For pure FCPX, K4000 is a very very bad choice at the very beginning. And yes, RX580 can easily make FCPX few times faster.

Quick question on this, I'm new to the whole Mac Pro thing (My last workstation was a PowerMac G5)

This isn't a real Mac Pro anyway it's an HP Z800 running High Sierra but for ease of explanation lets just assume it's a Mac Pro

I've been doing FCPX work on my 2012 MBP for two years now (my projects aren't huge or complex, but they are numerous, upgraded to the workstation simply for more HDD space)

It seems...

Faster. On the MBP. It's an Ivy Bridge 3612(?) with an Nvidia GT650M, compared to this Z800 which is twin X5675 Xeons and (currently) a Quadro K4000

The workstation should kick the laptops ass, no? I don't think it does. Maybe it does? I haven't timed a render yet, I just set it and walk away. Maybe I should.

ProRes or H264?

The issue is, a RX580 can easily pull way more than 100W from the 8pin. If you only feed it by a single mini 6pin. Your Mac Pro will shut itself down as soon as you stress the GPU. There is a shutdown protection to avoid damage. The mini 6pin only rated up to 75W. Even though it can practically deliver up to ~120W (before the self protection kicks in), but there is no way it can deliver something like 150W.

And since you have 2x mini 6pin output, if you join them together to feed the 8pin. Then 75+75=150 is perfectly fit (8pin is rated up to 150W).

As I said, if you can't find any dual mini 6pin cable with reasonable price. You can go for dual female 6pin to 8pin. I tried Amazon, and I got this result within a minute.

https://www.amazon.com/GutsParker-P...&sr=8-1-fkmr2&keywords=dual+mini+6pin+to+8pin

You may search harder for a lower price cable. But if that's pretty much the cheapest you can get, than I will prefer to buy this one.

So everyone convinced me that a 580 is the way to go right now for video editing.
This video in particular was well convincing that CUDA means nothing now that METAL is supported by Adobe.

I was curious that the 580 is rated to take up to 225W, has anyone experienced shut downs using only a dual 6 to 8 pin solution like this moddiy one, which provides only 150W?

The slot will also provide 75W, you forgot to calculate that.

Should work. Anyway, they are just really cables. As long as you have the connectors, you can make the required cable by yourself.

Upgrade to 10.13.6 this morning , my RX580 8 GB no longer support 4.4.4 @ 60Hz via Display-

port adapter to HDMI (Club 3D CAC 1080 DisplayPort 1.4 to HDMI 2.0 HDR)

Apple downgrade the RX580 with the new update , now I only have 4.4.4 @ 30Hz .

Since 10.13.6 AMD RX580 8GB;

no longer support 4.4.4 @60 Hz

no longer support HDMI Ultra Deep Color

Thanks Apple .

Try SwitchResX yet?

After 10.13.6 update, my RX580 automatically revert to 3840x1080 8bit 60Hz output, but I can re-select back to 3840x1080 HiDPI 10bit 144Hz without any trouble. (I did that via ResXtreme)

That’s the reason, MBP has QuickSync.

If you editing / exporting with ProRes 422, your “Mac Pro” will crush the MBP.

Never heard of QuickSync, this is interesting...

So, due to many reasons, one being power consumption...

Unless I move to ProRes, I might be better off selling up and grabbing an iMac with a later gen i7?

Or you can wait for 10.14 and get a RX580. The hardware decoding / encoding should be available in 10.14 for cMP.

I tried with SwitchResX and ResXtrem 60Hz @ 4k HiDpi is no longer available since 10.13.6.

After update, 10.13.6 , AMD RX580 8GB no longer support 4k @60Hz :

Seem Apple downgraded AMD RX580 8GB @ 60Hz :

Your display is showing up as an 8k display, rendering as 2160p?

It's not just 4k you seem to have lost 60Hz refresh on. It's also plugged in via an adapter (my french isn't... existant)?

Right , I lost 60Hz ,

I can have only 30 Hz @ 4k via an DisplayPort adapter to HDMI (Club 3D CAC 1080 DisplayPort 1.4 to HDMI 2.0 HDR) while before the update I had 60 Hz @ 4k.

I use this adapter because it's the only way I found to resolve ''black screen'' and ''flicker screen'' issus on my 43'' LG monitor , same issu with my new LG 65" (Oled Tv).

Back to 10.13.5 ,as you can see I have now 4k @60 Hz :

Edit : To have 4.4.4 resolution, I have to enable "Ultra Deep Color " on my 43" monitor or my oled tv, but since 10.13.6 the new AMD drivers no longer support this function; I do not understand this downgrade but on the other hand this is not very surprising from Apple (eg. RX570).

Wow, this one cable solution is gonna take 3 weeks to arrive from china.

Can I use two mini 6 to 6 cables instead?

Did you try this previously suggested soft that worked for another user? Try it without your adapter?

So if you plug the display in directly, aside from the issues, do the 60Hz options and 4:4:4 colour come back? I'd still like to know why your display reports as 8k physical resolution, when it's a 4k panel.
