I think it’s a reasonable expectation for an iPhone to last for more than a year and a half, otherwise they would not sell much if at all. If it did indeed fail without user error, then it is not good quality. You will see an iPhone 6s in the wild and you’ll see a 2006 Toyota - the warranty was over a long time ago.
conspicuous consumption. People keep buying iPhones to show off they can afford it. Even when the top of the line samsung phones cost more and are better most don't want to be caught dead with a android phone.

Yeah right. I was trying to work out how common that is. That must be quite a saving. Is that the case in many states?
It is, but not many states have no sales tax. I think it's 4 in the lower 48 states that don't pay any sales tax: Oregon, Montana, Delaware, New Hampshire. Others have low sales tax like 2.9% in Colorado, and another 10 or so are in the 4% range. However, many people buy from states neighboring these low/no tax states as well.

It looks similar to Australia in the EU, where an iPhone 16 Pro is $300 USD or more with today's exchange rates (iPhone 16 Pro $999 vs 1199-1219€ in Germany, France, Spain), since I think those also includes tax vs the US price not including tax. For example, for those of us who by in states with no sales tax, $300 more than covers the cost of AppleCare+ for 2 years ($140/yr), if we choose to buy it, and that has theft and loss coverage and other perks.

I'm personally happy with the 1 year standard warranty if it means significant savings on the initial purchase price, as long as it continues to be the case that iPhones or Apple Watches don't usually fail in the first couple years. Even a few generations of the Apple Watch I've used for swimming regularly and showering with, and haven't had them fail.

Apple is highly rated in consumer surveys and every company should have customers who believe their products are objectively best, such that they are repeat customers. There don't seem to be any systemic quality issues with the iphone 15. The OP got unlucky and doubled-down because they didn't have AC+ and the warranty ran out.
