Sigh. I wish.

It doesn't make a lot of sense for a tech company to release a product that is going to get buried in the weekend news cycle. Friday afternoons are usually when companies release disappointing financial results or embarrassing press releases.

Yes - but keep in mind that they're releasing their quarterly results on Monday... so they want to get this out before then. It could be preemptive (to offset disappointing results, they show their new products), or disruptive (boost a good report even further just ahead of the Windows 7 launch).

Either way... I can't wait until the store comes back up. I'm ordering a Mini no matter what. :)

I will say - on days of product releases, the store usually goes down for about an hour beforehand.

But...that usually occurs at 7am EST on a Tuesday.

agreed.. It's been down for 45 minutes now..But such an odd, odd time.

Enough to drive you insane, I know....

We should all stage some kind of sit-in at Apple stores and let Steve know we are pissed.

Mind F'ed ya say lol

I went to my local Apple store today to take one last look at the current iMac 24". They lady at the store actually told me to wait 2 weeks as a redesigned one is coming out soon. Pretty nice of her. She told me that she's not really supposed to say anything but she wanted to look out for me. How odd is that!

She also recommended I get the Microsoft Suite for the $145 instead of the iWorks if all my stuff is on Word and Excel already on my PC. She added that coming from a PC environment it would be much easier for me to get the Microsoft instead. No one recommended that to me before, but it makes a lot of sense to me now.

I can definitely suffer for 2 more weeks of slow computer hell with my 7 year old Dell for the new iMac. Man they're nice, seeing them again today. I can't wait!

A lady told you that at the Apple Store? Apple Store employees know nothing about new product launches, and they aren't allowed to speculate.

I'm usually very patient, but I have to admit, I'm jonesing too. I've sat out the last several updates and I'm hoping this one is strong enough to spur me into replacing my early-2006 iMac...

Interesting...Hopefully she wasn't just pulling your tail so she wouldn't have to do her job and actually sell things to you. Like what aaquib said, the store reps aren't suppose to know anything. My friend who works for an Apple Store out here hasn't heard anything and he's a full-time worker as well. So I am hopeful that something will come up soon...If not, I know the 24" is calling my name already and I may go ahead and decide to purchase my first Apple Desktop.

The store reps DO NOT KNOW ANYTHING! The only thing they can/do know is when there is a shipment in the storage room with a notice not to open or touch it until XX/XX. And I dont think they get stuff weeks in advance... Any Apple store person around that can verify any of this????

True, they are the last to know unless they are a real enthusiast.
Best place to look for solid rumors are near the factorys they are being produced and they sure arent here in California like the old days of Macs. China or Taiwan.

It may be because this is a highly educated area of the US that people have been coming into their store mentioning that they "heard" that the new iMac was coming out soon, and if enough people mentioned it to her, maybe she thought it to be true, too? I was very surprised when she mentioned that yes, I should wait but just 2 weeks for the new version. I DID mention to her that on MacRumors forum members were thinking a new one may come out soon so I planned to wait for it. That's when she unloaded her "Yes, you're right. I'm telling people to wait. No one is buying an iMac right now."

Steve...? That YOU??!! Hey, listen we can't wait anymore. Also what's up with you having to ask a sales rep anything? Just hit the intercom and have Phil fill you in. Are you concentrating on the tablet and so disconnected from day to day business? Anyhow, hope you're feeling good, and please drop something soon before your fans go crazy.

I bought the 24" refurb last night. It's scheduled to be delivered Wednesday. I figure if Apple comes out with something Tuesday, then I can return the iMac unopened for full refund. And if they don't come out with anything, I keep it :)

Apple employees are not supposed to post on MR, making this request pretty hard.

That isn't true; we could post to MR and according to colleagues that are still there, no new rules have changed. Sorry to spoil the fun. Of course, violating the NDA was not allowed regardless of the site/forum.

To the above posters, although I never worked at an Apple Store, I was part of a team that "shadowed" them for a day to see what the retail experience was developing into... and no, they don't know what product launch was coming out ahead of time, just like most Apple employees everywhere. However, I do know many care about the customer... since they aren't commission based, it is reasonable that an employee did feel the need to tell you they also expect releases shortly.

I had a tip from my brothers wife, or rather a friend of my brothers wife, who also has a friend, that my brother´s wife don´t know that well, but who is supposed to know someone in Apple, who told her that the new Imac´s are going to be announced some time soon, if not very soon, then at least not too long away.

When I worked there a few years ago, The rule was most definitely no contact on any mac forums.

My buddy in one of Apple's sub-stores - he says they have their own intranet based on rumours :p

The chances are working for Apple - they umm ... like Apple stuff so not too surprising a leap is that they follow things like AI or MR - main thing to realise is that they are just people - who will gossip :D

Besides - who wants 1000 customers bitching the next week because they want the new iMac instead :p
