Overall first impressions of the Dell U2720Q that came in today are very positive... However, I have had a few instances throughout the day where the display will randomly go black and my M1 MBP will have gone to sleep / locked itself. Like I briefly disconnected the computer, but I didn't. Only lasts about one second. Both sides of the connection are secure. Anyone else experiencing anything like this with their M1 Mac and external monitor?
When I've had problems like this in the past, it came down to the cable. I assume you're using the USB-C to C that came with the display?

I have two of these monitors and one of the monitor used to do this. I was on call with dell support for an hour to troubleshoot this issue and was determined that it could be a cable issue. They overnighted me a new cable which fixed the problem. I suggest contacting dell for new cable or buying a quality cable on amazon.

Using 2x CalDigit Thunderbolt 3 Type-C Cable - Passive 40Gbps / 100W Charging / 5A / 20V (0.8 Meter Passive Cable) - 1 display to TS3+ and 2nd from TS3+ to M1 - with no issues. Make sure it’s a passive cable if you’re using a dock.

2m length active cables only worked if directly connected from display to M1 - tested Apple’s T3 Pro cable and Caldigit T3 active 40Gbps/100W charging

I found the OEM USB-C cable that Dell supplied was too stiff to route with my desk setup.

I was so impressed with the M1 MBA, I ordered a M1 Mini to replace my Late 2015 iMac 5k. Wont have the Mini for another few weeks.

Naturally, I purchased an LG 5K monitor 27MD5KL-B. Looks great. BUT how the hell do I turn this thing off without pulling out the power cable?

When hooked to my M1 MBA, the screen goes white when the MBA sleeps. When I disconnect the cable, the screen goes white and stays white (probably have given it 20+ minutes).

I hope I don't have this same problems with the M1 Mini.

Seen one support thread that said to factory reset the monitor using the LG app from the App Store. Well that app says its not compatible with my monitor.

Any ideas?

UPDATE: I don't know why I didn't think of this before, but I got my Intel MBP that I was giving back to the job and installed the LG software on that. It worked. I reset factory settings and so far I think its working as expected.

Which input format do you get from your M1 to Dell U2720Q?

I have a Dell U2720Q and cannot get RGB as input from my Mac Mini M1. I have tried HDMI to HDMI, USB-C to USB-C, TB3 to TB3 and USB-C to DP, doesn’t matter which cable I try. Input color format is still YPbPr.

Resolution and scaling no issues, it is running at 60Hz and picture is OK, however I am sure it would look better with RGB. I thought this issue was mainly with HDMI to HDMI and that USB-C to USB-C would be OK, but no.

Unbelievable Apple does not have a fix/setting for this.

Any ideas how to fix this? I am aware about the “ruby patch-edid.rb” script but that seems to create other issues with resolution being stuck at 1080p.

What software are you using to create desktops snapped into place ?

I have a Mini M1 with LG49" UW 5120*1440. Needed to use switchresx to get that res.
LG On screen control does not work and that might be a dealbreaker as I can not splitt the screen in 3 or more alternatives to act as physical different screens with all the OS possibilities that gives.

T

I also bought, RMA'd then sold for a profit the dell u3818dw as I wanted to match it to the 16".

Any issues with it those 2 devices interacting? Do you charge at 96W or 100W when connected via USB-C?

I sold the dell as my table was too small and I ended up moving my head around. Perhaps that's why?

I'm hoping for a larger than 27" screen with the 2022 redesigned iMac.

Software i am currently using is magnet, works well so far for arranging desktops.

On the issue of the Dell 3818 working with macOS , mine does, and someone asked me what firmware my Dell is on, I wasn’t sure and checked , i am on the old M3B103 firmware, This version works well with the Mac, the newer version M3B106 DOES NOT PLAY WELL WITH MAC, i almost updated and thankfully hit a toxin of people with issues, and dell saying they wont be fixing it.

So just a warning, i am fortunate i purchased mine with that version, and not one today that may have shipped with the newer version, as its not backwards compatible either.

Any opinions on 4k curved monitors in the 34" 36" range? For an M1 Mini. I am not a gamer and do not need screaming refresh, just real estate and lots of it.

