So I need to pay 99$ for the 3.0 beta?

Would My download eligibility be instant, or would the lengthy approval process hinder my 3.0 enjoyment?

Could i just download the 3.0 OS and install it on my phone without having to deal with the developer mess? Or would this crack path cause problems?

zerocustom1989 - Lengthy approval process. You will NOT get instant access for $99 as far as I remember (I have had access since July, so I don't know if this is still the case).

You're better off just waiting until it hits the torrent sites.

Nope apparently you can't do anything 2.2.1 on the device ... that is stupid anyone get 3.0 installed though and see if your apps are gone ... I would so miss my apps...

So ALL 2.x apps that you've installed go away? Can you get them again via the App Store? I'm a little confused here as to what 3.0 won't allow you to do.

I want to get the straight answer before I start installing stuff.

If I get the 3.0 SDK, can I still write for 2.2.1 devices?
If I put 3.0 firmware on my iphone, can I still run 2.2.1 apps (either my old apps from the store or 2.2.1 apps I write)?
Does anybody have a clear answer on this yet?

Basically, should I be purchasing a dev ipod touch (not getting another iphone because I'll need another AT&T plan). And, should I be purchasing another mac for development?

It would suck if our XCode and Devices were locked to 3.0 development only. We need to confirm some answers make a sticky about it.

Is there a timeline estimation of when 3.0 official will be released?

OK guys I am now restoring in itunes ... So the best way to install 3.0 is through organizer in xcode doesn't have to be the new SDK to do this part

Almost done restoring in iTunes

Phone is restarting

bbrosemer, when 3.0 came up, were your purchased apps still there and functional?

I've upgraded to 3.0. All of your old apps are there. They all run.

Other than that, I am subject to the NDA. :)

Then you have to restore the backup and sync your apps...mines in that stage now. :)

Oh another guinea pig

Yes they are ... so I do not see why you can't build 2.2.1 apps in the new sdk but whatever so the moral of the story is you can install 3.0 without the SDK ... and moreover if you want to hold off on upgrading the SDK ... go right ahead and you will still be able to develop for 2.2.1 .. just not on your phone

Well, I'd like to attack 3.0 now, but continue 2.2.1 dev. So, I guess the next logical question is can I install the 3.0 SDK but still compile for 2.2.1? Or, can I perhaps have both SDK's installed on the same box as if they're 2 separate programs?

If possible, it sounds like the latter is the way to go.

I do not think you can have both installed my suggestion and what I will be doing ... if you have another machine install the 3.0 sdk on that one ... so you can continue to test and develop for 2.2.1 just you will be stuck with the simulator ... but oh well...

Syncing 14GB of crap takes forever

IDK if it was just me but sync seemed slow

That's what I was afraid of. I'd like some more confirmation on this, but it sounds like I'll be running out for a mac mini in a few days.

Is there any option to go back to 2.2.1, if I install the firmware 3.0?

adhoc

I was able to put my adhoc 2.21 apps back on xcode, therefore you can build for 2.21 in the 3.0 xcode

joshsroka, this is what I fear the most (from the 'read me before downloading' section of the developer page):

iPhone SDK for iPhone OS 3.0 beta is for development use only. This new version should only be deployed on devices dedicated for iPhone OS 3.0 beta software development and cannot be used for submitting iPhone OS 2.2.1 applications.
