Useful thread here, thanks for everyone's contributions.

I have a very specific question about which app to use: I am hoping to use my iPad to access my PC desktop -- from within the same office (10 feet away) -- if possible, accessing via my wireless network and NOT through the internet (due to security concerns, medical info being viewed). Is this possible? Which remote app makes sense for this? Any help would be appreciated.

Anything using RDP, which is what Wyse uses.

I would highly recommend people NOT try and use RDP or VNC over the internet via port forwarding. You're asking for trouble in terms of security, especially with VNC. You're better off using Logmein Ignition if you want secured remote control.

I am using Jump and Desktop Connect. I prefer Jump for the mouse circle, it seems to give me more accurate placement of the cursor. But I keep Desktop Connect because it can wake my sleeping laptop. So I boot DC, wake the laptop. Then close DC and boot and connect with jump to do the work.

Not the most elegant solution, but until Jump can wake, I will do it this way.

really? could you elaborate more? if i use rdp port forwarded on my local network, am i risking security? im pretty sure its accessible from the outside world via the ip. it is pw protected with my computer's pw though

Could someone with Jump using VNC try the free Mocha VNC app and see if there's a noticeable difference in speed?

Obviously Jump has a load more features, but unless it's a lot faster I'm not sure it's going to be worth buying.

Didn't realize so many different RDP existed. A friend recommended logmein, and I'm happy with it. It accesses iMac, WHS and WINxx machines at home.

I got iteleport but reading here I am regretting it.

Can some of you guys explain to me the difference between vac and rdp?

Also who do th e iteleport instructions say that you turn off screen sharing? I use that all the time via mobile me?

Why Re these insecure can you elaborate? Doesn't mobleme use rdp? And what does logmein use instead to make it more secure?

I'm not sure that there are any known security vulnerabilities with RDP or most popular (current) VNC servers. However, opening ports in your network would allow someone to exploit those vulnerabilities if they do exist.

By the way, whereas Logmein requires you to install their agent app on each computer, Jump Desktop gives you the flexibility to use their agent app *or* to set up port forwarding without an agent running. I believe the only exception is OSX, where Jump hasn't released an agent app yet.

After using both, I find that there's very little reason to spend the extra $10 on Logmein.

Thanks guys for the replies.

So why is iteleport using vcn then?

In term of vulnerabilities via open ports, surely the host vnc software polices this port right?

Though you can push VNC over an SSH tunnel, or buy a commercial version of VNC that supports it, no version of VNC that is free that I've ever seen has had encrypted traffic. So I personally wouldn't dare use it over a WAN link. RDP is encrypted, however I really don't trust it.

Get Real VNC (at least personal edition) + Real VNC viewer. Supports 128 bit AES encryption, been using it for years.

TEAMVIEWER HD IS OUT! It's both FREE and AWESOME.

Even though I paid for:

-iTeleport
-Wyse PocketCloud
-Jump Desktop

...the ID # tracked centrally by TeamViewer servers and the 2-sided interaction that lets me remote control family PCs (as well as being on both Mac and Windows) make TeamViewer the winner for me.

Does that interface well with say iteleport, or at all for that matter, excuse the ignorance.

Also are apple using rdp with encryption for back to my Mac?

Anyone else notice that Jump is on sale for $5 this weekend? I've been using the free Teamviewer HD but can't pass up the opportunity to try Jump at such a low price.

I want to try one of these so bad but I can't install anything on my work computer without having administrator privileges. I work for a large company so I am sure they're pretty strict with installing 3rd party programs like these. Oh well, would have been nice to have.

Audio with a patched termserv.dll

I have Win7 Home Premium (x64). I have patched termsrv.dll with Concurrent RDP Patcher. I am looking for something better than Mocha Remote Desktop Lite.

On the jumpdesktop website, in one of their FAQs they state:

This only applies to users who have modified their copy of Windows Home, Home Premium or Starter to allow Remote Desktop: Not being able to stream audio is a known limitation with the modifications available on the net. If you come across a solution for this, please contact support.

Does this mean I will not have audio support? If so, would that be the case from any RDP client or, Jump specifically.

(I sent a note to their support asking the question... I thought others here may already know)

EDIT:
I did try Jump Desktop ... No Audio made it through. Looks like the problem is on the PC end. The screen looked great in 1680 x 1050 and sceen updates were smooth. I could shrink the desktop to see everything, or I could fill the iPad with the widow I was concerned about.

I need a little bit of help. I'm using the free RDP app to access my HTPC when it's not used to watch movies through the attached front projector. Is there a way to anchor the screen, by which I mean stop it from moving around when I try to scroll or swipe? Thanks in advance.

I downloaded Teamviewer HD, which is pretty nice, actually...

But I have a couple questions..

#1 -- for my iPad to connect, I have to know the randomly generated log-in and password. How the heck am I going to be at work, and log into my computer at home if I have to know what the numbers are from my home computer?

#2 -- Do I ALWAYS have to have the Teamviewer software running on my home computer for this to work?

Perhaps I am a little too new to this "remote desktop" scene!!

I read this full thread earlier and decided to purchase download Jump Desktop to be able to login to my new iMac from my iPad.

I have just downloaded onto the PC and the exe file doesn't run and I am having a bad feeling that I have just wasted £11.99 on an app that only works with Windows.

Someone please tell me I am wrong.

Ok, it seems for Macs we need to manually configure Jump Desktop. Crap!!

iTeleport.

After screwing around with Jump Desktop and Teamviewer, I settled on iTeleport.

Easy to Install, easy to use and have fullnremote access.

Wyse Pocketcloud will stream audio. The little mouse clicks and everything.
