posts like these gives apple more incentive to restrict features from older devices - it pushes that group of people who are otherwise happy with their devices to hand over $$ and saves dev costs on apple's end from not having to implement these new features on older hardware.
Or to look at it another way.….Makes me think that if apple opened up one of the bigger software features that people wanted to older devices, maybe something bigger and better either software, hardware, or both could be on the near horizon which would drive the sales of the newer devices.

Oh yeah for sure. On the surface, it looks like a favor but definitely did the maths to backport just enough features to give those users a taste and then wanting more. Kinda like the slide over feature with ios9 multi tasking for air 1 users.

I’m all for the bigger and better though. Hopefully what’s announced is not just a simple spec bump. Weird thing is, there’s just not a lot of rumors other than magsafe and the M2 chip floating around. Maybe the camera on top in landscape as well. Wondering what the bigger and better could be?

In all honesty, though highly unlikely in the next month, I’m really hoping for that 14” IPP that was rumored a few months ago. That I would plunk down some money on. iPad is my main device in the last 2 years. A bigger screen would be a huge win for me.

In the back of my head, I’m kind of thinking in a weird way that since the M1 is already capable as is for the 11 & 12.9”, those might just get some of the basic physical updates (MagSafe/camera location/4 pin accessory connector). Enough to justify a new model to drive some new sales or pull people up from the older devices and maybe they reserve the M2 for the rumored 14” as it would be better at handling the thermals.

Currently have the 12.9 M1 iPad Pro. For me, the only reason I would upgrade is if they release an iPad Pro with a bigger screen. I've had MacBooks (Pro and Air) in the past and for my work and leisure needs and wants, I vastly prefer the flexibility and functionality of the iPad Pro coupled with the Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil. But I would love a bigger screen, at least 15 inches.

Larger screens would be the main driver for me. M1 or M2 will not matter. I would rather have two USB-Cs, one on each short side than Mag safes or induction. Personally, I would like the iPhone 14 Pro camera system but that is not likely.

Yes. Probably. But only because I’m still rocking a first gen 9.7 iPad Pro!

So I am looking to upgrade soon. I’m going to wait for the new models, but not against snapping up an M1 on sale if the price is right/the new models are barely different. I’m undecided on the 11” or 12.9” though.
Not looking to go to the new platform for a while yet...

I just "upgraded" from an Air 2 to (the same form factor but faster!) 9.7 iPad Pro

I have an M1 12.9 iPad Pro and I just can’t see why I would upgrade? MagSafe? It’s such an incremental upgrade I’ll be holding off. Unless there is a feature introduced nobody is talking about.
What feature I wonder? The screen, the speakers are perfect and M1 eats current iPadOS for breakfast?

Only if there's proper ipadOS16 release, new magic keyboard with more ports, function row, better material in its build and if iPad gets at least one additional port - either 3.5mm audio or second usb4.

M2 would be blazing fast on an iPad. I am waiting to see what they announce this month in terms of what the new IPP will actually be. So many conflicting rumors.

OLED in an iPad will not be coming any time soon. Would love to see it on an iPad but I doubt it for a while.

Stage Manager seems to be a hot mess. First off iPad doesn't do a great job as a primary computing device at least not for me. As much as Samsung makes gimmicky software their implementation of DEX seems a lot more usable but the thing is for either platform you are limited by it being a mobile OS. IF I needed a tablet as a Primary computer I would get a Surface Pro because at least you are getting a full version of the OS and more than one port.

I don't think Apple will ever move the camera to landscape because of the aspect ratio of their tablets. If they ever went to a 16 x 10 format then it might be a possibility but for now with the 4 x 3 it makes more sense to have it in portrait.

As it is right now because I am not a power iPad user and don't draw or create art with it I have a 5th gen Air and am pretty happy. I would like the extras of the IPP but the cost of the base Air with discounts over the base IPP with discounts is still too bitter a pill for me to swallow and justify.

