Apparently it's after 3 days of no contact with the registered device and it's moving.

So if it's used for someone going to school and comes back in contact with the registered device, then there is no reason for it to start beeping.
Apple has -never- defined the logic, so unless you can cite your source, its hearsay.

I've had a different, first hand experience. So I am certain that isn't correct either.

Thanks Both for your answers and advice on this.

It would be great if Apple did describe in detail what would happen. I'll try and find some videos from users to see if they show what happens.

I'll be buying these from Costco who have a great returns policy. If they don't work as I want them to, I can simply return them 😁

Its nothing special these products are a dime a dozen. Better off just buying a card sized wallet findmy tracker and a basic magsafe wallet you like.
I used to have the Chipolo tracker inside a magsafe wallet but it became too heavy and bulky. I find this particular magsafe wallet far superior as you can also charge it -- something you cannot do with chipolo card.

But what do I know?

There are other cards that support wireless charging <relevant emoji>. that is a standout feature though!

What I know is if you wanted REALLY small, you could use an Orbit x Glasses. Lasts me about 4 weeks before feeling like I better recharge or risk not being able to find it. Not the best battery life, but definitely the worlds smallest FindMy device. If you’re trying to reduce ‘bulk’, that’s another way to go.

Oh wow … it plays sound too! That’s legit.

Abd you can turn off the sound should you need to?
It only ever beeps on initial pairing and you are in range and choose to locate it via 'Play Sound' in FindMy. You can choose 'Stop Sound' or wait until the sound finishes.

It does not have a sensor to detect motion, therefore it does not beep when moved when away from the paired device. But it will show up as a 'device following you' just as any other find my device detected by your device(s) will.

It does have a tiny, fiddle-y, proprietary charging clip/cable situation. Mildly annoying, but what else ya gonna do? Nothing else is this small.

I bet someone has created a 3d printed pogo pin jig for charging them.........

I have one on my main house keys, and one on each set of my vehicle keys, one in each of my main backpacks (work/camera bag), a Chipolo card in my wallet and a Eufy tracker under the saddle of my commuter bicycle. I think some of the keys/backpack ones are also third party, a mix of Eufy and Chipolo. Which for my purposes work as well as the AirTags, in some cases better, as they have a hole to attach to a keyring without having to buy something else.

Thanks Both for the info. It's great to know there are other options to choose from, and possibly better options than the airtag.

So now to choose one of the many. It's late here in the UK so a job for the morning.

Have fun!

The third party ones all seem to be mostly the same, effectively. Some do have different tones though.

Usually I drive the decision with finding which model Amazon has an additional coupon. I've gotten some really great deals!

Let us know what you end up gettin!

I'm going to cheat a bit, and tell you folks my biggest use for the Tile tracker: I can press a button on the Tile, and have my iPhone make noise. That's something AirTags can't do! Even if you generally prefer AirTags to Tiles, I would recommend keeping a Tile on your keyring (or something) so that you can find your iPhone.

I just use another (or someone else’s) phone to call my lost phone and listen for the ringer.

When they first launched, I ordered a 4 pack and a couple of key rings. I gave one set to my mom, I kept one, and the other two are still in my closet.

I used it several times over the years to find my keys. But it was bulky in my pocket, especially since I switched from Honda to Ford and Ford sucks on key fobs. A few months ago, the key holder started tearing and I think tore apart, so I took it off my key ring. It's been a lot easier to carry it around in my pocket and honestly, I don't know if I'll replace it.

Checked luggage, plane or cruise

but I put one in stuff I have with me as well such as personal bag and overhead bin luggage. I've had to check my overhead bin luggage before, like on a connecting flight when they put you in of those 40 seat jets which doesn't have enough room overhead for a single napkin.

I've bought the Air Tags in the four pack, which is a better deal per unit.

I read that one quickly and the "it" in the second sentence referring to the AirTag (subject of the first sentence) and not the car (preposition) really threw me for a minute! I thought, well, cool, glad you were able to retrieve your stolen air tag.

In addition to the things mentioned here (keys, wallet, etc) I have one on my son's golf rangerfinder and mine. He tends to leave it on the golf cart or it falls out of his bag. Been able to find it a couple of times and love getting reminded that it was left though it takes being about a mile away before we get the reminder to turn around and get it.

EDIT: I use off-brand Airtags, FTR.
