I also have this issue on my Macbook pro 15" 2019 model.
Still under Apple Care, will make an appointment with Apple Support later.

I'm not sure it is somehow related to clamshell as I supposed to think some time ago...Is this issue happening in M1 based MacBooks and when mainly using them in clamshell mode?
It would be interested to hear from MBP 14 M1 Pro and also from MBA M1 owners who have been using their MacBooks in clamshell mode mostly. I'm considering replace my Mac Mini M1 with MBP 14" Pro so I would be using it 99% of the time in clamshell mode and plugged in to charger using my 32" 4K monitor as display only. I currently have also MBA M1 I use rarely, so I was thinking about getting rid of my both Mini and MBA and use this single MBP for all my use where I rarely need a laptop really. I'm just not sure this is really wise thing to do.
Also how common is battery swelling in these when constantly plugged in?
Heat sounds like the most plausible reason for this but I guess battery swelling could have caused pressure against the display which might result something like this too.I'm not sure it is somehow related to clamshell as I supposed to think some time ago...
My personal opinion is that the main reason for battery swelling and spots appearing is chassis temperature.
I had 2 MBPs (one in clamshell mode always, the second always standalone) - both have bluish spots and batteries swollen in 2-3 years.
I have my current MBP (mostly in clamshell) for 3 years already. But from the day one I installed MacsFanControl and set more aggressive cooling policy. And no problems so far.
Have you been using clamshell mode much with it?2016 13" here. No problem. Well, at least for this issue- I've already had my screen and keyboard replaced for flexgate and butterflygate.
Now my camera has stopped working again, looks like flexgate is back and the free repair program is no longer around.
So all good, lol.
