Hello everyone. I'm using AdGuard on my iPhone. I'm really tired however of videos automatically playing on both the NYPost and NY DailyNews mobile websites. I have 'auto-play video previews' in the Motion settings disabled. I would really appreciate any suggestions. This drives me crazy.
StopTheMadness is a must for Safari on both MacOS and iOS. You can do many things with it including prevent AMP pages, autoplay, force iOS media controls on videos, etc. Be careful not to turn too much because it can brake some pages.

I’m currently browsing in the App Store and the top safari extensions include ad blockers. Figured I’d go for one. Am attaching two photos of the most high recommended. Hoping to get an opinion or two here.

admittedly I hate websites that have a bunch of ads, mainly news sites it seems.

Also I’ll occasionally stream movies from 123Movies or Soap2Day (RIP PutLocker) when I can’t find a movie on one of the major streaming platforms. These sites usually have PopUp Ads that open up a few extra tabs and would love for that to stop.

Am debating between 1. Unicorn or 2. adBlocker
Wipr doesn’t block the "Fast Access to Google / Get the new Google Widget / Get the App" tab at the bottom of every Google search. Adguard does.

Would use Wipr otherwise.

How has it not worked? Just wondering cause I also paid for Wipr and am wanting to get the most use out of it.

So far it’s completely hidden any ads from Google or YouTube (via safari). MacRumors is the only site I still get ads, as mentioned before.

That is strange, mine just doesn’t block any ads. I have Wipr extra enabled too. Maybe a re install but honestly for YouTube, I just use the brave browser. But I do like safari for handoff features. Gonna give the re-install a go.

I ask only cause I wanna milk all the value it’s worth considering it’s a paid app.

MacRumors and YT are probably my most visited sites so. Not seeing unskipabble ads (or any ads really) before and after YouTube videos has been so nice.

Have you opened the that and run the update? Maybe that would work.

Wipr working here, it blocks ads on YouTube on Safari with the free update for the extra setting and if set it to run in the background and you leave it in memory it updates on its own and works great. It blocks 'Fast access to Google' for me, but it was updated on the 13th of December so maybe that update fixed that in extras as only app updates can update extras for any blockers thanks to the way Apple set that up, normal adblocking updates in wipr and other apps work as they should in the background.

No obviously when you say it blocks ads on YouTube you mean via the safari web browser right? Just don’t want anyone confused thinking ads are being blocked within the YouTube app.

I have no idea what fast access via Google is. I just use Google.com

You cannot block ads on any app, including YouTube app; that’s why when we say Wipr works flawlesly for us blocking ads, we are implicitly asuming it is on Safari. Many of us just use YT on Safari because of privacy reasons, and with tab groups, having one group just for YouTube videos, it is easier than ever.

I figured. I guess I’m just insatiably curious as to how others use their iPhone. I never thought of devoting a tab group for just YouTube though. I personally just save all my interested videos in Watch Later.

The youtube app itself is tricky but I can say that most ads in apps can be blocked by using any of the common methods. The kicker is that you need to use the DNS(VPN Trick) method in the app for it to work in apps. In adguard, you have to turn on the DNS Protection before you will see filtering in apps. Of course, ads will still come in from time to time but I can tell you personally that it is quite better in several apps in comparison with no filtering at all. A simple Safari adblocker alone will not suffice though.

Nah, appreciate the explanation, but I am not a fan of using VPNs, I don’t trust the companies behind.
With my current usage, with Wipr I have more than enough on Safari. Regarding apps, I usually tend to buy the ones that don’t have ads

Yeah, glad you brought it up again. Wipr has been great for me on iOS. So great I bought it in my Mac last night.

To each their own bud. There will always have to be that level of trust but what I can see, the "VPN" method that adblockers use is not actually your device connecting to a tunneling service, it is all "on device." Just that they have to work a certain way after apple changed the policy several years ago.

