Neither Backgrounder nor SBSettings are working for me. They installed fine and Backgrounder shows up on the Home Screen but neither of them actually do anything.

All three. I used Cydia to install everything though.

I had the same problem - I managed to fix it, though. This is how I fixed it.

  1. Uninstalled itunes and Apple Mobile Devices programs.
  2. Reinstalled itunes.
  3. Restored iphone in DFU mode.
  4. Set up as a new phone.
  5. Blackra1ned.
  6. ONLY INSTALLED CYDIA
  7. (Installed spotify)
  8. (installed backgrounder)
  9. Enabled backgrounder for spotify
  10. CAME.

Ok guys here's one thing no one has managed to answer for me.

The jailbreak says that it's tethered does that mean if I install it on my 3gs I have to make sure the battery never dies otherwise I have to reinstall the jb or does that only apply to the touch?

The situation I have atm is I have a jb 3gs running on 3.0.1 and still have v8 of itunes.

I'm thinking of using aptbackup then upgrading to itunes 9 then downloading the 3.1.2 fw direct through itunes then use rain to jb then restore my cydia apps thru apptbackup.

Will this work/any issues?

theres a new thread going in other forums advising only to install each one at a time...some conflicts on apps..install Cydia 1st....get your apps then get Icy and Rock if you like...but 1 at a time good luck

The tethering only applies to the latest iPod Touch, yeah.

I'm getting a 3GS in the morning. Was waiting for the JB =)

Does anyone know the following:

I'm on Vista ultimate 32bit....I have installed SP3, but don't see it in the compatability settings when right clicking on blackra1n.

Can someone tell me a work around, or how to bring up SP3 in the combat settings.

PLease help!

Same here for me...

Here's what I did:

Attached my iPhone to iTunes cable on Windows (Vista). iPhone was updated to 3.1.2 before I connected it.

iTunes is version 9 is installed on the Vista laptop. iTunes was not running at the time of the blackra1n jailbreak.

Ran blackra1n. iPhone had the iTunes logo and white cable icon. Blackra1in got stuck on "running" (just hangs there).

Closed blackra1n. Removed cable from iPhone. Held home and power buttons on the iPhone at the same time until device turned off. Pressed power to turn device on again. Attached iPhone to cable, ran blackra1n, and repeated these steps about five (5) times until, instead of hanging on "running" with the iTunes logo and cable on the screen of the iPhone, I got the blackra1n picture on the iPhone screen. Then just followed instructions and it worked.

I never at any point in this process did a "restore."

Even though I started this process with iTunes closed it does load at some point in the process but it isn't an issue. Just follow the blackra1n instructions.

I did not have to Restore as new or Restore from backup...didn't have to reload any apps, did a restore from back up for my cydia apps...very smooth.

Cheers for that mate I was begining to think how stupid it would be if I had to rejailbreak everytime I turned my phone off.

It should still work without the settings I think...you could also try looking through properties.

Well screw it. I was happily sitting on 3.0.1 with a jailbreak and all was good in the world.

Thought this guys actual app would do the trick and allow me to be on the newest update and jailbroken but clearly his app isn't ready for primetime. And no trick anyone is posting is doing anything.

I will wait till the iPhone dev team releases a new version of redsn0w or something at least they will ensure it works 100% before releasing software to everyone.

For now I sit on 3.1.2 with NO jailbreak and I guess I will just have to wait. I have had to end up restoring my phone who knows how many times today cause no matter what when blackra1n makes my iphone restart I get stuck on the itunes logo with the white usb cable. No trick gets me around that.

And word to Geohot. Releasing an application then practically falling off the face of the earth isn't good for potential users of your software.

All I can say is try it on another PC...I did it on IPT1g, 3G and 3GS...ran Blackra1n several times on PC and got it to run...i did my 3GS on another machine and was successful the very 1st time....I went from 3.0.1 JB to fully 3.1.2 JB quite easily.

Sorry for off-topic, but I have no idea whether or not to install Rock and Icy?

CAn't do any harm just having them anyway can it?

