Thanks for the help, it hasn't asked me for it again. I might have guessed right. I'll try this next time.
And to keep in line with this thread.... Blackra1n worked for me the first try, Win 32 bit. It actually took longer to download and install 3.1.2 than it did to jailbrake.

I'm at my apartment sitting 7 feet away from my router that is working fine....quick update the App Store will not let me buy or download free or paid apps. When I click download/buy it clicks buy then refreshes and nothing happens. I tried to view my account and it wouldn't let me. I then tried to view my account on iTunes from my laptop and I got an error.
This is on top of my phone asking me for my voicemail password every other time I slide to unlock.....
Update: I did a hard reset and got WiFi back and to download an app :happy:

yeah i was getting both of those problems, so i unjailbroke my phone. But then i read onliine restarting should get wifi back. but now i cant et blackra1n to work...

I had a fit of a time getting this to work on my 3G 8GB iPhone. But after doing the YouTube video trick it worked like a charm on my second try. Having only jailbroken my iPod Touch in the past, and never my iPhone. I am really enjoying being jailbroken on my 3G. All I really want are themes, PDANet and 3G Unrestrictor(for my slingbox) and I am set! Pretty simple if you ask me, but I am sure the new dev tool is just as simple. But I have no noticeable issues, VVM works fine, signal is fine, push works fine. I am just totally amped to have PDANet and tethering, its basically the reason I did it. Oh and intelliscreen rocks, buggy for me at least right now. But like the idea of it.
whats the best way to do this, i would rather clear out my entire phone and start over so there wont be any problems, what is the best way to completly just start from fresh then jailbreak it with blackra1n
I finally got blackra1n to work and it couldn't be easier.
The Dev team jailbreak is by far a far more advanced process and results but in the end what it comes down to for me is I have windows machines, I don't unlock, and all I need is jailbreak.
I've noticed that too. But if you hit the X button and start retyping it should be okay.
Anyone know why this is happening?
I can imagine it's like purplera1n and is super easy...my question is how exactly do i do in order to get from JB 3.0 to JB 3.1.2? Do I just follow the steps in the latest release of backra1n for 3.1.2?
Ok, I spent all Sunday and Monday morning trying to run this JB on my Ipod touch 3G 64gb. Here is what I did that finally got it to work. A friend of mine had trouble with 3GS and it worked for him.
1. Open itunes, do a backup.
2. Restore device using itunes. If you need to upgrade to 3.1.2, do so.
3. After restore, itunes will ask you to either set up as new ipod or restore the backup. Do nothing.
4. In itunes, click on Controls, then Eject Ipod/Iphone. It will do so. Do not unplug your ipod/iphone.
5. Close itunes.
6. Run blackra1n.exe. What i did was uncheck run in xp mode in properties and then ran program as administrator.
7. click on Make It Rain
8. Lo and behold, i saw George's face and JB was successful.
I hope this will help those who are still having troubles. I ran this on my Vista 32bit.

I restored from a backup to factory settings, did the jailbreak again and had the same result.
I searched and found a thread with someone having the same problem. They said a restore and re-jailbreak worked.
anyone have this problem, please help?!

I realized I was restoring to a backup that was created while I was already jailbroken. I will try restoring to a backup before I jailbroke but still think this is a big issue. I read a post a while back that said Winterboard modifies something and is not compatible with the iPhone 3GS. Is this still true?
I'm trying to understand the cause of the problem so that I don't repeat it when I attempt to jailbreak again.

per geohot's twitter feeds, 8gb will not work. i believe if your serial starts with mc it will not work.
So I have the 3GS 3.1.2 which I jailbroke yesterday. Well I downloaded the following apps: Backgrounder, SBSSettings, BossPaper, Winterboard, MXTube, iRealQuickSMS, and Cydia.
My battery drained like crazy today. I usually have about 40-30% left when I get home at about 5pm, today I looked at the phone as I was pulling up and it said 12%. Anyone else have this experience? I'm thinking of restoring and sticking with stock iPhone.

I've found that turning the battery percentage on just invokes the placebo affect for me at least.
I'm constantly looking at how much battery I have left and I compare it to other times doing the same thing and it eventually drove me crazy so I just turned it off.

+1 to that!! Well I did this last night on my 2G itouch and it worked just fine. So tonight I am gonna bit the bullet and do my JB 3gs (3.0) and my wifes none JB 3gs (3.1)
Just real quick I should expect to lose unlock features if I do this correct? Also I read somewhere that you lose the chance to JB later on down the road if needed? Is that true?
If you upgrade to the official apple firmware you'll lose unlock features. if you have your ECID SHSH on file with cydia you can always downgrade to a firmware that is jailbreakable (i.e. 3.1)(my life is easier option)
