At this point I thought that all I’d need to do is rerun replacebootLoader so that the “/OS X Install Data/boot.efi” would be updated but the file does not seem to be present.

The bad news… I’m not sure what to do next.
The good news… the issues that I had with the install complaining about El Capital already being installed on the host seems to have gone now that I’ve used boot.efi 3.1 on the install media.

Depending on the output I posted... be careful what you're looking at. I'll happily repost a built fusion drive.
You could cheat... and build a fusion drive out of 2 x HDD's - the system will never know - at least I don't think it will.

- David

So wait, this isn't a real, purchased from Apple with the original system Fusion Drive™ but rather a frankendrive configured to act like a fusion drive via coreStorage? Can I get some confirmation that this setup appears identical to the actual Fusion Drives that less knowledgeable people might have in their, I would guess, non-Mac Pro's?

Come to think of it, if someone does have a Fusion Drive™ from Apple, then I think that guarantees that their system is already El Capitan compatible. Real Fusion Drives are only available at the time of system purchase correct?

Regardless, if you are competent enough to set up a DIY Fusion Drive manually, replicating my script manually should be trivial. Obviously I can't cover every contingency, but if it's possible that someone not very familiar with the command line could actually have an El Capitan non-compatible system that also has a real Fusion Drive, I can see about adding support.

Damn you guys have obviously never heard of a code box it makes it much easier to read long posts.

Code:
sudo ./replaceBootloader "Install OS X El Capitan"

Using volume 'Install OS X El Capitan':

An example of your output I snipped in such a box above all that is needed when posting is to put a [ code ] long text output [ / code] (added spaces so it shows up here in this post) around the text and the forum software does the rest for you.[/QUOTE]

Close, what you actually need to do is rerun replacebootLoader to replace boot.efi on the Installer Media. Stage 1 of the installation sneakily refreshes the bootability of the Installer source at the very end of Stage 1, intending to boot off of it right after Stage 1 completes.

Probably not the place here to discuss this, so I'll make it quick.

If you have a MacPro, a SSD and a HDD (or 2 drives for that matter on any Mac) you can create a fusion drive.
There are various articles on the net that tell you how to do this, here is one.
http://www.techrepublic.com/article/pro-tip-how-to-create-and-disable-a-fusion-drive/

In short:
Code:
diskutil coreStorage create LOGICAL_VOL_GROUP_NAME DRIVE_1 DRIVE_2
diskutil coreStorage createVolume lvgUUID type name size

And you can do 'diskutil cs list'

My fusion drive isn't built at the moment while I test on individual drives. I can not show you the output of 'diskutil cs list' - I will when I've finished this testing. I have seen the output from this command from a factory build Mac mini with a fusion drive and it was identical to what I had.

Agreed.

Thanks for the confirmation. I think it still stands though that this comes under the heading of non-standard/advanced setup as I don't think there should be anybody with a non-supported Mac AND an official Fusion Drive™.

@everyone:

I am getting reports from people with memory issue with El Capitan installed. Even with the Apple version of boot.efi on supported hardware. The issue is that Activity Monitor -> Memory -> Physical Memory reports only half of what is actually installed. Not always, but they do run into troubles when it does. A reboot did fix it, but there is no guarantee that it keeps working.

Please verify this if you run into weird kernel panics!

@clawfinger,

Fusion drives should not be a problem, but you probably need to replace the boot.efi on both drives. And if it isn't there already, then put it there.

Another issue is that the Installer detection in boot.efi may fail on Fusion drives!

That's PRECISELY what I was referring to when I mentioned the possible problem of folder coherency on Fusion drives.

Sorry Peter. Was way too much in a hurry so I must have missed it. Anyway.

For Apple RAID, CoreStorage and Fusion Drive support clawfinger should also check:

Fixed. Appreciate the tip. Thanks.

Your welcome figured you did not know about it as you were not using it, you can do the same with quoting within a post if you want to break it up to reply to points at a time. You just replace the code in my example above with quote if you want to see further examples of what can be done search on BBCode examples. A lot of forums support this idea even if they do not have the buttons for it like here. I never use the buttons anyways I find it easier to just keep typing entering the code(s) needed as I do so.

BootLoader v3.1

Recreate install Media on MacBookPro - latest El Capitan download from the App Store.
sudo /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ El\ Capitan.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/Untitled --applicationpath /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ El\ Capitan.app --nointeraction
Erasing Disk: 0%... 10%... 20%... 30%...100%...
Copying installer files to disk...
Copy complete.
Making disk bootable...
Copying boot files...
Copy complete.
Done.

