Turn off iCloud backup. Turn everything else on. Worked for me. :)

If that is the solution, and it may very well be, why is this the case? It is only supposed to backup to iCloud when on WiFi, correct? I had WiFi off all day yesterday since I was at work. Shouldn't the backup have been "sleeping" since WiFi was disabled?

remember that the battery has to cycle charge around 5-6 times to get near its peak. your battery is new

saying that, make sure you dont have too much working

I always turn off push for example

That's on a new phone NOT a new OS. And if those of us with the problem had push on before, there should NOT be a noticeable difference. Sorry, I see NO need to have an iPhone with push turned off.

Having horrendous issues on 3GS(4S coming today). Went to bed with it at 99% and woke up with it at 45% 6 hours later. That's pretty bad for it being in standby. Usually there is only at max a 5% drop overnight. Everything the same cept IOS5.

Hmmm interesting...I just did as you said, charging phone now. I should know this evening how this worked out. Since I work from home 100% of the time my phone is always on wifi so I guess this makes sense it could drain the battery.

I might be wrong but I really can't see it making a difference. It only automatically backs up when the phone is plugged in and connected to wifi. It might drain if you manually make it backup.

iPhone 4 iOS 5 battery DEAD

Upgraded to iOS 5 yesterday, full charge last night and dead by 5pm today, lasted about 10 hours but did not use it at all, no calls, no messages, nothing! Wait for a patch I guess and turn all functionality off apart from the phone until then and see if that helps.

65% to 0% just in standby

Yesterday night i left my 3gs in the car - battery was 65% - and went to a disco :D
When i got back to the car i found the iPhone dead...! I firstly thought it was time to replace it, but when at home i plugged it in and was ok. Apparently it just run out of battery.
Doing nothing...

My battery life is also fine. Try deleting and then adding your email profiles/settings. That usually does it for me.

Ok for me

I upgraded my 2 year old 3GS to iOS5 on Wednesday. I have noticed no difference in battery life.

I used the phone heavily yesterday (several calls, lots of texts and emails, and a lot of web browsing - mostly via wifi). I ended the day with 35% left.

Today, I got up at 6am. Have used it lightly (just some push email, notifications, some texts -- no phone calls), and at 11:50am it is at 89%.

I don't have anything "turned off". Three "push" email accounts, a few others I check manually, wifi on, bluetooth on, location services on, notifications on, etc...

Since I got my first iPhone, 'Ask to Join Networks' in Wi-Fi settings is usually the culprit as far as battery life goes - so I always have it turned off. Something in the upgrade turned it back on again, and battery life was dire. But now I've turned it back off again, and it's back to it's usual self.

I have everything else turned on (iCloud, push everything etc.), except for 'back up to the cloud'. I haven't tried that yet.

Ok, I re-calibrated battery overnight and have been using the phone at pre-iOS 5 excitement levels. It's draining at the same, if not a slower rate than normal.

I also disabled the "Ping" service and Stock Widget in the notification center, so that could be making a difference.

I did the same. I also turned off iCloud backup and returned it to computer-based backups. Lastly, I stopped using the GroupMe app. Now, after over 2 hours off the charger, I am still at 96%. So whether it was just one of the steps or some combination of some or all of them, battery life seems to be just fine now.

I agree and it didn't have any impact. It seems on 3G only battery life is normal and like pre iOS5. Now back home and it has dropped 10% in 20 minutes doing nothing on my phone. Guess I will live with it unless something else is uncovered as I know for a fact it didn't behave this way before iOS5.

My 3GS went from 100% when I went to bed to 4% in the morning !

Even with wi-fi, BT and Location services turned off I can still see the percentage going down every time I turn it on.

The two biggest late-night drains to battery life would be:

1. iTunes Wi-Fi Sync

2. iCloud Sync

The backup files alone are huuuuuuuge and would take several hours overnight.

No, these only work automatically when plugged in. You can make them work manually but they only operate by themselves when connected to power. It shouldn't be impacting on battery life.

Had the same problems with my battery life as well as music not playin. Did a restore and seems to have fixed it for me. IP4 now in standby for last 2 hrs and still @ 100% .... Music also sorted .... Funny enough my iPad was acting all weird with da music but not da battery. When I restored the IP4 .... Music on the iPad seems to also have been sorted. Unlikely it's related. Probably just got lucky.

Guess I will try a restore as my phone just ran out of battery for the 2nd time today.

Fine on my end. 16GB iP4 on ATT. Been running iOS 5 since the GM was released nearly two weeks ago. In my school there is little to no cellular service due to the roof being constructed out of metal so the phone is constantly searching for signal. iOS 4 by 4PM would have the device down to 80-84%[with nothing but stand by] while iOS 5 by 4PM has the battery showing 92%-97%.

I suppose the software is more efficient in iOS 5 with the radio searching and tower drop off issues. Either way I'm happy with the free updated performance.

When you all do restores you just use your last backup correct? Or do you do the factory restore then apply your backup? Sorry I have not ever had to restore my ip4 since I have owned it since May2010.
