My very best guess is sometime before the new Mac Mini.
You've been asking whether to upgrade or not from your iPad 3 since 2014 (Air 2)...If Apple makes it this late, I am wondering if people like me who cannot afford to upgrade every year should they upgrade and wait for the OLED Display iPad in 2019 ?
OLED Display on an iPad that would be the thing !!

I don't know how expensive iPads are where you're located. Here in the US, MSRP for the basic iPad is roughly half the MSRP of iPad Pro models. If I still had an iPad 3, instead of constantly delaying upgrading waiting for feature after feature on $$$ Pro models wanting to get my money's worth, I'd just grab a basic iPad and enjoy it. Chances are it'll last at least 2-3 years. Note, we did get a basic iPad back in March 2017 to replace an iPad 3. Going by current trajectory, I wouldn't be surprised if it lasted a total of 4-5 years with acceptable performance for typical tasks (not including AR).Yes I wish, I was in the U.S and Electronics would have been that Cheap !!

Mind, if you had gotten an iPad Air 2 upon launch, you would've had a much nicer experience these past 4 years compared to the iPad 3. The Air 2 works pretty well even now. The original iPad Air has gotten laggy but Air on iOS 11 is still a darned sight better compared to iPad 3 on iOS 9 (or iOS 6).
Why? Their current screens are pretty damn good.If Apple makes it this late, I am wondering if people like me who cannot afford to upgrade every year should they upgrade and wait for the OLED Display iPad in 2019 ?

I was about to take the Plunge last year in 2017 with the 10.5" iPad Pro This was back in August-September of 2017 (I have a Philosophy to not to buy an iPad right on day-1, to avoid any Production Flaws and Quality issues like Tint, Display issue etc...so I like to wait for 3 months to let the Production stabilize and the quality becoming consistent) but then one of the side effects of constantly being hooked on to Macrumors is, there was this rumour that came along from Ming Chi Kuo that next year which means 2018 Apple is Planning to release a Face ID iPad Pro and I was like, Man ! Taking a hit on buying a iPad Pro now (2017) and depreciating the value by losing a couple of Bucks in resale. Why not just effin wait !! And the Wait Continues...It is a Massive investment here. And cannot just end up spending on something which is soon gonna be becoming obslete ! I Just have one shot to take, have to take it wisely ! Hence the On going Wait !! Yes, I know now it has been forever, but I am kind of touchy and picky about iPad's !!
Yep, so true. If one had a decent iPad already (e.g. Air 2 or newer), playing the waiting game might even make sense.Keep in mind tho...every iPad that comes out will be replaced by newer better iPads the following year. For example, let’s say the next iPad uses face ID with slimmer bezels and is totally awesome. You are psyched and you immediately buy it. Then the rumors start that the next iPad in 2019 will be even more awesome. It will have an OLED screen where the one you buy only has an LED screen. Do you regret your purchase? Eventually you have to just say I am buying NOW cause I need to buy now. Cause if you don’t, you’ll be playing the waiting game forever.
I agree about a good screen. Just not sure how much better it can get. I have a beautiful Dell 4k monitor. Would never be without a good monitor., I can hardly believe some of the crap people are using. Like putting ten dollar speakers on a five thousand dollar amplifier. Just not goodBut when you compare it with the OLED Displays of the current iPhone X that thing is something else !! OLED Display would make the iPad a thing even dearer than someone would have his or her beloved one lol (Yeah...Yeah...It is a non living entity) but in today's day and age the Internet is the window to the world and I want the best Spectacle/Lens to view it ! And Apple by a big big margin provides it !! I am yet to come across a manufacturer whose displays are as gorgeous as Apple devices are and I am talking about the entire product line up that Apple has ! It is effin gorgeous !!

If they release new iPPs in late 2018 I don’t expect any new iPads in 2019! The earliest release of an OLED iPad would be spring of 2020 or at WWDC 2020 if Apple continues with its 18 month release intervals.
Yep even I agree if Apple releases the iPad Pro of 2018 in later this year we won't see another iteration up till early 2020 !
Not sure if oled will come on iPads to be honest. Guess depends on the panels.
That could be true. When apple released the first 12.9” pro in Nov 2015, they didn’t release the 2nd gen 12.9” & 10.5” ipad pros until June 2017 almost a year and a half later. So that could be the case this time too. But Apple did release the 9.7” ipad pro only a few months later in March of 2016. So you never know. What if apple only releases ONE size ipad pro X(or whatever they’re gonna call it) this year? Like they did with last years iphone X? Maybe that will enable them to release more sizes sometime in 2019. Who knows. They could stagger the releases.
No fear, mate. I also have a 2nd gen 12.9 inch iPad Pro and look forward to upgrading to 3rd gen 12.9 inch in 2018. So just prepare for the purchasingThis is my biggest fear....If that happens I am prepared to stay with my 12.9 gen 2 until 2020 ( don’t think they release a singular 12.9 or bigger in 2019)

From what I can see, Apple always keeps ONE principle in mind: BIGGER IS BETTER. 12.9 inch version (BIGGER) always has the latest chips:
September 2015: 1st gen 12.9 inch iPad Pro, A9X
March 2016: 9.7 inch iPad Pro, A9X
June 2017: 10.5 inch and 2nd gen 12.9 inch iPad Pro, A10X
If history speaks the truth, the scenario will still be the same: 3rd gen 12.9 inch iPad Pro and new size (10.5/11?) will have the latest chip (A11X/A12X) at the same time. For example, if a single size iPad Pro equipped with A11X/A12X is announced this year, the BIGGER ONE (3rd gen 12.9 inch iPad Pro with A11X/A12X) will also be announced at the same time.
From another perspective, if 12.9 inch version is left with A10X and a new SMALLER one equipped with A11X/A12X is announced, customers will be totally confused amd don’t know how to choose ===> if they want bigger screen, they have to stay with A10X; if they want the best performance, they have to purchase a smaller version.
In a word, if a new size iPad Pro is announced this year, 3rd gen 12.9 inch (if not bigger) will also be here.![]()
Not what the rumors are saying though. 10.5 keeps same chassis and goes to 11. 12.9 keeps same screen and loses bezels.Or they think they come close enough with a new 11-11.5“ and cancel the 12.9 altogether because they might not selling enough numbers of units....
Since it seems new iPads will be coming out at the same time or after the new iPhones, do you guys think it will also get A12 and skip A11?
That will be awesome! From A10X to A12, what a great improvement! There was an awesome thread about this maybe two months ago. Try searching @Relentless Power I believe he posted it.
I think the overall impression was they both go to a12. But the one for the iPhone would be optimized for battery while the one for iPad would have more raw power.
