4TB is pretty easy to fill with media if you don't want to or can't rely on internet for streaming.

Last time I went on a month-long vacation/family reunion to PH, I brought a laptop+4TB portable HDD which functioned as a mobile Plex server. That only contained a subset of the content on the 20TB NAS.
It is indeed, but at the cost of storage with Apple, a 4TB SSD is way cheaper (got my on Cyber Monday for $360), Apple charges an additional $1200 for 4TB of storage.... By the way I did the same thing for Plex with my M1 mini and a couple of SSDs (4TBs, 2TBs etc). But to be honest I could bring just the SSDs and copy to the iPad what I needed....

That trip was circa 2015/16. No external storage support yet. :p

But yeah, I wouldn’t bother paying Apple’s storage tax for 4TB either. Too rich for my blood. 1TB’s my limit. I believe for @Rafterman, price is not an issue.

I was originally planning on upgrading my 2020 iPad Pro to the M2 model
late to the thread, to be sure but my take on it is, that an M2 based iPad offers me very little and I see no reason to change over from my M1 iPad Pro that if I was honest with myself I use very little. I also have iPad mini and whil it doesn't have an M1, I use that a lot more.

My needs are content consumption so a faster processor means very little to me.

I'm still keeping my 2018 iPP. I'm happy that Apple brought Stage Manager to the 2018 model, and this iPad still runs smooth as butter with the workflow that I have. So no, I'm not planning on upgrading to the M2 unless they do a massive redesign.

2020 iPad Pro 11” here, got it day one and not planning on getting a new one until this processor somehow isn’t fast enough, or some crazy features come out. OLED, true thunderbolt functionality maybe, something like that.

In the meantime this thing is a beast still, handles anything I throw at it with ease.

Stargate Command
Unless there is a feature introduced nobody is talking about.
...editing photos & 4k video on LumaFusion. Now if Apple releases a version of Final Cut that only runs on the M2 iPad Pros, that’s another story.
...if they do release pro applications like final cut to the IPP and it’s exclusive to the M2 I’ll think about it...

Only two folks mentioned video editing at all; nobody remembering that the M2 also introduces the Media Engine to the low-end ASi SoC...!

I wana see what they announce as i currently dont have an Ipad. Right now the Budget model update (based off the rumors) seems the most likely, but boy do i miss having a nice 12.9 inch pro with a magic keyboard acting as a laptop!
Might have to save for that and the Iphone 14 Pro

Now that Stage Manager is available on older iPad Pros, has anyone else cancelled their upgrade plans? I was originally planning on upgrading my 2020 iPad Pro to the M2 model since I was upset that Stage Manager was exclusive to newer iPads, but now that it’s available on my iPad Pro, I’m going to wait until Apple either introduces OLED to the iPad Pro, my storage gets completely full (512GB), or I break my iPad in an unfortunate accident. Who else has cancelled their upgrade plans, and who is buying the M2 iPad Pro anyway? I want to hear your thoughts

Stage Manager without external display support, which is pretty much garbage.

I've wanted to use iPad as my primary computer ever since iPad OS 13, but never went for it because the OS just wasn't good enough in my eyes. With the release of iPadOS 16.1 being imminent, I am once again thinking about getting an iPad, but I'm concerned Memory Swap will not make it for launch. I can wait a little while longer for other core features such as proper external display support and Stage Manager, but without Memory Swap, I can't see myself do proper multitasking on iPad. I recently tested my workflow, which included Safari with a couple of tabs open, Outlook, MS Teams, Acrobat and Apple Music on a base 12.9 iPad Pro 2021 running iPadOS 15, and all apps especially Safari tabs had to constantly reload making it extremely difficult to enjoy the process and to be productive.

Surprise
I say no, but will have to wait and see. I have a 2018 and a 2021 11". My 2018 is my "bed" iPad as I cracked the screen on it a while ago. It still worked well and at night barely notice. However a couple of months ago it stopped being able to "fast" charge. I thought it was an iOS 16 beta bug, but it never started working right even after completely resetting it. It only seems to charge if I use an old USB-A charger with a A to C cable. So might be time to replace that. None of the rumored upgrades for the 11" sound that interesting to me though.

My 2017 has some screen delamination and the stage lights it causes drive me nuts, esp photo editing. So yeah, I'll probably get a new one.

But I'll still wait to see the specs vs maybe going with a different model.

M1 12.9” 256GB will absolutely not be upgrading. Full advantage of the M1 is not being taken even now with iPad Pro. Let alone the M2 that is coming.

Strange to even consider a M1>M2 upgrade or a 2020 6Gb iPP>M2. Save your money for later... iPads (and iPhone) are in the fortunate situation that CPU/GPU is not limiting its usability. That, my friends, is a great for customers so enjoy it while it lasts. RAM is another matter, especially for iPads, so next time I go for the config with most RAM.

The biggest issue is with batteries that are dead long before the device is unusable regarding CPU/GPU/RAM. Talk about planned obsolescence! Watching movies for 10h with half dimmed screen as benchmark is not good enough. Any demanding tasks on any device and battery life is 1/3 of the started "all day battery life". Ah, to have a workday of 3-4h instead of 10+h.

M1 to M2 seems pretty incremental. I only upgrade after multiple cycles of incremental improvements have built up into a worthy upgrade, but even then it still usually requires at least one substantial new feature as a catalyst to get me to upgrade. Not sure what that feature could be at the moment. I might be interested in a larger size.
But also Apple keeps taking away things I need. I’d love for Touch ID, a headphone port, and thick bezels to come back lol.

About the landscape camera, the real problem for me is that most stands don’t support portrait orientation. If the Magic Keyboard could optionally fit an iPad in portrait orientation, I wouldn’t care to have a landscape camera. That would actually be a better solution for me because I often look at and work on documents in portrait. Also I’m not photogenic, so I think the more elevated camera angle would help make me look better lol.

Do you mean the battery health getting worse over time? Yeah battery degradation is just a fact of physics and current technology, unfortunately. So I consider batteries as disposable parts. Thankfully battery replacements are much much much cheaper than a new iPP.

The Multiverse
With Stage Manager no longer a M1 exclusive feature, the main reason I will likely be upgrading to the M2 from my 2020 12.9" will be to get a cellular model this time. I'm also hoping the storage options will match the M2 Macbook Air and drop the 128GB.

my problem is now that i have a macbook pro and iphone with mini-led or oled, i don't really want another washed out lcd. i can continue limping along with my first gen ipp for that. if they'd just extended mini-led to the 11" i'd probably have bitten.

Doesn’t Apple provide kits now? Or is that only for iPhone?
Either way, even paying Apple to replace the battery is only about 1/10th to 1/20th the cost of a new iPP.
The iPad is not designed for battery changes. No easy bays for battery packs and no easy way to open the device. If Apple wanted user replaceable batteries, the iPad would look very different and much thicker. I wonder if induction could be used as an "easy add-on" battery technology so you clip on a battery pack covering the whole back. Probably not efficient enough and it will be a thick device.
