That is very interesting! Hopefully when someone on heres tries it they will let us know!

After the command do you need to restart or something like that?

EDIT: So its not just the Dell monitor, it is all non-Apple monitors, correct?
I tried it a while back, it works very well.

No, just log out, and yes, it works for any non-Apple display.

Just tried this on my Dell U2311H. It works! Significant difference. I thought I was going crazy.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! :D:D:D
Glad to be of service. :)

That really is awesome. I had no idea that different displays would render text differently, I thought that was 100% GPU.

Valsalva, what do you use your u2311h for mainly?

I use it for coding and web development. Thus text is a priority and the difference was quickly noticed. It now works great.

At first I thought the problem was due to a bad DVI to mini DP adapter. I even bought a mini DP to DP connector and that didn't help. I thought I had a defective display but was puzzled because text in graphics was normal. This terminal command is now in my personal library.

This may sound funny, but aside from acceleration and piping it out, the GPU has very little to do with your output, because OS X controls on display output are purely non-GPU software tweaks. Fascinating tidbit about the subpixel rendering - I've never used  displays and it never seemed off to me. Possibly because I hadn't seen an  display connected to my computer...I wonder if it's worth trying? Text always seemed plenty sharp to me.

I've seen two or three users on here with u2711s. It's apparently a very nice display, but not glossy like the Apple LED display, and it has more inputs.

And if you care, no iSight. But it is much more adjustable than an Apple LED display.

Sorry if this has been covered, but any suggestions on a 27in or more monitor that is good for gaming? I need big for looking at logic studio, and so others can see what's happening, but would also like to game. Budget around 500$ Tell me if this is too off topic and I'll make a new thread.

If you are looking for an IPS monitor, I'm not sure you will find one in that size for around $500. You would probably need to go with TN which won't give near as good color or viewing angles.

At 27", it's not possible to get IPS for $500. PVA based may be possible though (better than TN).

If TheLOGICalone is willing to scale it down a bit for an IPS based mode, the HP ZR24W is $400 at Amazon (24" S-IPS panel). 26" units usually leap to ~$1300USD from decent makers (i.e. NEC), which is a steep jump for IPS based monitors in the 26 - 30" range.

But given the use seems to be gaming, TN is sufficient, as is a PVA based unit, which would either allow for the larger size, or save on funds a bit if a slightly smaller unit is selected.

Thankyou, it's all a bit confusing trying to find a balance between large size, highish refresh rate, viewing angles and price but I will look into your suggestions.

There are several 27" displays out there with a low price point. Problem is they all have either a resolution of 1920x1080 or 1920x1200 and in my eyes that's to low for such a big display. The best value display is the Dell UltraSharp U2711. It's 27", has a resolution of 2560x1440, 6 ms refresh and it's an IPS-display. But it's way beyond your price range.

Like as far as refresh rate, viewing angles, I guess overall value. More inputs is good, as I read above, matte is also good but not a huge difference...

Generally speaking TN panels will have better refresh rates. So if it will be mainly for gaming, go for a TN monitor. However, IPS panels don't have bad refresh rates, just that TN is faster.

Got my 2311h today and had it up for the past few hours.

Nice build quality. I like the base, wish it rotated a little more than it does but not really a big deal. Screen was set really bright by default. None of the presets really matched my ACD so had to manually adjust it. Looks great after calibration. Menu system not too hard to follow, buttons on the side bezel easy to use. Colors and brightness seems even across the panel. NO TEXT ISSUES AT ALL without any adjustments being made in OSX. Text looks identical to my ACD.

To nitpick, my only complaint it that it takes longer to turn on than my ADC. When I wake my ADC it comes on almost instantly. The Dell takes about 2 seconds before you see image again. Really not a big deal.

Overall I'm very happy. Don't see how you can beat this display for a pricepoint of under $300.

I'll post some pics later.

Good to hear! Based on what I've heard so far, I think I'm going to pick one of these up today. Seems like a great deal at just under $300.

Very good to hear! I plan on ordering mine in 5 days when I order my MP :)

I think this upcoming Dell 30" display could be the one to get. The Dell U3011.

It's bigger than the 27" ACD, it's matte, and it has a lower pixel density making reading text and menus easier.

The only downside to it could be that it's not LED backlit so it may take longer to warm up and it may not last as long.

I think I'm going to hold out for this display.