You have to uncheck "Show profiles for this display only" to see other display profiles. Check below screenshot.

Thanks but it is not about the color profile but the signal between M1 and monitor where I can not get RGB mode (in Dell OSD menu only YPbPr works if I switch to RGB everything becomes pink). This is not a new issue but I had hoped it would be different with USC C vs HDMI cable. More about it here:

Unfortunately the patch does not work on M1 Macs

That's nearly an eight year old article - March 2013.

What exactly is the problem you're seeking to solve? If it's just text being a bit blurry on external monitor, have you tried turning off font smoothing?

Thanks. Maybe I should hold on to my iMac 27 5k and use that as a thunderbolt monitor once Apple releases m1 drivers for it. I’m afraid I’m too spoiled with the 5k. I can also pair the keyboard and trackpad with the new mbp.
Is it possible to use the iMac as a Target display ?

I thought the M1 does not allow that anymore.

I'd love to use my iMacs as a display for my M1 Mini.....
My older Intel Macs can do the Target display using TB2....

Running a 27" 4K at 2560x1440 is the best of both worlds.

As you say WQHD is the most comfortable size, and with the extra pixels it looks retina.

I have used a P2715Q this way for a long time at the office (remember those?) and I'm not sure I could tell the difference between it and a 27" 5K display such as the iMac.

^^ This right here. For my work MacBook, I connect to the LG 27UL-850W (27" 4K @ 2560x1440 scaled), and the size and scaling is pretty good for the average desk distance. Ironically, I do have my 5K iMac right next to the LG display, so side-by-side is pretty easy :) Definitely the 5K iMac looks better. Some of it has to do with the glass front vs. matte on the LG.

Is it possible to use the iMac as a Target display ?

I thought the M1 does not allow that anymore.

None of the 4K or 5K iMacs support Target Display Mode.

I have the same hard decision to make and need help.
I not sure what is the right display for me. 27 inch have the most options but 24 would be the perfect size for me. if i make a compromise and choose the 27 inch even after this cant decide which usb c monitor.

viewsonic, dell or benq are my favorites. i dont want spend over 600.

Several years ago I switched from dual 27” to single 43” with the LG 43UD79-B 43" Ultra HD 4K IPS Monitor. Very happy and not go back to anything smaller. It works great with my M1 MBP over USB-C.
I’m using the CalDigit TS3 hub which I’m also happy with. But on two occasions, upon unplugging the usb cable from the computer it instantly powers off and reboots.

I have the same CalDigit TS3 hub, but I haven't seen your problem when I unplug the cable.

I know the article is old (there are new articles as well) but the problem remains. I want the best possible output to my screen with the full color spectrum 0-255 which is RGB digital USB C to USB C. Not a digital to analog conversation as is the case now. I cannot believe there is no choice in OSX settings to choose yourself. Connect to Windows and zero issues. Apple should have fixed this a long time ago.

Are you looking for 3840x2160 or <something bigger>x2160?

In the first category there exists the Dell S3221QS with a VA panel.

Unfortunately this is a M1 issue, my MacBook Pro 16 inch that's still here works fine with USB-C connection, but the new M1 MBP will cause the screen to go black, and won't work until I pull the MacBook from my dock and open and close the lid. It happens about 3 times a day.

Hopefully Apple will fix this issue with the 11.1 update.

Mmmm, my one turns pink and green when I change it to YPbPr, but fine in RGB, what USB-C cable are you using? Is it a 10 Gbit one? I used a 5 Gbit cable before and I remember it caused issues, though it wasn't YPbPr issue you described.

Any recommendations that are comparable to my Apple 27" LED display which is sadly not compatible with the new M1's?

I really love its rich blacks, low light bleed and glossy screen which seem extinct in today's product lines, the LG Ultrafine 4k which is recommended by Apple seems to have horrible light bleed which is a deal breaker for me and i've yet to come across a product description that matches my requirements.

I have tried both the USB C cable that came with the monitor (Type C gen 2) and an apple thunderbolt 3 cable