Replace boot.efi with version 3.1

Code:
cp boot.efi /Volumes/Install\ OS\ X\ El\ Capitan/.IABootFiles/.
cp boot.efi /Volumes/Install\ OS\ X\ El\ Capitan/usr/standalone/i386/.
cp boot.efi /Volumes/Install\ OS\ X\ El\ Capitan/System/Library/CoreServices/.

Confirmation.
xnotifications-trafficcamnz:bootloader dgwilson$ ls -la /Volumes/Install\ OS\ X\ El\ Capitan/.IABootFiles/bo*
-rw-r--r-- 3 dgwilson staff 316416 6 Nov 09:28 /Volumes/Install OS X El Capitan/.IABootFiles/boot.efi

-rw-r--r-- 3 dgwilson staff 316416 6 Nov 09:28 /Volumes/Install OS X El Capitan/System/Library/CoreServices/boot.efi

Disconnect external HDD from MacBookPro
Mount external HDD in MacPro1,1
Reboot - hold down option key on boot
Install OS X El Capitan
Installer reboots at completion

Mac restarts to another drive with El Capitan on it.

At this point given that the boot volume remains set to the installer disk… and that it didn’t boot… I took a closer look.

pwd
/Volumes/Install OS X El Capitan
Davids-Mac-Pro:Install OS X El Capitan dgwilson$ ls -la .IABootFiles/bo*
-rw-r--r-- 1 dgwilson staff 604728 22 Sep 17:15 .IABootFiles/boot.efi

The boot.efi has been replaced on the install volume. So I replaced it and rebooted.
Code:
Davids-Mac-Pro:Install OS X El Capitan dgwilson$ cp System/Library/CoreServices/boot.efi .IABootFiles/.
Davids-Mac-Pro:Install OS X El Capitan dgwilson$ ls -la .IABootFiles/bo*
-rw-r--r-- 1 dgwilson staff 316416 6 Nov 10:12 .IABootFiles/boot.efi

Reboot.
Install automatically continuing to target volume.

… hmmm left he room, came back to find the Mac had rebooted… back into install of OS X.
I selected the target drive again and begun the install.

OS X could not be installed on your computer - an error occurred while extracting files from the package “Essentials.pkg”.

So I’m going to repeat the whole process and this time use a USB key instead of an external HDD.

For Apple RAID, CoreStorage and Fusion Drive support clawfinger should also check:

/com.apple.boot.P/...
/com.apple.boot.R/...
/com.apple.boot.S/...

On it.

There have been several reports of Installation Media (regardless of whether USB,HDD,SSD based) somehow getting corrupted after even a single use, perhaps due to all the disk images that get mounted not getting properly unmounted etc. My guess would be that this is the source of this issue and I would keep it in mind during future installation attempts.

Count me in as yet another who has had at least three theoretically perfectly patched (i.e. all three Pike's boot.efi files in place, -rw-r-r- (no@) root wheel) installers fail @ ~9 min remaining of 17 while extracting essentials.Apple might have some kind of issue. Diskutil, however, does not report any errors anywhere.

Trying the install again off USB key has not succeeded. Similar complaints about damaged packages.
So I thought I'd try of an external hard drive connected over firewire 800. And this time I've run createinstallmedia on the MacPro itself. After replacing the 3 x boot.efi files - the drive is not detected as a startup volume. And still not after a reboot.

I strongly suggest that you create a "legacy" installer. They can't be created with one single instruction or in one step, but they don't get corrupted, ever. And they don't ruin your hardware.

Please forgive a non-developer (although I'm studying...) in the developer thread, but I might be throwing some useful information into the mix (or not...). I very carefully followed spliffingate's instructions and created 2 bootable legacy installers - once on the supported iMac in ElCap to a firewire drive and again on my MacPro running Yosemite 10.10.5. to an 8G internal partition. In both cases, the install failed when reading the Essentials.pkg. Install logs do show some interesting errors prior to the crash, if someone wants to compare, I have several saved logs.

I've tested every thing that I can from power supply to hard drives to ram, everything checks out when I'm in Lion or Yosemite. The only way I've been able to boot into El Capitan is with a system that was installed/created on my supported iMac with Pike's boot.efi files. Sooner or later, I get kernel panics and hard crashes/reboots, and the console is logging hundreds of errors every second.

