No, these only work automatically when plugged in. You can make them work manually but they only operate by themselves when connected to power. It shouldn't be impacting on battery life.

yes...under settings>iCloud>Backup, it says...'automatically back up your camera roll, accounts, documents, and settings when this iPhone is plugged in, locked, and connected to Wi-Fi.'

I did notice that you can manually select what it backs up...in my case there are so many apps (many I don't use, and others I use for fun but don't care about) that I have cut the backup size by 2/3

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 5_0 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/534.46 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.1 Mobile/9A334 Safari/7534.48.3)

I feel like I'm going back to the dark ages to get reasonable battery life. Notifications: off. Push: off. Fetch: every hour. Next to go will be iCloud (since I really don't need it on all the time, but rather to update stuff maybe once a month, or maybe I'm "doing it wrong".)

Did you restore from backup? Like how did you get all your contacts, apps, etc back?

I did a backup right before I started the restore and everything is just like before except battery life is back to what it was before the upgrade.

I'm still getting through a full day on a single charge like before, with moderate use throughout the day. Can't ask for more than that, really. The more things an OS does, the more quickly a battery gets drained.

Using iPhone 4 here and my battery is completely fine.

Also I don't have OCD with battery life :) hope that helps.

What are you talking about.

100% at bedtime 4% in the morning is not acceptable for a phone that has everything turned off and is not used during that period.

It's a fault not OCD on the user's part. Most people aren't complaining about 1% or 2% more drain than usual. This is serious and makes the phone useless.

Mine was even worse last night. In the morning it wouldn't even come on at all.

I'm also suffering battery drain; not terrible, but noticeable.

I tried to reset settings, as I know sometimes this helps, but unlike previous iPhones, the 4S did something weird. When it booted back up, it wanted completely setting up again, even though I'd only reset settings. I chose the option to restore backup from iTunes, and it asked me to connect to iTunes - except doing so did nothing. I then chose setup as new, and I was then able to get into the phone, which wasn't a new setup at all as everything from the previous restore was still there. Does anyone know how to definitively reset settings?

I've tried resetting network settings, as this is something that can also cause drain (to do with Microsoft Exchange accounts?) but it hasn't helped.

Under Settings-> Mail,Contacts,Calendars delete your accounts, iCloud included, and restart your iPhone. Then add them again. I have a 3GS and this greatly improved my battery life. I also felt that it was running a bit hot, which was also fixed. Before I would get around half a day on a charge, now I am at 65% having been using it all day with notifications on.
I know this solution has been mentioned before but just wanted to say this worked for me too.

I haven't notice too much of a difference, seem to drain slightly faster then before. I do have iCloud turned off though. I usually have to recharge my phone once a day of every other day anyways.

I think mine is eating my battery. I turned of photo stream, notifications. I never do push for email I just go in and check it every so often since I don't use email for business. and I keep fb not in push because I feel like we already spend to much time on fb so I rather check it every so often and not have my phone going off every 5 seconds and me checking it..Idk what else,I really don't want to turn of photo stream though looks like a neat thing to have..

I think I have the battery issue pinpointed (for me anyway). It was all of the apps running in the background.
Double click home button, hold down any app icon on the springboard until they all wiggle, then turn them off one by one.
Maybe, before the upgrade, apps running in the background were in a paused or sleep state, while under iOS5 they are left running full on or something. Having to constantly, manually shut down background apps is a PITA, but my battery life is back to normal.
-edit- and yes, I have everything "on"

Something to note for some people. Location based reminders will drain the battery.

Also if you do have location services on. Go to settings > location services > system services > turn setting time zone off. That seems to have constantly been on for me. Also scroll to the bottom and select status bar icon on. So you know when these services are being used. It seems Apple doesn't want you to know due to the fact it's off by default.

I really did not have any complaints with my battery life, however, I did take the advice from this post and where I would usually make it home with about 32% tonight I made it back home and had 42% percent. And I happen to watch a number of YouTube vids on 3G on the CNN debates, tonight.

Thanks for the extra battery life, guy!

Had 100% battery charge in the morning, left iPad at home on accident came home and 22% remaining from 0 usage only background alerts/update while in sleep....

This was pretty pathetic!! even turned off many location services and had no 3g on only wifi

My suggestion for a solution to the battery drain problem is this (worked for me as I went from +50% battery use in 24 hours to 20% use in 24 hours, latter being the same as with IOS 4.3.5)

1. Sync phone running IOS5 to create a backup
2. Restore phone as new
3. Restore the phone from backup created in step 1

Have a hunch that certain configurations of IOS4 will when upgraded to IOS5 result in the increased battery use when the IOS4 settings backed up by the upgrade process are restored to IOS5.

I know I posted earlier in the thread about significantly reduced battery life. I did change a few things, but nothing drastic. Another sync, and my battery life is back to normal...maybe even a bit better. I still have all services running. I'm not sure what the cause was...but happy to be back to normal

My battery life is completely unacceptable after the update to iOS 5. Today I've been using it the same as any other day and I've run the battery down to near 0% twice. It only lasted from 0730-0930 and I didn't even make a call! I wasn't even on a wifi network! WTF Apple?

Maybe if I buy a new 4S it will be better. Is that what battery shenanigans are supposed to make us think? KHAAANNNN!

This can't be right - or else it's quite impressive. I've got literally every single app on my phone in that springboard on my 4S, but my battery life is hardly terrible. I think that's just a list of apps with a saved active state - removing them just makes them do the app equivalent of a reboot.
