There are custom 3.1.2 ipsw files out there now. I upgraded a 3GS and 3G just a few ago w/out using blackrain and they are working great with Cydia and SSH installed..

Hey guys I have a question regarding the PDAnet app and I apologize if this is obvious to some, but I'm a noob to jailbreaking...

I read an article on the cultofmac site talking about the 10 apps to convince you to jailbreak... pdanet was one of the apps but it said: "tethering was nixed with 3.1.2 but you can use PDANet to tether to your mac over wifi."

Does this mean that using PDANet I can not tether to a Windows pc using USB??

I've never jailbroken but I'd really love to, especially if I would be able to tether.

Thanks.

A different way to get the jailbreak to work.

Plug the phone in and run blackra1n. When it doesn't work and you are stuck in recovery mode manually reset the phone by holding down the power and home buttons. While the phone is still off close blackra1n then open it again and start it. All this must happen before the phone is able to restart. Blackra1n will wait on the phone to reboot and then jailbreak it. This is the only thing that worked for me.

one thing i noticed with blackra1n is it changes the settings menu around.

it gets rind of the usage menu completely (or atleast i can't find it)

with black rain you can almost comletely customize your status bar changing the Carrier name even putting fake time in the status bar
there are many features with blackra1n they are all nice to have and it certainly gives you more control, but to (supposedly) get rid of the usage menu i think was a little wierd?

YouTube is your friend

Try looking in YouTube for videos that say "How to fix blackra1n jailbreak problems". It worked for me. I was always with a blank screen until I jailbroke it. cheers :)

Do you need to add all your music and whatnot after the JB, thinking of doing it but if you need to add music again I will wait until this weekend, because I have all my music in ALAC on my mac and need to convert for the iPhone (16 gig)

I just tried to JB with this app, the app froze I was finally able to restart my phone. What did I do wrong? I though I had lost my phone :( Did it on Snow Leopard, iPhone running 3.1.2 never jailbroken.

3.1.2

3GS success
3.0 to 3.1.2

I hit restore, allowed it to update the phones firmware through itunes, then clicked set up as a new phone, itunes synced my stuff back (music contacts ect)

after that i closed itunes, hit ctrl + del to kill any apple process running in the background. First one that comes to mind was itunes helper, and i ended a few other apple processes.

with all that stuff closed and the phone still plugged in, i launched blackra1n, it ran, waited a minute or so for the reboot, phone came back up, was jailbroken. installed cydia, uninstalled blackra1n app.

well done geohot, easy...

my honest feelings about 3.1.2 > meh...

Sucessful at Last

I tried Blackra1n 20 times on my PC. but it always hangs on boot screen.
Then I tried it once on my Mac and it works it only takes some seconds and my Iphone 3G was jailbroken. :D

:apple: I would suggest all of you to try Blackra1n on Mac. :apple:

Worked for me after 5 days

Ran blackra1n. iPhone had the iTunes logo and white cable icon. Blackra1in got stuck on "running" (just hangs there).

Closed blackra1n. Removed cable from iPhone. Held home and power buttons on the iPhone at the same time until device turned off. Pressed power to turn device on again. Attached iPhone to cable, ran blackra1n, and repeated these steps about five (5) times until, instead of hanging on "running" with the iTunes logo and cable on the screen of the iPhone, I got the blackra1n picture on the iPhone screen. Then just followed instructions and it worked.

Having Blackra1n on my C: drive with it unblocked, run as administrator, iTunes not on auto sync and following the instructions above worked for me after 4-5 days trying every other trick I have read on a dozen other forums.

helP?

can somebody help me?????
i plugged in my ipod touch 2g, and then ran black rain
i clicked make it ra1n, and now my ipod is stuck on the connect to itunes-USB screen. sometihing then comes up telling me that there is new found hardwhere, and tells me to install the apple recovery thing.
my computer says it can't find the hardware to install it,
i've turned it off by holding the power and home buttons, and back on numerous times... still stuck on that screen

those of you still having troubles using blackra1n try this:

0. have device unplugged and all itunes related processes closed except for apple mobile device. (i.e. close itunes, ituneshelper, ipodhelper/ipodmanager idfk which it is, and mdnsresponder.)
1. open blackra1n.exe
2. plug in iphone/ipod touch/dutch w/e
3. make it rain

let me know if that works for you guys, it worked for me last night.

edit: i forgot to add that i'm on windows 7 and i didnt even have to use any compatibility mode crap

it didn't work
my screen still has the itunes logo, with the USB cord:(

Ok ppl, I have an iPhone3G and I can confirm blackrain DOES WORK. And I can also confirm that the problems users are having, I also encountered them.

I think that this jailbreak is the simplest, but very strange and I'll tell you why; it's because you have to do the process a couple times before it works.

Here's what I did.

1. I first downloaded the latest iTunes and upgraded to 3.1.2 firmware for iPhone 3G.

2. I downloaded blackrain.

3. Restarted computer.

4. Plugged in iPhone and began running blackrain.

5. No logo showed, iPhone went into recovery.

6. I then went in to DFU mode (hold Power and Home for 5 secs) iPhone shut off.

7. Turned it back on and it was fine (could sync into iTunes).

8. Ran blackrain again.

9. No logo showed, iPhone went into recovery.

10. Repeated steps 6-7

11. Unplugged and replugged iPhone and did step 8 and finally showed that hideous logo.

11. Waited for reboot.

12. Installed Cydia.

Well, that was MY experience with this jailbreak. It took me 3 times to get this to work. I wrote this down in hopes that this will help any of you who is stuck.

Good luck.

This worked for me

Should I install all of the options or just one?
Cydia
Icy
Rock

i use cydia and rock rock is quick and the install system allows things to be installed while still searching for more apps and what not.

I am still new to all of this lingo...

I've noticed a lot of options in the Cydia and Rock...and they can be uninstalled.
Should I know what to keep and what not to?

Blackra1n RC2 has just been released.

Blackra1n RC2 has just been released.
It worked like a charm first time on my 3G, after the first version simply not working, after doing everything to try and make it work, previously.

No need to use, if already jailbroken.

What I have now - iPhone 3GS 16GB with factory stock 3.0 firmware (no updates) and AT&T Carrier file 6.0 that I downloaded from a link I found here somewhere. Everything works great including Tethering.

In the future I would still like to be able to "Unlock" my phone and was wondering what would be the best way to go. Keep in mind the only thing I know about "Jailbreaking" is what little I've read about here.

Can I just run Blackra1n the way my iPhone is right now or do I have to update to firmware 3.12? I've downloaded a couple of "Jailbroken" .ipsw files with the 500MB partition and "Push Notification" enabled (not sure why you wouldn't want it but there were two different versions of the .ipsw) but not sure which way would be best because I really don't understand well enough how all this ties together.

I still want to be able to purchase apps through the iTunes store as well as install some "try before I buy" *.ipa files through iTunes if possible. Before anyone passes judgment on me for the previous statement, I really do purchase all the apps I intend to keep, but not every app has a free or lite version to try before you buy.

Thanks in advance for any help or advice...