My latest wild theory - supported by 2 different posters on the behemoth MacPro 1,1/2,1 El Capitan thread - is that the problem lies with the OEM 512MB DIMMs. Mine is not "bad" after 8+ hrs of running memtest, I got 0 errors, but it is different and less "modern" than the 1/2/4GB modules that were standard/OEM/minimum. Here's a slightly more qualified opinion than a random poster on the main ElCap thread:

Our 1GB, 2GB, and 4GB modules are dual rank (a single rank module would be significantly more expensive), and always have been. You can populate your machine with any paired combination of our 512mb, 1GB, 2GB, or 4GB modules without any problems. The 512mb modules are single rank modules.

That's a RamJet tech, speaking about single rank vs. dual rank modules, excerpted from this thread on Apple's support site.

I'm definitely grasping at straws, but I'm going to pull the present, tested OK, but pre-Mavericks/Yosemite/EC generation, single rank 512MB modules and replace them with these 4x2GB matched dual rank modules ($19 shipped!) and start all over. I'll post results here (unless the smart kids kids tell me to get out of this thread) when I test it out.

Now, Mr. Wilson, if you'd like to play along, I notice you're running with legacy 512MB modules in Riser B, slots 3 & 4 (they should actually be upstairs on A:3,4 if your MacPro is a true 1,1 - check the inside of the door)... Pull those dusty puppies out of there and see if you get different results. I'm anxious to hear. You'll be able to support or invalidate my theory.

If any of the smart kids have any thoughts or want to tell me why this is a stupid theory, I'd love to be educated.

Cheers ;)

(P.S. - I hope no one is insulted or slighted by the term "smart kids". It is not intended to be anything but sincerely complimentary)

Thanks Peter. I'm building legacy now.
Can you confirm for me please:

"11. Finally, replace the bootbase.efi file located in System/Library/CoreServices with Pike’s bootbase.efi that you previously downloaded as indicated earlier."

I can use a copy of boot.efi renamed to bootbase.efi for this purpose?

I'll butt in and say, "Yes" just rename Pike's boot.efi - and ask you to pull your legacy 512 ram out when you try the install. See my post above. And I hope it makes a difference for you/us!

When I wrote the instruction you quoted, technical circumstances were different from what later developments allowed. In other words, now there isn't a separate bootbase.efi by Pike anymore. As a result, and taking for granted that the presence of bootbase.efi is still necessary (I'm not sure it is), simply copy Pike's boot.efi and rename it as bootbase.efi and then copy boot.efi again (this would be for /S/L/CS/ of the installer).

Have built the legacy installer.
Have attempted install - fails at the same place with the essentials.pkg error.

Removed the 2 x 512 memory modules - taking machine down to 4GB
Install fails again (using legacy installer). Same issue with essentials.pkg
- I did this a number of times as I'd left the room and came back to the machine having booted into the installer again. The target install disk only had the following:

Code:
/Volumes/ElCapInstTest/
Mac-Pro:ElCapInstTest dgwilson$ ls -la
total 8
drwxrwxr-x 10 root wheel 408 7 Nov 13:44 .

Being how as I have 2 x MacPro1,1 machines (the second one don't have a high enough spec'd video card at the moment). I decided to take the memory boards from that machine and swap them.

Install fails again (using legacy installer). Same issue with essentials.pkg

Crash log below - was displayed after I booted into a good 10.11 environment.

iMattux - thank you for the RAM suggestion and the link to Amazon.

In both cases, the install failed when reading the Essentials.pkg. Install logs do show some interesting errors prior to the crash, if someone wants to compare, I have several saved logs.

Aye; it would be of interest.

I just don't understand, as I can create and install these things at-will (always have)....

Stick 'em on a server, share over in the EL Cap thread, email them to me @gmail.com, or whatever . . . once you get all the installer stuff sorted, we can work on boot.efi advancement/development, here (if you so choose).

I'm definitely grasping at straws, but I'm going to pull the present, tested OK, but pre-Mavericks/Yosemite/EC generation, single rank 512MB modules and replace them with these 4x2GB matched dual rank modules ($19 shipped!) and start all over. I'll post results here...

Replacing RAM piece-meal is extremely frustrating: I started with two 512MB sticks in 2006, and frankenschtein'ed through various types and styles over the years (some factory-replacement failures, many red LEDs on the risers, and $ tossed), and have finally achieved Memory Nirvana with these four matching 4GiB pairs (32GiB, total).

One finds one's Sweet Spot, I believe, in matching one's Pairs, and being satisfied with such :)

This MacPro has been--and (if the future is based upon the past) will continue to be--so very, very stable, that it's difficult for me to imagine it not being so.

btw, you might notice that I'm running my "1,1" with upgraded CPU and 2,1 firmware, so this is another angle, for comparison....
