals are happening on the M1 after the next gen announcements. Or even the 2020 if there’s still any new stock sitting somewhere.

I used to look forward to Apple events to see all the new tech and features, but more and more lately I feel like there’s less new things being added to Apple devices to get excited about. I especially can’t stand when they add a feature that’s been available across competitor devices for a while, and they act like they just invented time travel.

I got an m1 pro already and it flies along, never a hiccup. No upgrades for me, got the 14 pro max coming and typing this on an m2 air. Ive already spent way too much on apple in the last year lol. My iPad is my least used device now that I have a MacBook so I see my pro lasting me for a long time. I still keep it for its cellular ability more then anything. I travel many places with bad wifi so I just use it as a laptop replacement for those scenarios

posts like these gives apple more incentive to restrict features from older devices - it pushes that group of people who are otherwise happy with their devices to hand over $$ and saves dev costs on apple's end from not having to implement these new features on older hardware.
