Bioshock Infinite

I too am terribly disappointed in the performance of Bioshock Infinite. The mouse movement is very jerky and the video is not very smooth.

I have completed this game under BootCamp with no issues but it looks like i will have to wait for Mavericks to get the performance hit that it needs on OSX.

I am playing on a brand new 12 core 3.06GHz Mac Pro with a Radeon 7950 3GB GPU and 32GB RAM. I have not tried it on my 2012 MBP yet but at present I consider it unplayable.

Overall very disappointed with the OSX version.

If purchased from the Mac App Store, the Bioshock Infinite configuration file can be located along the following very lengthy path:

Users/Library/Containers/com.aspyr.bioshock3.appstore/Data/Library/Application Support/Bioshock Infinite/XGame/Config/XUserOptions.ini

Open the XUserOptions.ini file with TextEdit, scroll down to the very end and adjust the ResolutionX and ResolutionY parameters to your desired values. I was able to successfully change this to match the native 1920X1200 resolution on my iMac and the game launches with these new display settings. However, as already mentioned in previous posts, you cannot change the display resolution in-game.

Hope this works-please post back with your feedback!
Thanks a lot. I would never of thought of looking there! Works fine at 2560x1440 now.

Your rig is drool worthy geoff, but unfortunately we are seeing lots of issues with the 7950 GPU, which is why the card is unsupported currently. I'm actually surprised your not seeing a total slideshow right now. It was that bad in our testing.

I admit, it was a strange decision we had to make leaving the biggest, baddest Mac card on the market off the supported list. Since such a tiny fraction of the market has this card however, we decided to ship knowing that we would add it back in later.

Hey Blair,

I am experiencing crashing about 10 minutes into the game - at the exact same location every time. I am running the game through Steam. I am running a late 2012 iMac.

I e-mailed support with a crash report and system report but not sure how long it will take them to get back with me.

Personally I am wondering if it has something to do with authentication? I had crashes with xCom, but when I disconnected from the internet it didn't crash anymore.

Thanks for your time

Surely, it's a driver bug that you are investigating with Apple?
Some tests using the 7950 with the Heaven benchmark under Mavericks dp6 show results as good as windows, with tessellation and all. Hopefully, Mavericks will solve a lot of issues...

Yes, definitely a driver issue that we are digging into with both ATI and Apple. While I havent actually seen that card under Mavericks yet, we are seeing promising performance gains on most of our titles in Mavericks. We will of course have new bugs too, but that goes with any new OS launch.

I think to assume Mavericks will level the playing field is going a bit far, but it is a big step forward, and we are super excited about the possibilities.

Hey Barrett, so sorry for the crash. Are you getting a crash report? Authentication errors are rare and usually happen on startup, not after time in game, but certainly weirder bugs have happened. Curious, have you attempted to play in offline mode, or disconnected from the net?

Support will be back in the office on Tuesday and can dive into the crash log if you are having one. Also, what settings are you running on, specifically resolution?

I adore this game. Been waiting for it to be available on the Mac for a while. Plays smooth as butter on the spec in my sig. I'm curious, while the in game resolution is obviously... lacking. Does the game even support 2560x1440 if the config file is edited?

I'm sorry, but this port needed more time in the oven. I tried running this on my 2013 (Haswell) 13" MBA - base specs (4GB, i5, HD5000). No dice. It plays, but the frame rate is atrocious, and aiming is nigh impossible with the constant dips. The only way to get a stable 30FPS (or even 25+) is to set everything to the bare minimum, and run at 640X480. Not acceptable, seeing as on Windows (via Bootcamp) it could easily run at 1280X720 on medium with this config. I realize Macs, particularly laptops, are not built as gaming powerhouses, but this is a brand new machine with a competent graphics card. Hopefully, Mavericks will improve performance.

is there a way to test high texture settings by changing stuff in the options file? Since the menu options only let you go as far as normal, and since you can actually change the res setting via config, was wondering about texture options as well.

Mind you, i am just asking to see just how i was actually hoping the game would be able to run for a rmb even at a 1440 resolution only, but alas… the game really needs some tweaking and optimizing.

Actually i just changed a bunch of settings via config…

i turned textures to high and didnt see much of a performance hit, over normal so i dont know why aspyr doesnt let you change these particular settings.

The framerate is still bad imho, but the performance hit between normal textures and high is not that bad.