Even with M2 I doubt I will be getting the Pro. Might wait until next year when there might be an M3 version depending what the M3 brings to the table.

Just got my iPad Pro 3rd generation 11 inch with the m1 and absolutely see no reason to upgrade it to the m2 model. Cannot possibly see an iPad be much faster than it is with the m1…. I thought my iPad Air 3 was fast, and thought my friends iPad 9 was slightly faster, like barely noticeable than my iPad Air 3 if at all, but this iPad Pro 3rd generation 11 inch with the m1 is so much faster and absolutely no hesitation about opening websites at all, unless I am trying to use a substandard Wi-Fi connection instead of the 5G.

I don’t own a Mac or PC. My M1 12.9” IPP is my go-to device. I typically upgrade every other cycle, so do not plan to upgrade to M2. If Apple surprises us with a 15” IPP, that would be an immediate buy for me.

Is it possible to upgrade from nothing?

I use a Windows laptop for work and plan on purchasing a 12.9 iPad Pro for personal/work use.

Here’s my response to those replying to my wishlist:
- I am aware that OLED isn’t coming anytime soon to the iPad, but supply chain analysts are predicting it will make it’s debut on future iPad Pros starting in at least 2024
- Apple has no excuse anymore to keep the cameras in the wrong place. You could argue that the Apple Pencil magnets would make it impossible to move the cameras to landscape, but Apple has figured out a way to shrink the True Depth camera system on the iPhone, with the Dynamic Island. Surely Apple can find a way to move the camera to the landscape orientation
- Thunderbolt 4 does allow for more accessories to be connected at once and has some improvements over TB3, even though the bandwidth is the same, but since the M2 Macs are still stuck with TB3, I do have to admit it’s unlikely to be upgraded on this year‘s iPads, although it would be nice
- Apple has increased the maximum amount of memory to 24GB with the M2 chips so it would make sense to give the iPad the option to be configured with more RAM
- You can’t make the argument that RAM upgrades and SSD upgrades have to be bundled together because Apple allows you to configure them separately on Apple Silicon Macs
- 128GB is not enough for an iPad Pro, and if 256GB models are going to be downgraded like the M2 Macs were (please Apple don’t do this), then they might as well start the iPad Pro at 512GB with the entry level price of $799 USD or $1099 USD for the 12.9” ($999 or $1399 here in Canada), which would also increase the value of the iPad Pros relative to cheaper iPads and motivate more customers to get the Pro instead, thus generating more revenue for Apple. Apple wants to make as much money as possible, and increasing the base storage of the iPad Pro would certainly help, plus it would make the prices of the higher tier models easier to stomach, therefore attracting more customers to the iPad Pro. The iPad Pro would sell like hotcakes and Apple would make a crapton of money

Higher revenue, sure. More profitable than their current status quo? I doubt it. Sometimes it’s much more profitable to sell fewer units at higher prices than to sell more units at lower prices.

I’d love to get 512GB entry level at the same 128GB pricing. However, considering their MacBooks with 512GB base start at $2K, I just don’t see that happening.

I’m on M1 iPad Pro so no plan to upgrade anyways. But even if I’m on my old 2018 iPad Pro, I’d still hold off until seeing how good M2 iPad Pro is in terms of performance before jumping the gun.
wise move. I *need* to have an iPad Pro, but refraining from getting M1 now, just to see if upgrades of M2 version will be negligible. most probably they will be molecular, so I'm ready to hit that refurb Apple store baby!

I love my 2018 12.9" Pro. That and the iPhone X are probably my favourite apple products ever.

I was quite tempted by the 2021 when they did the miniLED display - but after seeing it in person I held off. The slight increase in thickness and weight pushed it just over the edge for me.

I'm very curious to see the potentially 2022 M2 iPad Pros. Hope there's still something surprising in store, but not getting my hopes up. With Stage Manager working on my 2018, I'm less inclined to feel the need to upgrade, whereas before last week's announcement, I was 100% certain I would upgrade.