I have gone back and forth with these adblockers. Between these and a few extensions, I find random websites always get blocked or significantly slowed down. So far the only one I've found that consistently works is AdGuard. It's very frustrating as I could use the same blockers and extensions in Firefox and have zero problems but I want to use Safari's features.

I also noticed that Wipr for Mac was not blocking a single ad when I first installed it for testing. Then I tried opening the app itself and found the Test Page option from the Help menu. The Test Page confirmed that Wipr wasn't "enabled" and I worked through the suggestions until the Test Page showed that Wipr was working properly. Never had this issue with 1Blocker, so I wasn't expecting it, but Wipr seems to require a little extra configuration to get it up and running.

Just went through the steps, sure enough Wipr is working well on my Mac as well. Very impressed with this app. Not having seen any ads for weeks on my iPhone and now my Mac.

what a wonderful life.

Yes that’s why I said in safari. Glad it’s working for you. Happy holidays b

Just bought Wipr as Ghostery was giving me problems with some pages (and google results)

I also bought Vinegar a few days ago, it converts YouTube videos to html, giving back controls and such, and in the meantime it also strips away YouTube ads. You just feel a microsecond of no audio when the ads are supposed to start then the video goes on again

@HappyDude20 hi mate! How's it going with Wipr? I currently am an Android user, and I have always been. On Android I use Kiwi Browser that natively supports Chome extensions and alternatively Firefox Nightly that supports Firefox extensions (even if setting them up is a little tricky).

My must-have extensions are uBlock Origin and Poper Blocker. uBlock can block all the standard ADS and can bypass almost every anti-adblock system (adios Nano Adblocker and Nano Defender). Poper Blocker can block all those pesky overlays that haunt websites like fm*vies, 123mo*ies etc (or CB01, their italian equivalent, if you wanna check it out). These extensions are free and need pretty much no adjustmesnts.

I have sent a couple of emails to the dev of Wipr asking him if his extension was able to give me a web browsing experience comparable to the one that I currently have. I can call it desktop-like, since I use the same extensions on my desktop PC. No ADS, No overlays, no almost nothing. If I recall correctly he said that Wipr is not and will never be able to correctly get rid of the overlays on those websites, like Poper BLocker does.

What's your feedback about this? How's your web browsing experience? Have you found an extensions combo that matches those needs?

It might sound silly but to me this is one of the biggest issues that prevent me from getting an iPhone -.-"

I bought a lifetime license to Adguard for Mac (The systemwide app) a while ago, but I've switched now to the free Adguard Safari extension which I actually think is better.

The systemwide paid app isn't open source, appears to be buggy and cause issues with apple's protect mail activity and iCloud Private Relay as well as other apps. If you don't need blocking outside of a web browser I can't see why you would use the system wide app over the excellent open source free version.

I posted this on reddit and am getting downvoted for it, but in all honesty legitimately, is anyone else in here concerned at all with Adguard (Particularly the systemwide app) being developed by Russians?

We are in unprecedented times for the modern era, and it's clear that the biggest threat to many western people from Russia is likely to be cyber attacks. There has been talk for a while about Adguard's Russian origin, and while I personally love the software itself and can't find anything else as good as it for Safari, I think burying our heads in the sand and pretending there is no risk here isn't helpful.

From my understanding, even though the company moved it's headquarters to Cyprus for the strong EU privacy laws, many of the developers are still in Russia, and it's not a big leap to imagine what may happen.

For people who know more about cyber security than I do (Which I'm sure is a lot of people) do any of you use Adguard? Is it able to be trusted at the moment? From my limited understanding here, it seems the adguard extensions may be a lot more trustworthy than the systemwide blocking app as they are at least open source.

I use it currently, have no issues or complaints. I would not worry too much. If the company did anything bad, they would get blacklisted by the EU.

Also, one thing to note here, there are adguard hosted filters but most filter subscriptions are actually 3rd party(Easylist, Fanboy, ex)
