Best graphics card for 2010 Mac Pro that is supported out of box

HD 7950 or HD 7970 or R9 280 or R9 280X are all Metal Supported and can be EFI flashed to show the bootscreen at bootup.

Personally, I recommend the Sapphire Dual-X 3gb HD 7970 ( I have a flashed one ! ) or the MSI R9 280 X

EFI flashing is not hard just has a steep learning curve but most of us in the Mac Pro forum have mastered it.

Mojave requires a METAL supported GPU and BootROM upgrade. You can't download or install it officially without the METAL supported GPU.

Read the first post of the thread to know all the details MP5,1: What you have to do to upgrade to Mojave (BootROM upgrade instructions thread), pay attention with the requirements and read all the notes.

My friend i believe i have done the most difficult work up up to now (24 hours to turn off file vault ! ) , since i have given any detail for what i have in my hands .
i am waiting for 1-2-3 ... specific things to do so this 1 week drama find it's end .
so it would be very helpful to tell me what's the next step in order to avoid getting lost to translation of so many details .... thanks . you can ask me everything you want for my equipment !

Please read the post, everything is already there and I'm not going to write it again here.

If you RX 580 is not working correctly, you have to find what's wrong, like not using the correct power cable (dual mini-PCIe 6-pin to PCIe 8-pin) for example. You can't use both cards while trying to upgrade the BootROM.

Never remove any PCIe card while the Mac Pro is powered, MP5,1 PCIe slots are not hot-swappable and you will probably damage something.

Do a clean install of High Sierra with an empty disk with your GT 120, power off your Mac Pro, then install just your RX 580 and check if it works, maybe your current install has problems like AirDisplay incompatible kexts or something along the lines.

Check that your RX 580's power cable ( 2 X Mini 6 pin to 1 X 8 pin ) is correctly connected.
there is a " click " when the cable locks into the socket.

This time, uses a DVI to DVI cable ( if you have one ) ​

Hello guys
I finally did it !
i turned the switch of the Rx580 to gaming mode (default because is dual bios version) i entered it at the mac together with gt120 and left them work together ...
After, i shut down and removed the gt120 and after turn up the MAC the miracle happened ! i had the login screen with rx580 .
the only thing i might regret is that i went at mac updater and download /installed mojave .
Now i am running at MOJAVE and still doing the updates .
One technician told me that was wrong move .
mojave is going to trouble and stall my mac's speed just like any other update ....

Hello i noticed that my mac pro is jerking when playing high quality videos , there are sound interrupts and when panning also like losing frames ... i have the rx 580 8gb GPU ....i noticed this behaviour also when playing the screen saver photos . Can anyone tell me what is probably wrong ?

If you are trying to play x265 videos with high bitrate, Apple don't support RX 580 hardware HEVC decoding/encoding when installed in a MP5,1.

No, only make it worst.

You should stay at 10.14.6. And use the Lilu + WhateverGreen method to activate HEVC decode (if all you want is just smooth playback).

Just follow step 1-15 in that post #1 will do. It's really just read and do, copy and paste. No advance skill involve.

The only step I didn't explain is step 1. But Google "SIP macOS" will be good enough to tell you how to turn that OFF.

Forget Apple, MP5,1 was declared obsoleted already, Catalina don't support it and Mojave is only in maintenance mode.

When we asked about HEVC support for RX 580 they told that was a never intended to work with MP5,1.

I did this procedure, and it works great. Not only can you watch high bitrate/x265 video, it speeds the workflow in FCPX. Note that I did the hex method, and that this was the first time I had ever used a hex editor. I downloaded the free iHex from the App Store. My advice:
- I made many mistakes when attempting this, all from not following the instructions exactly. If you follow the instructions, it works, and if you don't, it won't.
- You should have an alternate boot disk.

Only had issues when use that player? If yes, better stop using it. Just a player anyway. IINA or VLC usually can do better.