Good morning, I just wanted to post that Bioshock Infinite does run on a Mini 2.5 i5 with a Radeon m6630 "256 not 512" and 4 gigs of ram. Very odd that Aspyr says this config is not supported. Im sure it has something to do with the Intel integrated graphics Apple has used for years in base machines and perhaps Apple politics, Who knows? I did have to update to 10.8.4. otherwise the game would not even let me load it up so take note. 10.8.4 is a must.

settings
full screen
16 x 9 widescreen
1280 x 720
graphics Low
frame rate unlocked

Plays just fine, estimate avg of around 30 fps & up, not the fastest but without any doubt I'm in and enjoying the game, did run the medium graphics and couldnt really see much difference but did notice a slight slow down when moving about. Just wanted to mention this will stress out your system after a lil while of playing temps went up to over 176 degrees which was a lil high for my taste. Solution clean out the mini, vacuum it out, Turn on smcFanControl run the fan at 4000 rpms during gaming and temps now seem to hold at 151 after many hours of Bioshock Infinite. This version of the Mini should have been supported officially by Aspyr. Come on Aspyr you dont need 512 graphics:rolleyes:
Just goes to show that the lil mini machine with a dedicated 256 graphics M6630 can float in the clouds. Hope this helps out some fellow Mac Mini M6630 users out there and Enjoy!

Mavericks will improve performance. I'm torn. They missed their first goal for getting it out in July. I can see why they didn't want to miss another month, just for pride's sake, and reputation with Mac gamers for keeping their word.

But, if 10.9 and its OGL 4.1 stack are going to make the difference, why not wait until 10.9 is released? How many more months would they have missed? How much favor would that lapse have lost them in the Mac community?

These are decisions I sure wouldn't want to be responsible for.

A real damned if they do, damned if they don't situation. I remember Blair also mentioning that there will be some gains when 10.8.5 is released. Every little bit will help.

I find performance to be acceptable on my MBP running the game at 1280x800, medium details, and a couple minor edits to one of the .ini files.

My performance

I'm playing it on a Macbook Air 2013 i5 with 4gb of ram (wich they had brought i7 to my country) and at first before I went into Columbia everything was running fine. afterwards I think the Frame rate goes around 30 and 15 or so when in open big places.

Could you recommend me a setting you have tried in my machine? I wish I could continue playing in high.

Right now I'm in high buth with ambient occlusion on off and dynamic shadows also, still looks amazing.

Is there a way to check the current FPS?

Benchmark Tool

I Bought it on steam and I just noticed there is a benchmark script on the app folder, but I have not been able to run it yet.

It would be awesome if someone could provide tips to make the game run better via changes in the config file.

As I said I am playing on a retina macbook pro 15 inch.

My Current Config

Right now I'm playing like this:

720p
Antialising - on
Textures - Low
the other textures - Low
Light Shafts - On

Everything else is set to off

At least with low on textures and antialising off it looks like the xbox game. Withouth Antialising I can't stand it.

Αspyr,

You mentioned in an earlier message that you see performance improvements in 10.8.5

Are we talking significant performance improvements in terms of framerate, or is it just small bits and pieces.

I have put the game on hold because I am waiting for future upgrades/improvements and dlc.

Thank you.

Well...as we discussed earlier, that's totally subjective. I think given your current experience with the game and how you describe it here (assuming you have no bugs causing your bad performance), I would say the performance gains will be perceived by you as bits and pieces. For some, they might be "significant".

Did you ever start a support ticket? Here is a video of the same machine running Infinite. How is what you are experiencing compared to this?

Anything you can tell me about mine Blair?

I forgot to mention on my previous post that I actually uninstalled the game and redowloaded from the start.

Now the game plays fairly smooth at 1440x900 in normal settings. It was much better and i can say playable than my original experience.

So yeah something weird must have happened the first time i downloaded the game.

All i was wondering if the increases in performance in 10.8.5 could be significant enough to allow either:

a) Playing in a higher resolution or

b) play in the same resolution but with higher settings.

Thanks again for your support.

Thats AWESOME!!! Thanks for the update!

I'm not sure if a and b will be a reality for 10.8.5, but we are hoping for those additions at or after Mavericks. That said...I would be curious to see if going into the config at 10.8.5 would grant you both. Just remember to set them back if you ever need to call support ;)
