Thanks for the detailed steps! I’ll try it out when I get my new smart plug! :D
The other thing that is nice about the 2 shortcuts, is you can schedule a time to run the shortcut to turn on the charger to start charging. I am going to start scheduling my charging while I sleep at 6:00am. That way, the phone is fully charged by the time I wake up.

Do you do night shifts? Sleeping at 6am?

So is there a reason why you charge it to 85% instead of 80%?

Other people tell me “you don’t need to use a smart plug because Apple does optimised battery charging”…. But that only delays charging to 100%. I’ve got my 13 PM for 2 weeks and that still hasn’t activated.

I go to sleep at around 10pm and wake around 8am. So I can set it up so that when I am ready to go to sleep, I connect the phone to charger and it starts charging at 6am. I figured I wanted the extra 5%, so I picked 85%. I also have setup so that if the phone reaches 20% it would start charging. I am covered either way.

I am going to start turning on low power mode when I charge my phone at night. That way by morning, when I start using the phone, there will be little battery used, hopefully 0%. So when the charging finishes and the charger is turned off, the phone will be in standby using low power mode.

With the Automation shortcuts, don’t you get a prompt to “respond” to your smart plug app when your phone reaches 85% if it’s sleeping?
I tried this but apparently when the phone is locked, it can’t run the automation with the external app

There is an option toggle in the automation to run it silently and in the background.

I have noticed that after my 13 Pro Max finishes charging and goes into standby, that it consumes very closet 0% battery while in standby. I was experimenting with turning on low power mode after charging finished, hence the yellow in the battery health graph. From 2:30am to 8:00am the battery looks like it drained pretty close to 0%. I noticed this last time I had charged overnight. In my case, I use a HomeKit smart plug and have a automation set up to start charging when my phone drops to 20% or start charging at 6:00am. Once charging has competed, the charger is turned off. I don't let the phone sit on the active charging.

Ok, so just got my shiny new 13 Pro Max today. I will be keeping the phone for the next 5 years so have to be careful about battery.

After reading through this thread I think the best approach is to use my old Apple 5w brick and charge between 20-80%.

Is it ok to use an old cable (not the usb-c that came with the 13) with the 5w brick?

I don’t use the USB-C to lightning cable, I use the old USB to lightning cable.

You'll be fine with the old cables. The 5w brick has a USB-A port, so you wouldn't be able to use the USB-C cable with it anyway, short of buying an adapter.

But, five years is a long time to try to stretch out the original battery. They're consumable; it started deteriorating as soon as you turned the phone on. If Apple rates their batteries as maintaining 80% health after 500 charge cycles, then you'd have to only go through like 1/4th of a charge cycle per day to stretch your battery out for the whole five years.

Why buy a car and then barely drive it so you never have to replace the tires? Just use your phone however works best for you and know that somewhere down the line you'll have to replace the battery, imo.

So I’m good to use the old 5w brick and old usbA cable to charge my new 13 pro max between 20-80%.

And that’s probably the optimum way to charge the battery?

Yeah, that's probably optimum. I still maintain that charging that way is not going to make such a difference that your battery will last for years more than it would if you used only wireless or fast charging, but if you really want to do everything you can to keep that OG battery going, then yeah.

Another thing that people have forgotten over the years is that 5W bricks were (relatively and roughly) equivalent to the 20W chargers provided today. It's a pretty simple principle, but the smaller the battery, the less power that is required to charge it at a given speed. That being said, charging speed doesn't matter quite as much as the number of cycles that you put the battery through. There will be very little difference in battery longevity if you charge at 5W vs. 20W, particularly if other variables (such as heat) are controlled. I think that wireless charging is the worst thing that you can do for a battery health wise--it creates huge amounts of heat for the power that you are getting. Longer charging times at higher heat is invariably going to be worse than longer charging times at lower heat.

Hi.
Just getting a smart plug home kit.
How do I do the automation to start charging at 5 am and disables when it reaches 85 % or starts when it’s below 30%.

What smart plug do you use? I am using a TP-Link smart plug, and the automation shortcut only works when the phone is unlocked :( so now I just have it to time to charge to around 85%.

I have never worried about battery before. Just used to charge [usually overnight with a 5w charger] as and when needed.
However, with my launch day 13PM Ive been placing my phone on the magsafe charger when it gets to around 20%, and within less then 2 hours it charges to around 80-85%, which is when I remove it. Nothing else. At the moment I'm still on 100% but I'll see if it actually makes a difference to battery health after a year or so......
I do not constantly 'battery watch'. I do not use any apps to monitor health or any automations etc. Just enjoy the handset.

Everyone says they'll keep tech like phones for 5 years. I say it all the time.
In reality, after 2 years I tend to upgrade again! lol

I use the Wemo smart plug. Works great, even with the display off.

I was considering at the tp-link smart plug because of its low price. It looks like it is IFTTT compatible. I passed it by for that reason.

People just love to waste lifetime in the preorder and shipping threads to celebrate their insightful consumerism.

I also use the Wemo plug, but for the past month, I just charge it to 100% and have the charger shut off. I really wish the apple optimization would kick in and slowly charge it after 80% or hold but it does not do that.
