How to buy a 3090? From the local scalpers?
yep I factored in that too and added $3000 for the 3090 instead of $1500 but it still cheaper than what Apple charges for their high-end card which is weaker than the RTX 3090.

Apple chargers $10,800 for their "high end card". Maybe Apple is a scalper and scammer

I got my 3090 Founders Edition from Best Buy for $1500. Best Buy does a big GPU drop on their web site like every two weeks.

I’ve been following a discord server for components and I only saw xbox drop from best buy awhile ago. Never saw any GPU from best buy. I’ve seen office depot and amazon a few times.

They don't. Been following Best Buy and 15 other sites since the 3090 was released. And they sell out instantly everywhere. Talking as if it's something casual and easy to get is nonsense.

It's pretty much luck of the draw but I got two 3090 FEs from BB drops. It used to be considered a bad buy before demand and shortage caused 3080 prices to be overinflated and 10GB VRAM isn't future proof.

Get on some Discord channels that alert to stock drops. I'm on a few and BB just had another big GPU drop Friday 4/2/2021. Done with GPUs and in the market for a 48" LG C1 OLED.

M1 is my first Mac after 17y of Windows.

Bought partially due M1 hype, but MOSTLY due segmented OEM market of Windows laptops...

Buying Windows laptop is like going for groceries with the list that wife gave you. There is a high chance one prefered component will not be on available - and you will have to settle for less... (CPU, or ammount of RAM, screen quality, battery)..

AMD 4800U/H and 4900H/HS launch availability in the top OEM segment was nowhere - probably killed by the existing OEM contracts with Intel.

Finally, product could still have issues - coil whine, backlight bleed etc. Good luck in replacing customized OEM product!! You would wait for months...

Finally - price you stated above is still not attractive. For 700 USD - maybe...
- M1 Mac has better res
- 4800U is indeed comparative to M1 - but try packing Nvidia 1650 in Windows ultrabook (which is comparator to M1 GPU 8-core).
- Battery on M1 Mac is better
- All iOS apps work on M1 Mac (sideloaded)
- M1 can already run W10 on Arm faster then any dedicated W10 on Arm device... and WoA exexutes x86/x64 code from recent builds...
- No Win device can run BigSur..
- Mac is more hardware-integrated device and has better QC than any Windows OEM, except for Samsung (but they dont sell their Win laptops worldwide).

So:

Buying Windows laptop: weeks of search and reviews for the ideal device, narrowing it to 1-2 and realizing your desired conf is out of stock. Price: expensive..

Buying M1 Mac: going to the store and picking it up. Everything best is already inside.. Base MBA has the best value/money in the laptop market...

Amen! So true, you said it all!!!

There is no crappier computer than a windows laptop...

However, my Desktop Ryzen 9 5950X and 6900XT Machine will destroy a Mac Pro that costs about triple its price. If I want to browse the web and use email and stuff though, I use my M1 mini I have plugged into another input on my 4K monitor.

lol how an M1 thread has turned into comparing Macs released years ago to Threadripper workstations

The Threadripper killer for video is coming. the M1 runs in like 5-15 watts and is an entry level part.

Yeah the current Mac Pro sucks. Its an intel box. It's a primary example of why

  • Apple has moved to their own processors
  • The afterburner cards exist

The M1 will never compete with a thread ripper.
I don't think Apple would even bother competing. They probably are focused on achieving their target performance level and move on to the next iteration. My guess tho. is that they will probably come very close without trying very hard.

to compete with a 64 core threadripper, Apple will need to make a 64 core Apple Sillicon which Apple will never do, as rumours point to only a 32 core Apple Silicon max.

High end mac desktops will never beat high end PCs in terms of performance and value

You’ve got until the end of 2022 to cook that crow.
Because you’ll be eating crow by then.

Never is too strong a word to use in the field of tech. Test done by Anandtech shows that a single M1 CPU core can already saturate a 128-bit LPDDR4X memory bus, or about 64GB/s. There's no point having a ton of CPU cores sitting around waiting for data. IMHO, if Apple increases the memory bus to 256-bit for the existing M1 SoC, performance will increase further, all else being equal, and that's with most software not even remotely optimised for the M1.

With DDR5 memory and even wider than 256-bit memory buses (which I think is a definite eventuality), I'm excited to see what newer Mx SoCs brings to the table.

A passively cooled laptop processor will never compete with a 300 watt workstation processor, say it aint so!

I was replying to the post above mine, geniuses...

Apple is right now stuck on PCI3 , that may be due to Intels slow adaptation of PCI 4, but my Ryzen machine is on PCI 4 and its speed makes the M1 looks slow by comparison, and that's just my ****ing around machine for playing a few games. There isn't a Mac Pro in existence that can compete with my computer workstation that crunches/crushes data Like the US crushing Iraq in the first Gulf War. Anyway, Apple really needs to advance to the next step, DDR5 and PCI4 would be awesome. IMO, they have no excuse now.

This is a thread about M1 so I don’t understand where this comment is coming from. The M1 chip also uses PCIe 4 so Apple isn’t stuck on 3. Apple hasn’t updated the Mac Pro with the M-series yet.
