They won't let me take it home. They said they are the only store having this problem and they won't let me go home until it is unbricked. BOOOOOO

Texas, unfortunately.
OK... so I was the first in line at the ATT store... they unboxed my 16g white iPhone... went through the steps and it was taking forever to "unbrick" (activate) my phone. After about 20 mins the manager came over and said he just received email about "technical problems" and it said to send customers home with iPhone 3G to activate! ... Well.. im home.... trying to activate... and it is having the same problems! Stuck on "ACCESSING iTUNES STORE".... GREAT! Now I'm stuck without a phone for God knows how long!

UPDATE: Just got an error (-4).... retried... now it says: "iPhone Activations Are UNAVAILABLE At This Time"!!!!!! This is horrible.... Way to go APPLE!

same thing happened to me...
I was first in line...
Sat for 20 minutes at the store with the "waiting for itunes" crap...
then after I got the phone ready, it wont get service. Apparently, as of 8:45, only 1 phone has been successfully activated in Houston...

weak

no, the activation is the only thing that is failing on such a large scale. AT&T's system has been able to handle the load. Apparently Apple's servers were not plentiful enough to satisfy all the activation requests.

It's ironic that apple failed instead of AT&T.

That's what I understand too.. AT&T did the majority of their stuff right. iTunes is the problem. AT&T is not without fault, because their employees seemed lost as to what to do, but the majority of the fault lies with Mr. Jobs and company.
And you expected this to work because...? This happened last year, it was pretty much a guarantee it was going to happen again.

Be patient. Go do something else for a few hours.

My old sim is already unregistered. So I am now totally without a phone and expecting calls. Unless I can use the sim from the new iPhone.

Thanks. I'm in Connecticut. I'm going home for an hour then I'll go back. This is sooooo frustrating.

Everyone deserves what they get!

I think this whole activation, exclusive partner, contract thingie is the dumbest thing Apple has ever come up with!

I'd rather buy an iPhone for $500 and then pick a plan of my choice and get off waaaay cheaper than with this bloated ATT, O2, T-Mobile, Vodafone what ever crap...

Will import mine from France or Belgium or Jailbreak it!

I was 10th in line at the Boise store and when I picked up my 16 White, the manager that was helping me said " your not eligible for upgrade yet" I said no problem. She takes my phone rings it up and says "Hmm you got the 299 price" then she tried to activate it and told me I would have to do it at home.... NO problem with that as I got the UPGRADE price!! NICE:D

Apparently it's AT&T fault, because because of them phones Locked however Apple should have been prepared to overload.

I too went to the ATT store and they too told me to go home and now that I am trying it just says accessing itunes store.... it says "We could not complete your itunes store requests. The network connection timed out. Make sure your network settings are correct and your network connection is active, then try again." so i have to keep plugging it back in, anyone else having this problem? My internet works just fine as does the normal itunes store...

chill out..

chill out americans! go read a book, have a coffee... talk to someone! all good things come to those who wait! Think yourself lucky, at least you dont have to pay probably double the cost to update our ipod touches like we will have to in the UK... I am expecting it to be around £12 - about $24...

It's not just a matter of impatience, or not having other things to do. I don't have a phone because the AT&T side of it unregistered my old sim. I can't activate my 3G...so I have no phone.

How is the fact that iTunes is overloaded AT&T's fault?

as I said iPhone Locked because of AT&T. I don't know how they came up with this idea to brick them, why it just can't be as with a regular phone ... activate freaking sim card not an Phone itself.
Plus why do thy locked it??? if you can't leave the store without sighing contract ... you know what I mean

I thought apple was supposed to be better than this!

I bought my first mac when i bought my first iphone, largely because i was sick of microsoft not working. Apple was supposed to be sooo friggin great and only implemented things when they were ready. WTF! In line for 2 hours. Been home for an hour, still no iphone, old or new! This sucks.

iTunes activation servers go down, iPhone 3G customers being sent home unactivated

"In a repeat of last year's problems, it looks like the insane demand for the iPhone 3G has taken its toll on Apple's iTunes activation servers -- that's a picture of iTunes locking up in the Chicago AT&T flagship earlier this morning. We're hearing that the servers are now definitely down after being intermittently active for the past few hours, and that customers are either being turned away or sent home from both Apple and AT&T stores to activate at home using iTunes. That's especially interesting since it suggests that AT&T was insisting on in-store activation to thwart unlockers, but for right now the real news is that lots of eager iPhone 3G buyers are stuck with two useless phones, since upgrading from a first-gen unit disables the SIM. Ouch. We'll keep you updated.

Update: Apple has confirmed to us that activation is down, and that customers are being asked to take the phone home and activate via iTunes later.

Here in the Netherlands, they released the 3G nationally at 9:30am. I had reservated a 16gig white iphone, they first tried to activate it at T-mobile's registration form (T-mobile Activation System; TAS).
At 9:31 all the t-mobile-servers were down. They are still down, and they are registrating everyone manually by fax. But even then, you still need to complete your registration online in Itunes...(which is down worldwide I think)
The complete IPhone 3G event in Holland is one big mess, they're sold-out everywere, and still a handfull of people has one,

including me, thank God...

My iPhone can now make calls...

I was sent home like everyone else and I've been sitting here watching the iTunes store time out during activation. Strangely, the last time it timed out, I ejected the iPhone only to see icons on the screen! It had been activated but without iTunes ever acknowledging that! Now I just need to sync, but it still tries to access the iTunes store even though it is activated now.

Same here! My iTunes is continuing to "spin" or either give me the -9838 error, however i just received a text and a phone call on my new iphone 3g.

My phone is fully update but it cannot access itunes so all the apps I had purchased(or downloaded for free) last night are not on my iphone. I tried downloading AIM from my iphone but it says that I already have AIM and if I would like to download it again.

I was going to download it again to see what happens, but now that I see I'm not the only one with this problem I guess I'll give it a rest.

I remember last year their was a similar problem, just out of curiosity does anyone remember how long that took?

My friend has an unlocked iphone and he has already had a lot of these features / games before. Yesterday he downloaded the 2.0 for his iphone provided by Mac Rumors, and his phone has been fully functional. He downloaded monkey ball from his computer and synced it with 0 problems.

I think its funny how all these people unlock their iphones and run a risk voiding there warranty, but so far I've had more problems with my iphone following the rules. My friend on the other hand has had 0 problems and a lot of these features since december.

I love apple products, but I definitely think they're slacking. Bright side is that there is still nothing like apple products out there.

I'm confused as to why I can still buy songs from iTunes yet not get phone activation. Don't they have dynamic server allocation? Seems like that could've helped alleviate this problem.
