So if I use 4x32gb sticks, I put them in 3, 5, 8 and 10 ? And if I want to add 2x8gb I put those in 1 and 12? These configs are driving me crazy lol

My post from another thread:

To get the most out of your new Mac run only six or twelve Dimms. If six, all should be matching. If twelve all twelve should be matching or six should be matching and the other six should match each other. Any other congifuration will suffer a speed penalty.

As far as your RAM supplier, I recommend Data Memory Systems (DMS). They are Mac specialists and their RAM carries a lifetime guarantee:

My first Mac, a Mac Plus, came with 1MB RAM, I upgraded it to the max - 4MB ?

You can indeed mix Eight and Sixteen GB sizes, but for the best performance it must be six of each installed properly:

So I have the 16-core 32gb version, and just bought 4x32gb sticks from Nemix. Should I mix them or just use the 32gb ones?
Is your computer mission critical to the company? Are you using software that pushes RAM usage to the limit? If so, then don't mix. Just the 32gb. If you are just editing 10-minute clips for YouTube, then you won't even notice the effect of mixed RAM. I've had months to test this out.

Thanks OkiRun, I won't mix. I will probably get two more sticks so I have six in total as mentioned before here it seems to make a difference too.

I've a Mac Pro 28 cores with original 6 X 32gb (apple) LR 2933 MHz DDR4 ECC. I bought some extra Dimms 4 x 64gb (kingston) LR 2933 MHz DDR4 ECC Dimms. Apple won't start up
I've tried every combination but they don't work together... any ideas?
Anyone interested in the 32gb

1) Make sure to follow set up chart inside Mac Pro Ram Memory Cover
2) Pull out all RAM sticks and reseat steadily and securely
These are both good to do together at same time

When I added RAM, it did not start up ~ because the connector on case did not sit properly. I had to lift case off and reset the case cover with strong push down.
Not saying that is your problem - but won't start if connector not making contact. It happened to me. Only other thing is RAM stick not seated properly - that I can think of.

OR -
If you use 32GB DIMMs with other capacities, such as 8GB or 16GB, they must be installed according to these requirements:

  • Use only R-DIMMs.

Good luck fix.

Are you mixing LR-DIMMs and R-DIMMs in the same System ? That's not permitted .

The physical installation looks OK .

Here's Apple's advice on installing different size modules in the same System :

Installing DIMMs of mixed capacities
If your DIMMs are different capacities (like four 16GB DIMMs and four 32GB DIMMs), they must be installed according to these requirements:

Install DIMMs in order of the channels.
Install DIMMs in identical pairs for each channel.
Install DIMMs in order of smallest to largest capacity.
Use only R-DIMMs or only LR-DIMMs.

How to install DIMMs of mixed capacities
Find out which slots to use for your DIMM configuration.
Starting with the lowest capacity pair of DIMMs, install your DIMMs in identical pairs from smallest to largest capacity in order of the memory channels:
Channel 1: Slots 5 and 8
Channel 2: Slots 3 and 10
Channel 3: Slots 1 and 12
Channel 4: Slots 6 and 7
Channel 5: Slots 4 and 9
Channel 6: Slots 2 and 11

Just wanted to say thanks! That diagram really saved my day, don't know why it isnt in the Apple Memory upgrade page.

In my case I was struggling to mix recently bought 2x64GB OWC RDIMMs with the ones that come with the 7,1 (bare minimum memory for 12 core is 32GB - 4x8GB RDIMMs) on 5/8 + 3/10

Turns out I was adding the new memory to 1/12 and it wasn't booting, but it seems the bigger memory needs to go in the first channels. So I inserted the 2x64 in 5+8 and used the 4x8GB in the 3/10 + 1/12 and voilá: worked like a charm.

So thanks again.