I have Cydia and Rock...Cydia is the staple, but Rock has a nice graphical interface
and you can backup/restore all cydia apps.

would not let this touch my 3GS

dev team remains the stable trusted source and
it has always been worthwhile waiting for them

I like The DEV Team too...but this was so easy and I have not had a problem...I am still testing to make sure everything works but so far all the apps I use most are working flawlessly...Slingbox/3gUnrestrictor/Skype/Catagories...i have even loaded a couple of 3.1 only Apps...
I too did not want to upgrade for fear that my favs would not work...I tested on my 3G, then bit the bullet and did it on my 3GS...Wait if you must, but GEO came through...Props to DevTeam and Geo..

Hummm.. so he puts out a not quite ready for prime time tool and it's our fault if we take his recommendation and try to use it.

Not hardly.

And I am not hating on GeoHot, he's got major talent and major smarts...

But he does have a track record of rushing these things out.

Not sure If he rushed it or not....it does work...I would have held out but I tested
it on my IPT1g and my 3G..

No GeoHot was one of the DevTeam, but I think it was a personality thing that lead to him going his own way.

That said, GeoHot is brilliant and I'm sure his talents had nothing to do with the split.

I think his stuff is awesome, but he rushes it out, unlike the DevTeam which takes more time to field test stuff.

However, I'm sure there are hundreds, maybe thousands of newly jailbroken iPhone/iPod owners who are thankful he rushed it out so quickly.

And there seem to be more than a few others who are frustrated that he released it so quickly.

I say Don't hate the Playa, hate the Game....

exactly.

whether Geo rushed or others are slow, they are providing us the tools Jobs doesn't want us to have.

I finally got blackra1n to work on my 3G using my back up laptop by disabling the bonjour service, win7. Once the 3G is all set up I will attempt jb the 3gs.

Cydia and Rock...Cydia is the staple, but Rock has a nice graphical interface
and you can backup/restore all cydia apps.

I have to agree with the other's I quoted here:

1. I also discovered the same problem mentioned above. After a successful jailbreak with Blackra1n...I installed BOTH Cydia and Rock Your Phone at the same time.

2. I then uploaded my backup that I had stored on RYP and the problems started that have been posted all over this thread. Categories, SBsettings, and Winterboard did not work or were buggy as heck.

3. Tried to uninstall the buggy apps and reload but it did not help/work.

4. Restored with a fresh jailbreak and ONLY installed Cydia.

5. Loaded all my apps FRESH that were Cydia based and they WORK PERFECT. Did NOT use the back up this time.

6. Then installed RYP THROUGH CYDIA and installed my Theme and PDANet from RYP. All worked flawlessly.

A little note: Like a dummy, I tested PDANet while my laptop was connected wirelessly to my router...PDANet WIPED out my router and I had to set it up as new. Do NOT RUN PDANet while you are connected to another router...it will wipe out the settins.

Hope this helps some of you having SB and other App problems.

okay So I'm on Vista 32bit....and it appears I only have SP2 installed (as I've read there isn't even a SP3 for Vista)....

Any advice on how to get this thing working....I'm on my 43 restore! Yikes!

Ok guys here's one thing no one has managed to answer for me.

tethered jailbreak just means if the battery dies or you had to reboot the phone you would need blackra1n to boot the phone backup to normal jailbroken state no restoring or starting from scratch each time

Further to the problems with installing cydia and rock and icy at the same time, I found you can just unistall rock/icy with cydia - then reinstall cydia using blackrain (as long as you didn't delete it from your device) and you can reinstall winterboard, SBSetting etc and they all work.

Beats restoring and going through the JB again.

quick question.
Do i need to have itunes installed on the comp that i JB on?
cause its just sitting on "entering recovery"...

Think this might work?

So I was reading somewhere that going into DFU mode for the blackra1n jailbreak would work? Anyone else did this exactly and if so what exact steps did you take?

Also I have windows 7 beta (about to be removed when I upgrade the computer fully to windows 7 next weeK) on another hard drive. Should I boot into that and try this? Also would you suggest that I install iTunes or will this work without the need of iTunes? (I assume not because itunes will install the appropriate drivers but figured I should cover all my bases.)
