I completely wiped out my 4 before I installed 5, and installed the back up. The whole process took about half an hour or so.

On a typical day I unplug my phone at 0745. And plug it back in around 0100 the next morning. I usually had been in the red for an hour or so. Since OS 5, with almost all features running, except photo stream, my phone has only dwindled down to 32% at its lowest.

I am extremely satisfied with batt performance, especially after reading the above posts.

Ok so I was having some real major batter drain earlier but now that I have stopped playing music/podcasts and it has been fantastic. So at least for me the iPod app has a screw lose that is draining it big time. Damn shame really :(

Looks like I am one of the unlucky ones with this update. Will try do a total reset tonight and start over fresh to see if there is some legacy app/issue to is hammering it.
let me know how this works for you. I may do the same if it seems to solve your issues.

I've noticed a bit of a decrease in battery life... but it could be because I've been playing with it a little more. I'm gonna watch how it goes the next few days and make adjustments.

To those with bad battery life, have you tried disabling the "Ping" service under Settings>General>Restrictions?

My 3GS went from 100% when I went to bed to 4% in the morning !

Even with wi-fi, BT and Location services turned off I can still see the percentage going down every time I turn it on.

I had a JB iOS4 before the upgrade to iOS 5 but that should't cause any trouble should it?

My battery life was horrendous when I have the 2 widgets on notification bar (Stocks and Weather) turned on.

Turned them off and the battery life is awesome.
I have iCloud turned on for everything except backup.

- iPhone 4 16GB.

On my iPod Touch it has drastically improved. I lightly use it during the day and always charge it at night. So my iPod charged overnight I took it off the charger checked mail, check Facebook and Google+, and iMessaged my friend for 5 min and it only went down 7%! Its greatly improved by the way wifi oo, push mail on, all iCloud stuff is off, and about 6 notifications that are on. (location service on for find my iPod)

Battery Lots All Charge in Half a Day

Me too!

Was fully charged today at 7.30am, but by noon was down to just 8% and I've had to dig out my back-up charger.

I noticed it dropped quickly yesterday too - the first day afer I updated, but then at a slower pace, finally shutting down due to no power left around 6.30pm.

Now normally I use about 50% of a full charge over this same timeframe.

Something in iOS 5 must being impacting the battery life of the iPhone 4.

A colleague suggested turning off as many location services as I could which I've done, but the battery life was fine even with these turned on, so i'm not sure how that will help.

Funny, my wife's iPhone loses a little more battery life, and I don't notice a difference at all. Both iPhone 4's.

But you know what, Android phones lose more battery life. I carry a spare battery pack, Kensington Spare Battery Pack. Smaller than an Android device's battery, yet charges/powers the iPhone twice before dying.

I have a theory that imessage is causing battery issues. It has to keep a constant internet connection at all times. Just something to think about

I think I am one of the unlucky ones as well with battery life.

Yesterday my phone completely died on my by 8pm, and that doesn't happen unless I am on it 90% of the time tweeting, taking pictures, etc... Yesterday was not this case.

Toady, I have uplugged for about an hour and I dropped 12%.
Weird thing is the usage times:
Usage: 52 min
Standby: 58 mni

I was on the train for a good 30 min and didn't really use it so I don't get the usage time?

Maybe iMessage is a factor because I used it yesterday. I have had an iOS 5 beta for about 2 months now and didn't experience any battery issues before. I also didn't use iMessage since not many people I knew had it.

I don't have iCloud on - just the find my iPhone. I have push, etc. Nothing changed from when I was on iOS 4 or even the iOS 5 beta.
I installed iOS 5 and then restored from backup.

Does anybody have any idea how I can try to improve the battery life? What has worked?

I think the battery loss is primarily due to all of us messing with the phone more than normal. Testing things, turning things on or off, running apps and seeing how things changed, etc.

My battery life seems about the same, maybe 1% worse. I don't have any before or after percentage/time tests though. :)

I think one of the biggest changes that I am overly thrilled about is the animation bug is fixed. My phone felt so sluggish and was stuttering bad with 4.3.5. It's very smooth now, not one hiccup.

That's what I've found over the years as well.... you don't realize how much you're checking out new features and then you're wondering why your battery life all of a sudden has diminished. Once the newness wears off your battery life should come back.

Definitely not the case for me. I was at work all day yesterday so I wasn't playing with anything.

I was pretty sure Ping was disabled prior to the upgrade, but someone on Twitter suggested re-disabling Ping (Settings/General/Restrictions/Ping).

Following an older post somewhere, I did a quick network reset as well as well as dialling back some of the default stuff that was enabled for Notifications (do I really need weather, for example).

Something to note for some people. Location based reminders will drain the battery.

Also if you do have location services on. Go to settings > location services > system services > turn setting time zone off. That seems to have constantly been on for me. Also scroll to the bottom and select status bar icon on. So you know when these services are being used. It seems Apple doesn't want you to know due to the fact it's off by default.

iPhone 4 charged to 100% last night. Removed charger. Powered off for the night (not standby). Powered back on at 3:30AM. Its 10:25AM and its down to 70%.

One phone call. Light web surfing. And that's about it.

Not so happy with the battery life. Apparently I missed the magical cutoff with AT&T and have no idea when my 4S is coming. Unable to track, but AT&T says the order is still pending. Wonderful.

I thought my battery life had greatly improved. Went to bed on 100% and woke up on 100%. Push notifications all turned on. Being a social network addict i get alot. Location turned on but only for findmyiphone.

My battery life has gone to crap since iOS5. I let my phone run down and completely turn off by itself last night about 8pm. Fully charged it and got up at 6:20am and now at 12noon I am down to 12%.

I talked on the phone for a total of 30 minutes in those 5.5hrs. Been on FB a total of 5 min, I have turned off ping, all notifications except Phone, Messages, Calendar, CNN, FB and ESPN. Even the weather and stock widgets are off. I used to get great battery life on my phone where I could go a whole day of using the phone a lot and still have 20% left and I am a heavy user.

No idea what else I can turn off but I have a lot of stuff off and not to happy about that.

I think i read some folks are just going to wipe it clean and start over? I guess I might go down that path however I have never done that. Is anyone willing to share what the best process is for this?

Is anyone else suffering from diminished battery life?

remember that the battery has to cycle charge around 5-6 times to get near its peak. your battery is new

saying that, make sure you dont have too much working

I always turn off push for example
