I haven't really seen much on them, but Dell just released some new IPS display monitors. I have two 23" version on their way to me; after a 15% discount coupon the total was just over $500 for both. Not bad for 3 years of pixel perfect. It'll be interesting to see how they stack up.

Dell UltraSharp U2311H is the model.
I just ordered a pair of these myself. Seems like a really good price on an IPS panel, a pair of these is costing me about what a single U2410 would have cost. They are a bit down on color gamut compared to the U2410 (82% vs. 110%) but if color gamut were that critical to me I'd be looking at an Ezio or a NEC anyway.

Originally I was not considering anything smaller than a 24" but after seeing this post it seems 23" is not all that much smaller than 24".

I am starting to prefer a 23 inch rather than a 24 inch, especially with the limited desk space. Plus, like the guy above said, this is a really good price for an IPS display.

Yep. Be sure to check if the gamut is exactly what you need (82% sRGB, IIRC).

EDIT Hurr, didn't recall correctly. Covers sRGB.

From the tech specs for the U2311

Color Gamut:
82%* (100% sRGB coverage)

*Color gamut (typical) is based on CIE1976 (82%) and CIE1931 (72%) test standards.

the CIE color space is a bit misleading as it is a LAB color space not an RGB color space

Still pretty poor for an IPS but unless your color correcting for a printer probably not that big of a deal.

Might try targetting the display you want and then searching your local Craiglist for a used one. Personally I've picked up--

ACD 20" for $200
ACD 23" for $250
ACD 30" for $500

They're all fully functional and beautiful... :)

+1 ..IMHO,these monitors are sweet!hehe..wish i can replace my 20" into a 30":(

i'm a graphic designer so color is really important. i work with a Dell Ultrasharp monitor and its really suberp. at work we have 30" Mac monitors but i prefer the Dell Ultrasharps over Apple without a doubt. When you do go for Dell make sure you look at the "ultrasharp" series. the others use TN panels.

by the way in 3 years time we had "3"! 30" Mac monitors give up. and 2 have the "exact" same problem, when working you get lwhat looks like blue pixelation all over the screen, i mean blue pixels everywhere...sometimes it just goes away and sometimes its just there the entire day. come to think of that this was a 3000+euro monitor. Whatever you do, stay away from Apple Monitors they suck!

NEC MultiSync LCD2690WUXi

Would it be dollar foolish to buy a leftover MultiSync LCD2690WUXi (not the current MultiSync LCD2690WUXi 2 model) for under $600?

26" Wide Gamut NEC Monitor with 1 yr warranty from NEC.

Thanks in advance.

No, that's actually a hell of a price - if you're okay with buying an older display (and many people actually think that's the superior one, due to it featuring an A-TW polarizer). Lots of people want that and can't find it. Is it used, though? If it's still new, that's a ridiculously good price, unless NEC's soon-to-be-released monitors actually outdo that popular display.

As to the Dells, I think when I eventually get around to buying a third display, it'll probably be U221H. Then I'll have a 4:3, 16:10, and 16:9 display each at very different pixel densities. It'll be a fantastic testbed.

My u2311H displays came today. I just opened one at work and put it up quick. I'm pretty happy with it, especially for the price. Thankfully, the "connected to monitor" VGA cable is just a cable placed on the port, not a hardwired one, that was my biggest worry.

I don't have time to do anything more than say I have mine already...they were scheduled for tomorrow via FedEx, but my driver is awesome. When he sees a package he takes it instead of leaving it for the next day to be "on time."

NEC 2690i

I pulled the trigger and bought my NEC MultiSync LCD2690WUXi today.

I am very excited to get going and set up my new Mac Pro with it. It sits in my study waiting for the monitor.
:D

I've recently acquired a samsung xl2370 and this monitor is very very nice and led backlit too! I found the last one out of the 6 best buys near me on sale for $289 and its just as good as the 24" LED ACD. The only difference is that the cinema display has a much better viewing angle and a bit brighter display. But I'd definitely recommend the samsung.

If I had a mac pro desktop again, I'd definitely run dual displays with the samsungs.

That was my first choice for a second monitor because of the LED backlighting. But I think I'm gonna go with the u2311h because of better color and viewing angle. Also it is more adjustable.
