NEC MultiSynch

I have been doing a little research (always a dangerous proposition) but it left me with a couple questions.

1) I assume that the AccuSynch is not as suited for photography post production as other NEC Monitors,is this correct?

2) Does the MulitSynch EA represent an all-round type of monitor in the NEC line-up?

3) If available, should the purchase of NEC MultiSycnh P series be the choice for photo post production?

Widescreen LCD Monitor with Wide Color Gamut

Thanks in advance.

Eizo not in the budget.

Not to be disrespectful, but recommending an Eizo to someone who is shopping for a <$500 monitor is like recommending a Mercedes Benz to someone shopping for a Honda.)

Someday I may get a real high end monitor, but just getting into a Mac Pro from a G4 1.25 iMac is a quantum leap for me.

Anyone have any feedback on my post above regarding the NEC monitors?

Thanks. covrc

Well I recommended a $1,200 model so I missed the goal as well. ;)

But honestly you aren't going to get a consistently accurate monitor if you shoot under a hardware calibrated system like NEC MultiSync uxi line or an Eizo.

Not to be cheeky but you can get the previous model of the one linked for $400 and that here in Japan where these things tend to be with a premium. The difference between this and previous is just the missing DVI port. Also NEC & EIZO are in about the same league. So, as read here, if you find a NEC going around for a good price a bit of search might turn up an EIZO a well ;)

MultiSycnh EA261WM-BK

TN panel.

MultiSynchP221W-BK

PVA panel.

The first one is overpriced, the second one might be alright; however, I would take any on TheStrudel's list the he posted earlier over the both of them.

NEC EA231WMi
Dell Ultrasharp 2209WA
Dell Ultrasharp U2410
HP ZR24w
HP ZR22w
HP LP2475w

I omitted the F2380 as it had some dithering issues with 10.5, but dunno about 10.6, and its the only *VA panel in the list; the rest are IPS and are accurate monitors for their price.

Hi All.
Thanks for the replies and suggestions.

The MultiSynchP221W-BK can be had on NEC as a refurbished unit for $289 which sounds pretty sweet to me. I have a call out to them to see if "SpectreViewII" enabled means it is included in the package. This sounds like a sweet unit for the price point though I do wish it was at least a 24".

Please tell me more about the last year model Eizo to go with my new last year model (early 2009) Mac Pro.

I am really all ears on this subject, I appreciate the feedback regarding the TN panel. When speaking to color management guy at Calumet he suggested be certain to try and get a wide gamet monitor. The NEC multisynch P221 looks like this

http://www.necdisplay.com/Products/Product/?product=48cbd139-f704-486d-9be5-880367d76bfa

# 96% coverage of AdobeRGB color space
# Superior screen performance (1000:1 contrast ratio, 1680 x 1050 native resolution, 300cd/m2 brightness)
# Supports internal programmable 10-bit lookup tables (LUTs) for calibration
# AmbiBrightTM ambient light sensor automatically adjusts the display’s brightness based on lighting conditions

Thanks for the continued help. covrc:)

It means it will work with the SpectraViewII kit if you purchase it, but it's not included with the monitor (though they offer it as a Kit with others).

I picked up an NEC LCD2490WUXi without it, and a separate Eye1 Display 2 (xrite.com) from bhphoto.com (currently ~$210USD above the cost of the monitor).

Oddly enough, I don't even work with graphics (reason = eye strain problems). Since I've gone to NEC and Eizo (have used both over the years), I don't get the headaches I used to. Eizo's prices have gotten a bit out of hand though, and the NEC's seem to offer a better value IMO, particularly compered to the ColorEdge series.

Thanks

Nano...
Thanks for the confirmation regarding the software. I figured that is what it meant. I do have Spyder3 Pro, will that suffice when calibrating?

Yes. :)

You're not locked to the SpectraViewII (might be a little more seemless though, but I can't say for sure as I've not used their software), so you can use whatever puck and software you want, and it still works. :D

I'm in the same boat as you are, i'm in the market for a display also but in sizes 27-30 inch but kinda holding off until I see what the price is going to be on the new 27-inch LED Display if Apple does decides to come out that size and other display i'm looking at is Dell 3008 but it's not LED, WWDC is just few weeks away I can hold off a bit more but you should get Apple 24-inch LED it's awesome looking, BenQ v2410 is LED, Dell G2410 Full HD LED etc...

+1 though my computers do not have mini displayport. I've been looking at U2410 x 2, U2711, HP LP3065, cinema 30, etc...

FWIW, I had a similar goal with a similar budget, and went with the Samsung PX2370. I picked up a refurb on eBay for $210 + $30 shipping; came in the original packaging.

I know everyone is freaking out about the TN panels, but the OP's budget is "<$300". I can't count the number of $500+ monitors that have been tossed out there with the justification "Sure, you'd have to spend twice your budget, but X is a really nice monitor."

Here's a really detailed, really helpful review:

THANK YOU!! I realize that there is a reason that these monitors are so expensive, but I still have a budget and can't spend money I dont have. Thanks for the review on the samsung monitor too, I'll definitely look into that one!

The Dell 2209WA that was listed earlier can be had for $230 before tax with some free shipping.

Thanks

Can you please send me that link?
I cannot seem to find last years models at that price point for the Eizo you mentioned.

Thanks. COVRC

PS, am I in the write ballpark looking at the NEC P221 for $289?

Re: F2380M

It says there it's C-PVA. I wouldn't worry about the backlight, the extended gamut monitors are not LED, AFAIK.

Contrast actually tests at around 3000:1. The others normally go up to 1000:1 in real life.

It looks like the M is not available in USA. They have tested it against the F2380 and the only difference they found it that the M has [1 HDMI, 1 DVI, 1 VGA], while the non-M has [2 DVI, 1 VGA].

Dang that sucks. I was looking at it and really like it. Will it come out in the US soon? Also, where would be the best place to get the samsung px2370? Neither Amazon nor Newegg has it.

I just found the Samsung bx2440x and it looks pretty good. its a 24 inch with LED and fully adjustable for only $300, has anyone had any experiences with this monitor?

I don't need any to tell you that it's a TN panel, and therefore, you're wasting your money.

Don't get fished in by low prices and LED backlighting. The advantages are utterly negligible compared to the performance provided by a PVA or IPS panel.

Like I've said before, I will already have an Apple 24 inch display, I just need more real estate. I only have a certain amount of money that I can spend and want to get the best possible for the amount I have. The NEC monitor is just barely over my budget, and as far as I know it's the best priced IPS monitor. I will not be able to afford an IPS monitor, but it's not that big of a deal because the monitor I am looking for right now will not be my primary.
