I'm using LogMeIn as well. The interface and momentum scrolling is brilliantly designed. I use it mostly for my mobile consulting business, to access client machines as well as my own office Mac while I'm away. My only complaint is that it was FAR too expensive. If I didn't need it for business, there's no way I would have shelled out $40 for it.

iTap released an overhaul for RDP client. I have been testing it, and it is quite nice. Jump still seems slightly faster, but the interface for iTap just keeps getting better and better. The icon is pretty hideous though.

Weighing my options

I do not use remote desktop with my iPad YET, but I came in search of a decent one. I don't want to spend 40$ on one because it's just for home use so far. My question is, what is the best all-round remote desktop app, that is free or relatively close.

Edit:
Judging by all the good things said about Jump, I think I'll go with that, but does anyone know of any promo's coming up for it?

Is there a primer or anything out there that can explain how all this works?

This seems like a great idea - I have a PC at work I would love to access, and an iMac at home I would love to access.

I would need it to be 3G capable, because where I would use it most (in the field) I obviously won't have WiFi and won't be connected to "my" network.

Does anybody have any suggestions for my setup?

Splashtop Remote desktop - with video

We just launched a remote desktop app - Splashtop Remote - that's pretty different from other iPad apps folks have talked about so far. The app is optimized for video and audio, so you can get a fully interactive experience - down to playing casual games with minimal lag. Unlike RDP apps, Splashtop Remote requires a software component to be installed on the PC, which at this point only works with Windows - Mac version on the way.

Sorry for a "shameless plug", but I think this is relevant to the thread.

wtf how? if this works, amazing. going to try it.

note : tested on a very fast network sitting close to router with ipad, computer is on ethernet, same local area network. this is a setup ive optimized for very fast jump performance.

okay i am VERY impressed with the video performance. it is actually smooth and very good quality. definitely better than jumps choppy video. the audio sync is not there though, which sucks. if it had audio sync perfect itd be really great. still great potential but a lot of work needed:

-why cant i rotate the display? if anything, turn the default the other way, as when flat on a desk with apple case the screen is sloping downwards away from me, not nice. but ive just realized that this is nicer for on leg/jean use, lol didnt realize this before.

-desperately needs a mouse circle a la jump. frustrating to try and use mouse accurately.

-change two finger scroll so its not reversed!!!! i dont like this backwards setup.

-keyboard needs more layers so all the controls are there, like i cant alt-tab right now.

-performance aside from video is not as good as jump. pretty good, but definitely not as fast. if the mouse circle was there itd be muchhhh more enjoyable.

basically copy everything from jump and add the great video performance :) and sync sound to video.

i do like the little keyboard key and its location, thats nice.

Slapshot remote desktop is now on sale for 99cents http://appshopper.com/productivity/splashtop-remote-desktop

I want to pick it up but my only aim is to use it with an XP PC which is hooked up to some surveillance cameras in my workplace. I really doubt I'll be able to get any ipad/iphone apps compatible with that surveillance cams software, but since it runs under windows, I figured using such an app will be useful for me. But what I'm not sure about is the performance under XP. Does it work well enough? I dont care bout the missing sound there. Just somewhat smooth video feed of my PC will be more than good enough.

EDIT: ok. Just read the devs post here. there will be mac support soon so I'm gonna get this. Even if it doesnt work with my old PC, it'll atleast work with the mac and I'll get my 99cents worth out of it (someday) :)

I use "team viewer" the free version is just as good if not better than logmein. The apps for the iPhone and iPad are free as well. As far as running it on your desktop or laptop, you can intll the software, or jut run it when needed. Nice encryption on it as well.

I just got around to installing Splashtop and setting it up with Windows 7 inside VirtualBox.

And I definitely approve! Easy to setup, works very quickly, and video plays amazingly smoothly! Hell, even when I'm in the non-video mode, the video still plays acceptably! A bit of stuttering, but pretty good. Of course, in video mode, it plays much smoother, and is definitely watchable.

As a remote desktop client otherwise, it's pretty good. Responsive to my taps, keyboard is easy to pull up and hide, etc. My only complaints are the gestures - they kind of suck. Some are fine (tap for clicks, two-finger scrolling for scrolling, three fingers for scrolling the display, tap-and-drag for dragging), but some suck (touch and hold for right click isn't very responsive and consistent, and needs work - maybe just make it a simple two-finger tap? - and the gesture to turn on and off video mode is a bit strange, but sort of makes sense in context).

And of course it doesn't work with OS X, which is a pretty big negative.

Otherwise, an amazing deal at the $0.99 I bought it for!

SplashTop looks very promising, however no Mac support ?

If a Mac version is ever released I'd definitely give it a shot over LogMeIn.

Gotta bump this. Has anyone had experience using Jump Desktop with their new Mac Client? I don't really need the software for business, but would like to be able to have access to my computer while on the go, and since I can use this on both my iPad and iPhone, I don't feel $20 is asking too much. I just want to see how it's working out for others who will be using a similar setup.

There's also an app called TeamViewer, but I heard that if you use it too much, it will restrict the time you can use it.

What I like about it is that it's very easy to setup the server part of it on either MAC or Windows. Once I gain access, and would install LogmeIn and access the remote PC with it, to avoid getting usage restrictions.

Does anyone have more experience with it?

Support for native RDP found on Windows 2008 and 2010?

Which iOS apps support the native RDP and related authentication protocols found on Windows Server 2008 and 2010, and XP Pro, Vista Pro+ and Windows 7 Pro+? (Pro+ means Professional and higher versions).

Thanks for the info on logmein! Gonna make the jump to LogMeIn instead of Jump since they'll be the same price. I know $10 isn't really that much, but that's a couple digital records on Amazon or several digital or a couple printed comics for me. I'm trying to save wherever I can :)

-EDIT: I just realized that the free version of logmein is a little limited. I'm gonna play with it for a bit and hope I don't regret throwing away an hour of wages lol. I was hoping this was something I could install on my moms computer to help her out when any of her kids aren't around to help.

Does anyone know a remote desktop app that runs on both the iPhone & iPad that can stream audio from a Mac source? The only one I've found so far is "Remote HD", which is OK but has a somewhat ackward interface.

After reading Nineohtoo's last post, I have checked the specs of the Jump Desktop app, and it seems amazing. And according to the AppStore, it will do Full Audio Streaming over RDP (Windows only).
It says it supports RDP and VNC servers. Definitely worth checking.

Thanks, Nineohtoo for the useful info.

Hello, I've been using LogMeIn Ignition for several months already. Unless you subscribe, you can't do File Transfers and any management task their Pro version of subscribe services has (only during the first 15-day trial available).

Overall, it has worked great for me, and I have used other means to transfer data from/to the client computer, such as Dropbox or email. it's greatness is being able to access it remotely without making any firewall customizations.

I've been looking for a good RDP/VNC (hardly use VNC) solution that works on all Windows Servers. I'm definitely going to check Jump Desktop.
Please submit your feedback based on your experience with it. Thanks!

Jump Desktop seems like a good alternative

Yea, but I have a MAC. :) I'm looking for remote desktop apps that streams audio from a MAC source.
