Thanks CWallace. I don’t see a Drobo extension in the privacy section in the system preferences. Any other suggestions? Thank you again!
This actually fixed my problem. From the Apple Community forums.

Update... 1 week later Drobo Dashboard version 3.5.2 (115658)...

Still does NOT WORK... are they expecting us to do some testing before releasing the update...? Seriously what's going on there, everyone is stuck with this and they give us another useless update...?

🤬🤬🤬

Is this totally down to Drobo or is there a wider issue? In addition to my USB Drobo causing instability and unmounting periodically I have a USB card reader that is also disappearing from finder but then causes an unmount before disconnecting warning if unplugged.

3.5.2 fixed the issue for a fair number of people, so hopefully macOS 11.1 will fix it for you when it drops as many on the Beta program said the issue was resolved when they updated (this was before 3.5.2 became available).

Ok guys,

I had some kind of breakthrough... why this did not happen before, I am not sure but anyway I cut it short, here we go.

I tried to open the Drobo dashboard while Drobo was NOT up.

The system then returned the following message:

" Warning

Drobo system extension has been blocked by MacOS. Please go to "System Preferences >> Security & Privacy >> General" pane and allow the extension to be loaded. "

I did exactly this then boot up the Drobo and the icon did appear on the desktop... finally...!!!

So this is my take on this (I might be wrong...):

It looks like in OS Big Sur there are a few more OS security layouts which were stopping the Drobo extension to load as mentioned in the message.
But considering that I did install the new version of dashboard more than 24 hours ago and it did not work then, I never got to the message, I suspect that It might depend on what is loaded at the same time on my MAC PRO.
Note that I am not running any anti virus software, I probably will now that the extension managed to go through the system.
So I suspect results may vary from one system to another.

I keep testing and see if I have more issues. I will document them.

To follow what I was saying on my previous post. I am testing this connection and IT IS NOT STABLE...

I mean, if you open Lightroom 6 for instance, the thunderbolt connection drop out after a few minutes and the drive disappear from the desktop, no time to download pictures from a camera...😵😵😵😵😵😵😵😵
The Drobo stop completely a few minutes after disconnecting from my MACPRO (No light, like a after a shutdown).

I say we are 50 % there; so to be positive, there is progress but it is not ready just yet.

Hope it helps.

Cheers.

Now working for me with my USB Drobo. Seems that uninstalling Drobo Dashboard with the Drobo disconnected, rebooting, installing Drobo dashboard then plugging in Drobo did the trick.

I spoke too soon! Drobo unmounted during a file move 😥.

After all the issues I ended up having with Big Sur, I got back to Catalina for stability. And my DROBO is mounting better than it did with Big Sur.

I wait for the new OS to mature a bit more.

Agree with this. No time to play about! It's all about storage and go here. Just need a place to dump large footage.
Not sure of any DAS options that compare...

Want a NAS? No problem, plenty to choose (just go Synology)
DAS via USB3/TB with hot-swappable drives of any kind? I'm out of the loop but I can't think of any which is a shame.

Terramaster make USB3/TB3 DAS and NAS.

I have a Terramaster D5 - TB3.

They have just fixed the Big Sur TB issue with their latest driver.

Has anyone gotten a Drobo to mount via Thunderbolt on an M1 Mac? USB works. Either way, the dashboard does not find it. I am on the newest Dashboard release.

MacOS 11.1 update has fixed the Big Sur USB issue for me, able to access and move files on the Drobo again, no issues so far.

Good to hear. Did you update your Drobo Dashboard prior?

The Drobo Dashboard update fixed the issue for me under 11.01 so I am a bit hesitant to upgrade to 11.1 incase it breaks something in the Drobo Dashboard, but I am hoping that the DD update might have just pushed whatever was done in 11.1 to fix it forward to 11.01.

I had tried the Drobo Dashboard update some time back, including deleting and fresh install but without success. I was therefore already at the latest version before updating to MacOS 11.1.

How are TerraMasters? I read the build quality is pretty shoddy.

My D5 TB3 seems ok, not cheap price, only items that are plastic are drive carriers, fans pretty quiet. Support seems ok, they announced a Big Sur fix pretty quick.

I shied from DROBO as I got burnt when Dataconnected Transporter stopped supporting SOHO users, I believe the CEO was/is at DROBO now.

Can anyone recommend a DAS (thunderbolt or USB) that doesn't require any software / drivers other than stock MacOS and works with drives formatted as APFS?

Other World Computing's ThunderBay line can work in JBOD (Just a Bunch of Disks) which would require no additional software. They also support software-controlled RAID via SoftRAID. This will probably be where I go should my Drobo 5D eventually fail.

Updated to 11.1 and Drobo is still working.
I spoke too soon (again!). Had been working under 11.1 but last night started the old freezing Finder issue as soon as I try to move or copy files to it 🤬. Still no reply from Drobo support.

I mirrored the set up on my two Mac Mini's and thunderbolt is working on 2018 Mac Mini but not on my M1 Mac Mini. I'll have another look at the Security and Privacy settings. Both have Big Sur 11.1 and the 3.5.2 update.

Hate to necro a thread, but has anyone had any success reformatting their dedicated Time Machine partition on their Drobo as APFS? There's talk that it's much faster in BS 11.1 and 11.2 over 11.0.1..
