I have a simpler and better method. If you get motion sickness, don't look at an iPhone or iPad while riding in a car. It's about the scenery. Look out the window, keep your eye on the horizon, and you're golden. And by all means, NEVER look at your iPhone or iPad while driving; Motion sickness will be the least of your problems.

One of the few things Apple has done that’s helpful lately, I’ve found it really helps when playing games, watching movies, or posting here while driving.

Ok but what about for people who spend a lot of time traveling and lose out on work productivity as a result? This is a game changer.

What a ridiculous comment.

I spend 5 hours a week in an Uber to and from clients. I’d love to be able to work on my phone during that time, but I can’t…until now.

Given I work ~65 hours a week, getting back 5 hours of productivity is meaningful.

Doesn’t help you?

The lengths companies will go to get children addicted to their products.
Disgraceful.
Go touch grass. Not every new feature is some nefarious conspiracy. Grown adults can have this problem too and sometimes they need to or want to use the phone in the car or train. I’ve never had this problem even as a kid but I’m not going to btch about an accessibility feature just because I don’t need it.

This is almost as idiotic as accusing Apple of intentionally enabling cheaters because they added new privacy features.

What I’ve learned from this article and mostly some of the comments is that it sounds like Apple’s next feature should really be a “sarcasm sensor” for those born without one. 😬😜

I'm conflicted here. At first that sounds logical, but who are these people traveling to work, but who have someone to drive them? A work buddy maybe? And where are they driving that takes so long that the rider needs to catch up on work? If it takes that many hours, they should fly instead. Then work at the hotel, instead of puking on an expensive iPad Pro!

I get motion sickness very easily when even using the phone for a short period in the car. I tried this out during the beta release of iOS 18 and was very surprised at how effective it was.
Whatever black magic is tricking my brain and inner ear into not making me want to pass out, it's working.

If you’ve ever been in a road trip, you eventually get tired of seeing the same scenery. And it’s in the middle of nowhere, so you’ll be seeing the same hill and trees for a while.

Having regularly experienced motion sickness in the back of cars, etc. this has tremendously helped keep me from getting nauseous. Wild times we live in

Some of the people here need to watch Bluey and learn how to interact better with others and react to things better.
As someone with ADHD and who knows how many other letters, I think it's funny how I can see the intended humour in the post you are replying to, and see the nature of your post, but all the posts that then follow on I quickly cannot actually tell if they are supporting you, or the original post you were responding to. So rather than trying to quip in myself, I'll just say this.

Go Bluey! Woot! Aussie voices being heard around the world.

I look forward to trying this as a passenger since I’ve suffered from motion sickness my whole life to the point I am not able to stay in the back seat of a car if the ride is longer than 10 mins. Forget about using the phone or reading a book. I literally cannot text or even read an email for longer than a few seconds if I am in a moving car or a bus (doesn’t happen on trains or planes thankfully).

This feature is meant to be for everyone and not just the kids in cars/buses. Motion sickness truly is a horrible thing to live with, but I guess you do get used to it. So if it works at least for some of us, it’s a good thing.

For some of us it takes less than a minute to get sick in a car. Here is a scenario for you, you get in a car (could be a friend, family member or taxi) and you have to send a text to someone, it’s urgent. Some of us cannot even finish typing up the text (shorter than this reply) before getting nausea in a moving car. Just because it doesn’t happen to you, doesn’t mean others don’t have such issues.

I absolutely love this feature. I can't use my phone for more than 30 seconds or so and start to get nauseous in the car normally. I tested it out on a trip last weekend and was able to use my phone for an hour in the car (as a passenger) with no issue.

I've had a few issues though. Sometimes it is very slow to turn on and add the dots even after it switches my focus to driving. Also, sometimes it doesn't turn off for quite a while after getting out of the car.

So I just turned in while riding the bus. The dots basically vector contrary to the force applied on occupant. So I imagine it’s a visual cue to say to your brain “no you’re not imagining feeling centrifugal force it’s there; chill out.”

That's valid for some. I remember being on vacation and stopping in a tourist info in Oklahoma. I told nice elderly lady there that we were headed for Amarillo, and asked what there was to see on the way. Her answer was "A whole lotta nothing." She was not wrong. Fortunately for me, I don't get motion sickness. And the wife only noticed it when we were driving through the hilly & twisty roads in Tuscany. Oops, I forgot the fishing trip from Hell. We both got queasy, in a Boston Whaler during a 6 foot swell.

But I still believe that the worst thing you can do when feeling ill is to look down. You should always fix your sights on a stationary object as far in the distance as possible, like the horizon, to restore the balance that's disturbed.

Maybe write the text before you get in the car? How did you make that urgent text before you had a cellphone?

But I feel for you. I have a sister in law not quite that severe, but not good at all. Ever puke in someone else's car?

I remember being excited looking at license plates from different states and counting animals when I was young. Car rides were always fun to me.

I think those days are over for today’s generations. It’s all Angry Birds and Tap Tap Revenge now a days, or whatever the kids are playing.
I remember being bored to absolute tears long before the end of a 12 hour day in the back of a car traversing the Western Australian desert with nothing better to do than watch the power poles getting thinner and thinner as we got further from civilisation. If I’d had this feature and it worked, I’d have happily spent those travel days reading an ebook.

Need these “motion cues” in ski goggles to avoid motion sickness when skiing in white out conditions! And maybe an artificial horizon so as not to lose track of which way is up… 🤔