I was thinking I would upgrade to M2 iPad. But my new M2 MacBook air is almost making me think twice. With M2 air my 10.5 pro more than meets my current needs. However I really want to try the Apple pencil and magic keyboard.

So right now I’m undecided whether to keep my 10.5 pro till 2024 or upgrade now.

I'm probably going to do it. I made a huge mistake last year and bought a 16.9 IPP without cellular. We just went through a hurricane and I had to use my iPhone 14PMax. I just love the big screen and watching Youtube news videos on the iPhone was tiring.

I also have an IPP 2nd edition with cellular but the picture is not great. It looks yellowish compared to the newer one.

When the power is on I'm on my iMac 27 but I think I'll upgrade. I may keep all three of them and give the older one to my SIL.

I've got M1, it's got miniLED XDR display, it's got ProMotion. It plays back video great, it has the magic keyboard that is useful for getting some things done. Beyond that, M2, don't care. MagSafe would be nice to have as a convenience feature, but it doesn't really factor into decision making. I tried stage manager with the beta, really don't care for it. I don't do anything on the iPad that would make me even want to utilize it. iPad for me is more of an entertainment consumption device. What I'd really like is an iPad mini with miniLED or OLED and ProMotion. When that comes out, I'll pick that up.

I could've really utilized some of the more power features on the iPad back when I was in school, but those days are long gone.

My 2018 11” iPad Pro is still running strong, so…no. I won’t be upgrading to the M2 iPad Pros. At least not yet. My current iPad does everything I need including editing photos & 4k video on LumaFusion. Now if Apple releases a version of Final Cut that only runs on the M2 iPad Pros, that’s another story. But as of now, I have no plans to upgrade.

Perhaps. If they drop the M2 models and the new four-pin connector renders existing accessories obsolete, I might upgrade to the M1 once refurb stock hits (or grab a new one on sale), since I'm really not eager to replace my Magic Keyboard.

If they don't change the connector (or if it's backward compatible), then I'll probably look at an M2 next year.

I think this is the first time I will most likely not upgrade to the next IPP 2022 or 23 everything I use my current 2021 12.9 cellular, for I can tell doesn’t push it to its maximum amount if they do release pro applications like final cut to the IPP and it’s exclusive to the M2 I’ll think about it, but the fact that I will probably have to buy a new keyboard system a new tablet my battery life works with how I use it to this day still I guess only time will tell and when the details are released about this next IPP 12.9 I’m still not sure about upgrading to the iPhone 14 Pro Max from the 13 Pro Max. Have a great day. Hope this helps.

I don't think I will buy another iPad Pro model. I have a 2017 12.9" iPad Pro that still works fine and I have seen very little incentive to upgrade. Sure, the newer ones are a bit more compact with better screens but they also don't have a headphone jack which I find very convenient. TouchID vs FaceID doesn't make much of a difference for me.

But the real reason why I'm not interested is the slow pace of iPadOS improvement. Over all these years I don't feel it has grown in a particularly relevant way. iPadOS 13 already brought most of the good stuff: multitasking, Sidecar, mouse/keyboard/trackpad support etc. iPadOS 15 made multitasking a less awful user experience and while Universal Control is cool, it does not play nicely with Sidecar unless they have fixed something since I last tried it.

I've picked up a Samsung Galaxy Fold 4 for my phone recently and when unfolded, that little thing has better multitasking than the iPad Pro, supports a pen, can use Samsung Dex for basically what the Stage Manager w/ external display on M1 does and more. On hardware that is probably far less powerful than the M1. So apart from a bigger screen, what does the iPad Pro offer me?

If I wanted to stick with Apple, at this point I'd rather buy a Macbook Air M2 than an iPad Pro because it's a lot less limiting and overall a better user experience. Only thing I'd really lose is the Pencil support.
