hey bro im not the smartest, but i think if you have stock 3g s running 3.0, u can run purplera1n if you want to jailbreak. i didnt buy my iphone til there was a jailbreak for it. which was purplera1n at the time. unlocking im not into. but there are a ton of threads. hope this helped a little.

I would just use red snow from the dev-team. After you JB 3.0 download a custom ipsw for 3.1/3.1.2. and still keep your baseband needed to unlock. Upgrading to 3.1.2 then using balckra1n now would break any unlocking you need any time soon.

I tried at least 30~40 times for 3 hours, finally worked.
I registered here only to post to show you guys how i did it, and you can give it a try. When you click on blackra1n, your iphone should restart and IF YOUR PHONE HUNG IN BLACK SCREEN, dont do anything but exist blackra1n and restart black ra1n and click on make it rain. Repeat this simple process until you get the picture of the guy with iphones.
That's it! I tried that steps for 5 times and it worked.

well blackra1n ran but Im now stuck at slide for emergency screen after jailbreak and no valid sim to activate with
well, you got further than i did. my 3Gs with 3.1.2, ran the blackra1n and it just ends up getting stuck at geohot's image section and won't reboot. but the program blackra1n shows it's done and after reboot, all it done. go figure..
it says it's done before geohot's image even appears.....how can it say it's done when it's not even on screen showing anything lol
lol... go figure. i've even sent and email to geohot from his blog.. but haven't got a response. tried so many ways and so many times.. and still can't get pass the geohot image, but already blackra1n said it's done. when i tried a hard reset, it shows in emergency call only mode with my Tmo listed on the upper left hand corner with full bars. now that's funny... actually it isn't.. it's frustrating.
Installed blackra1n on my 3.1.2 16gb 3G (AT&T sim). Took about 2 minutes for everything. No hiccups. Now I'm off to install Cydia and then a tethering app 
I got my new 3GS four days ago, and Blackra1n worked great... until I had to reboot the device, after installing Winterboard.
It was then, when I realised that it was only a tethered jailbreak for my (I guess, latest bootrom) 3GS.
As much as I want to have SBSettings etc, If I had to reboot my 3GS, whilst away from the PC, I would've been in trouble, so I guess I have to wait until Geohot can hack the latest bootrom, for a bone-fide jailbreak.
Am I right to think if you reboot for any reason or battery goes flat you need to use a pc to get Blackra1n to work again?
i am on rogers, i thought things were fine till i tried using wifi, for some reason the JB+Unlock had completely disabled my wifi.
even though it was on it wouldnt find it, resetting network settings didnt work and neither did restarting the iphone (3GS 3.1.2)
I've JB my 3GS iPhone with Blackra1n on my MacBook Pro using Snow Leopard and haven't experienced a crash yet; *Crossing Fingers* nor have I had to restore for any reason....
