I'm confused - you're willing to spend $300, but you can't afford the $30 more for a NEC IPS or similar display?

I don't get how you would say you want the best possible monitor for the amount you have, then go for a $300 TN panel. If you're going to buy a TN panel, just get a cheaper one at closer to $200, because it really doesn't matter a lot at that point.

IF I buy the NEC P221, it has DVI-D & VGA 15-pin D-sub for inputs. Where would I plug in on the Mac Pro to connect the two?

I know that sound simple.but I am coming from a 13 year iMac world.

What is the graphics card used? And what system?

I ask, as though the newer cards tend to be equiped with Mini DisplayPorts (of which can be attached to DVI-D via an adapter), but they also tend to have a single DVI-D connector as well (GTX285 is an exception, as it's DVI-D only, but it's a 3rd party product by EVGA).

It lists higher here, but there are almost always sales, coupons, or you can simply call Dell to get a better price.

It's also out of stock at Newegg, where it was cheaper, and I guess low supplies have driven prices up too.

Would they give me $80 off just because I call them? Also, how long do you think it will take for newegg to get it back in stock? I saw that they had it before at like $310, but that didn't last long. If I can get it for that price then I will go for it no doubt, but having to pay almost $100 more won't work.

They actually do give a better price (I've heard sometimes as much as 25% off) if you call them. NewEgg will get it in stock before too long, I'm sure. The Egg is pretty quick to get popular stuff back in.

Overblown. It's a safe bet that its response time will not be worse than the ACD you already use. Everything looks bad compared to TN panels, but somehow the ASV (S-PVA) panel in my Sharp TV manages to keep up with everything I throw at it.

Do you know what panel type the samsung bx2440x is? It doesn't say on their website if its TN, PVA, or IPS...

I don't need them to say if it's a TN - just check viewing angles. Viewing angles less than 176° pretty much automatically means it's a TN panel, for computer monitors.

NewEgg lists 170°(H) / 160°(V) as the viewing angles, which clearly indicates that it is a TN panel.

Well right now it comes down to the price, whichever one is cheaper I will probably end up getting, unless the NEC fits good enough in my budget.

Dang that sucks. I was looking at it and really like it. Will it come out in the US soon? Also, where would be the best place to get the samsung px2370? Neither Amazon nor Newegg has it.

The non-M has HDCP on the DVI ports. You can just use a DVI-HDMI cable.

Maybe what you lose is sound through the same cable.

Hi and thanks for replying. This is the information listed on the Apple website, is this what you asked for? I am more confused by some of this than I thought I would be.

Can the NEC P221 with DVI-D and VGA 15-pin D-sub be connected up directly to the Mac Pro?

Wide Gamut Monitors

Hi Again and sorry to be a pain. Someone messaged me and asked what I will be using this monitor for. I do a fair amount of photoshop and lightroom. I don't game and I watch some video on. I doubt that much video editing will be done.

I am looking for wide gamut.
IPS or Not, the NEC has a S-PAV panel.
Less than $500 but if I get that close to my cap, I hope that it is 24" or more.
(NEC P221 is 22")
And I need to have it work well with my new Mac Pro.

I keep coming back to the NEC P221 because at it price of $289 refurb, it may be an inexpensive but quality way to get going while saving for a larger and improved screen in the near future.

Thanks Guys.

Well, the P221 has a PVA panel, right? Should be fine, especially since you'll be getting a better panel later on.

The only other "affordable" wide-gamut monitor can think of is the HP LP2475W, but that's over your price bracket a little.

Might try targetting the display you want and then searching your local Craiglist for a used one. Personally I've picked up--

ACD 20" for $200
ACD 23" for $250
ACD 30" for $500

They're all fully functional and beautiful... :)

The only other thing I have against the NEC is the response time...
I wouldn't worry about it for what you're doing. Remember, the times listed may not be the same (i.e Grey to Grey results in lower numbers).

And newer 3rd party IPS monitors do perform better than the older ACD's, as they've newer panels and electronics.

Mac Pro (Early 2009)

(With Mine)
o NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 with 512MB of GDDR3 memory, PCI Express 2.0, one Mini DisplayPort, and one dual-link DVI port = dual-link DVI-I

(OPTIONal) ATI Radeon HD 4870 with 512MB of GDDR5 memory, PCI Express 2.0, one Mini DisplayPort, and one dual-link DVI port = dual-link DVI-I
DVI-I = can use either DVI-A or DVI-D (universal between the -A and -D signals).

So either card will work with that monitor using a DVI-D cable (or any other with a DVI-D input), and no adapter is required. :D

The connectors on the cards are the second pic down from the top:

I'd have to agree here, but I also think it would be a better investement, as there may not be a need for a better monitor as quickly (and it can serve as either additional screen realestate later, or as a backup monitor if a better unit is aquired). The best price I've seen for the HP L2475W is $562.99USD (here). It will need to be calibrated OTB though, as users that have purchased them as well as reviewers, have indicated the stock settings are horrible.

IMO, It would also be a good idea to call HP directly, and see if they offer a better price than the MSRP listed on the website (they do this for computers, so they may be able to as well for just the monitor).

I just got a Dell G2410H , have not unboxed it yet. Gonna do it in the next hour or so....

I'm quite interested in this particular display. Please let us know how it is after you've had a chance to play with it :)

I haven't really seen much on them, but Dell just released some new IPS display monitors. I have two 23" version on their way to me; after a 15% discount coupon the total was just over $500 for both. Not bad for 3 years of pixel perfect. It'll be interesting to see how they stack up.

Dell UltraSharp U2311H is the model.

Wow, that's a really nice monitor and at a very good price. The only thing about it that turns me if is that you cannot move it up or down.

Umm... "Height-Adjustable stand, pivot, tilt and swivel and built in cable-management"
