I dont get this...don't people READ before they post??? The first 3-5 pages give links to instructions and what is required yet posters are STILL asking if iTunes is needed.

How the HECK are you going to follow the first instruction which is UPGRADE your iPhone to 3.1.2 without iTunes???

Why would you want to even attempt to do anything with the iPhone without iTunes when it is required for syncing and establishing your account???

What does it cost you to install iTunes on a PC or Mac???

READ THE POSTs and the LINKS for instructions or dont and figure it out yourselves!:eek::eek:

Hey before you start getting on people's cases Im someone who spent all day and over 30 trys using Vista (where I have iTunes installed) trying to get this to jailbreak I have a 3G not a 3Gs.

Excuse me for asking if it was indeed needed for doing the jailbreak procudre only (of course I would be using iTunes to sync) I wanted to know if it was really needed just for the jailbreak itself.

After trying 30 times yesterday and 20 times where the iTunes recovery was forced and required a full restore. Im desprate to try anything that will indeed prove to work for me.

So before you start with jerk comments realize people are desperate to jailbreak and honestly are willing to do whatever is needed provided it actually jailbreaks.

In my case, my iMac is my primary iTunes computer. Theoretically, I could have upgraded to 3.1.2 on my iMac, then gone to my Win7 laptop to run blackra1n. Others might have to 'borrow' a Windows PC because all they have is a Mac and they don't want to install iTunes on a borrowed Windows PC.There are a couple valid reasons why people could ask if iTunes is needed.

In my situation, I did everything on my Win7 laptop, i.e., upgraded from 3.01 to 3.1.2 and ran blackra1n.

My understanding is you will lose tethering capability if you upgrade to 3.1 firmware or greater.

Is this correct?

No sir. I have 3.1.2 installed in a 3GS jailbroken yesterday with Blackra1n and I'm using PDANet as always. Working great so far in Wifi and USB mode, although I needed to install latest PDANet Desktop version 1.54 because it was giving me an error, but wifi and Ad-Hoc connection worked as usual.

Also MyWi was not supposed to work on 3.1, but it works on my 3.1.2 jb...

Voicemail

is anyone having issues with accessing the visual voicemail. i do not want to restore and re-jailbreak again. becoming annoying. so anyone who had a problem with their visual voicemail fixed it please let me know.

my problem is it is unable to connect to my voicemail thus i cant check messages. i dial #1 from my phone and i can check them that way. lil help here.

There's already videos on YouTube on how to JB using blackra1n. That way you know if everything went well and your not waiting around for 25+ min for it to work.

Here's what I did, once.

Before
  • iPhone 3G, 3.01, jailbroken
  • Windows7 Ultimate (32 bit), blackra1n which I installed on the Desktop, right clicked said run as XP-SP3

Procedure
  1. Connected iPhone to laptop
  2. Started iTunes manually
  3. Right clicked the iPhone, Backed up the phone
  4. Updated to 3.1.2
  5. Stopped iTunes
  6. Started blackra1n
  7. It finished.

On iPhone
  1. Started blackra1n
  2. Installed Cydia
  3. Installed all my Cydia apps except MyWi, which doesn't work.

I did not have to restore my iPhone, all the App Store apps were there after I updated to 3.1.2.

This worked perfect for me and my 3GS. It was on 3.01 JB'd w/redsnow. I only installed Cydia, then reloaded JB apps one at a time. Not a single issue so far. BTW, I did this on XP sp3.

Has anyone had any luck running this in a windows VM in Parallels on the mac, and then being able to sync and restore from backup on your mac with out it wanting to wipe out the phone and install again? I just don't want to do the upgrade and jailbreak in windows only to have the mac itunes tell me it needs to reinstall again and I'm left with out the jailbreak.

Anyone notice the battery draining fast after Blackra1n? Mine would drop down to 95% in one hour when I didn't even touch the phone. I restored back to a fresh 3.1.2 and now I'm still at 100% after one hour. I don't need a jailbreak that bad.

Alright guys I need some help here. I have a black iPhone 3G 8gb. No matter what I do I get the connect to iTunes screen and it stays on that instead of switching over to a picture of geohot. I am running Windows XP and I have already restored my phone as new to 3.1.2. Any ideas?

I have also tried running it directly from the C: drive and the desktop.

Also tried this https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/801657/

Why...

How come every time I slide to unlock, my phone asks me for my voicemail password?? Any advice...I'm not even sure if I'm putting the right password in. Can I call Att and get my password?

those of you still having troubles using blackra1n try this:

0. have device unplugged and all itunes related processes closed except for apple mobile device. (i.e. close itunes, ituneshelper, ipodhelper/ipodmanager idfk which it is, and mdnsresponder.)
1. open blackra1n.exe
2. plug in iphone/ipod touch/dutch w/e
3. make it rain

let me know if that works for you guys, it worked for me last night.

edit: i forgot to add that i'm on windows 7 and i didnt even have to use any compatibility mode crap

Also tried ending all the processes that have worked for other people.

^^^^ THIS

This is your imagination, or it must have been something that had nothing to do with BlackRa1n (example, running backgrounder with a bunch of things going on in the background, the phone not having good reception during the time it was "off" and it was constantly searching)

No need to scare people away from Jailbreaking. Plug in your phone, hit make it rain, unplug, and be done with it. Simple.

Wrong, not my imagination. I have since restored to a fresh 3.1.2 and my battery has been fine all day. It's now at 80% after 12 hours and 2 hours 37 minutes usage.

Only thing I had installed from Cydia was iBlacklist. No backgrounder, only iBlacklist.

I did the exact thing excep I just updated and when I did that it backed up I was running iTunes 8.2 I think. No problems what so ever.

press and hold down 1 on your keypad...follow the phone prompt..you can access your password or get a new one SMS to you....good luck.

I just jailbroke my 8G 3G last Friday. Since i spend some time with the jailbreak, what does moving up to 3.1 firmware do for me ?
I could see the benefit when Jailbreaking Iphone 3GS's on 3.1, but is there any benefit in upgrading from JB 3.0 to JB 3.1 ?
Thanks,
MemphisDAVe

Have you gotten the carrier update that gives you MMS? Other than that I can think of no reason you would need to update.

Considering that I was jailbroken once and wore 70% of my battery one night at a concert and the next night I was virgin and only used 50% of my battery says something...

Yes! I had it for weeks before the rollout. I noticed in 3.0, i had to drop the carrier file back on my phone to enable MMS.

Thanks for clearing that up. I couldn't think of a reason if i'm already Jailbroken in 3.0 and I have the MMS carrier file.

I can't wait to try this out on my friends 3GS.

Cheers
